"Guidance from Ages Past" is a Main Quest in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]

Overview

When Link interacts with the Zonai Relic on Dragonhead Island, he hears the voice of Mineru, who tells him to take it and follow the beam of light it emits.[2] By doing so, he will complete the "Secret of the Ring Ruins" Main Quest and start "Guidance from Ages Past".[note 1][note 2]

In Tobio's Hollow, Link is lead toward a large owl statue with a pedestal in front of it. When he brings the Zonai Relic to the pedestal, the owl statue will raise, revealing the entrance to the Tobio's Hollow Chasm. The Zonai Relic then shoots another beam of light toward the pedestal at its center. Placing the Zonai Relic on the pedestal causes the surrounding platform to descend into the Depths. As they move, Mineru speaks to Link again, urging him to meet with her as soon as possible.[4]

The platform lands in front of the Construct Factory, and the Zonai Relic shoots a final beam of light toward the mold at its entrance. Using Ultrahand, he can place the Relic into the head slot. When he does so, Mineru formally introduces herself to him as the Sage of Spirit.[5] She reveals that she has lost her original body and is therefore unable to speak with him in person.[6] In order to create a new body for herself, she asks Link to retrieve parts from the Left-Arm Depot, the Left-Leg Depot, the Right-Arm Depot, and the Right-Leg Depot.[7]

As Link places the parts into the mold, Mineru will count how many are left.[8][9][10] After Link assembles Mineru's Construct, it will activate itself and emerge from the mold. Mineru thanks Link, revealing that they now must recover her Secret Stone.[11] Opening the Map, Mineru points Link towards its location and asks him to accompany her.[12] Due to the danger of their journey, she tells Link to use a nearby platform to explore the uses of the Construct.[13] She beckons Link to hurry.[14]

When they reach the Spirit Temple, Mineru's Construct is unable to pass crumbled stairs.[15] By Fusing a Rocket from the nearby Supply Site to the Construct, Link is able to bring it to the Temple's entrance. When they approach the statue at its center, Mineru's Construct fires a beam at it, which activates the nearby Travel Point and causes the platform they are standing on to descend.

The Secret Stone of Spirit can be seen across a stretch of Gloom, requiring Link to ride Mineru's Construct in order to reach it it. However, they are stopped by Electric fences rising from the ground, and the Seized Construct appears. Mineru recognizes it as her own creation, but she is able to tell it is being controlled.[16] Since it is being controlled by Demon King Ganondorf, Mineru declares that they must defeat the Construct.[17]

Once the Seized Construct has been defeated, the Gloom inside the Spirit Temple will dissipate and the fences will drop. A Heart Container will also appear for Link. As Link examines the Secret Stone of Spirit, his Purah Pad will suddenly begin to glow. Mineru's Spirit emerges from the Pad and enters the Secret Stone, which shrinks and embeds itself into her Construct. A purple light then engulfs Link.

Mineru's introduction

When the light fades, Link can see Mineru standing in front of him. Once again, she introduces herself to him, this time revealing that she is a Zonai.[18] She expresses her happiness to finally meet Link, thanking him for helping recover her Secret Stone.[19] Mineru reveals that she originally planned to contact him when he first acquired the Purah Pad and take over the Seized Construct, but she did not realize they would have to fight it instead.[20] Expressing her gratitude, she asks Link to give her his hand.[21] Once he does so, she makes the Vow of Mineru, Sage of Spirit, which engraves itself on the middle finger of his Right Arm.[22] She claims that this has formed a bond between her and Link, swearing to help him however she can.[23]

Returning to reality, Mineru continues to speak to Link from her Construct. She reveals that she lived through the founding of Hyrule, and during that time, she lost her body and became a Spirit.[24] Since then, she waited in the Purah Pad for Link to awaken her, and she blames Demon King Ganondorf for delaying their meeting.[25] In her era, Zelda appeared after awakening as the Sage of Time, and she was involved in a tragedy.[26] She decides to tell Link about Zelda's resolve,[27][28] which starts "The Imprisoning War" Memory.

Although Demon King Ganondorf was sealed during the Imprisoning War, Mineru reveals that she was injured and would soon die.[29] In that time, Zelda came to her with the Decayed Master Sword, which is where it went after it disappeared from the Temple of Time.[30][note 3] This starts the "Critical Decisions" Memory.

Following Mineru's meeting with Zelda, the two of them began to prepare to guide Link in the future, which involved Mineru residing in the Purah Pad as a Spirit.[32] Using a forbidden process, Zelda was able to restore the Master Sword, which Link must use to defeat Demon King Ganondorf.[33] Mineru believes that the restored Master Sword can be found somewhere in Hyrule, and she tells Link to see out the Great Deku Tree to find it.[34][note 4] She then urges Link to continue his journey to defeat Demon King Ganondorf.[36] Afterwards, "Guidance from Ages Past" will be completed, and "Trail of the Master Sword" will begin.

Objectives

Stage Description
1 You found a strange relic on Dragonhead Island that emitted a narrow beam of light. The beam appears to extend straight down to the surface.

When you touched the relic, a mysterious voice said to take it an "follow the light."
2 The relic's light guided you to a hidden path that led underground.

From there, the relic started emitting the beam again, leading you down the path.
3 When you placed the relic on a pedestal in the underground chamber, a path opened into the Depths. The mysterious voice spoke again, saying "You must hurry... We must meet as soon as possible." When you arrived in a vast space within the Depths, the relic began to emit another beam to guide you toward the ruins.
4 Within the vast ruins was a pedestal with a hollow carved out in the shape of a person. When you placed the relic where the head would go, the voice spoke again. Calling herself Mineru, the Sage of Spirit, she asked you to visit four depots for the parts to build a body that could house her spirit, allowing you to truly meet her.
5 When you placed the parts collected from the four depots in the pedestal, they connected and came to life as a large construct. Mineru's voice then asked you to bring her to the secret stone of spirit using the power of the construct.

From Mineru's voice, you learned the location of the secret stone.
6 Alongside the construct, you headed to the Temple of Spirit, where the secret stone is housed. Another construct, animated by the Demon King's magic, awaited you there.

You must vanquish this construct to claim the secret stone of spirit.
7 You vanquished the construct animated by the Demon King's magic. The remains of that construct, built by Mineru long ago, vanished along with the gloom filling the temple.

The secret stone of spirit sparkles atop the altar.
Complete At last you met the voice's owner, Mineru, the Sage of Spirit. She transferred her spirit from the Purah Pad, where it had resided, into the secret stone. She told you of a battle with the Demon King in the distant past, known as the Imprisoning War, and of Princess Zelda's resolve to restore the Master Sword. Mineru's spirit will aid you in the construct she inhabits.

  2. If Link interacts with the Zonai Relic prior to beginning the Main Quest "Regional Phenomena", he will not be able to activate it, feeling a sense that the time is not yet right to do so.[3]
  3. If Link already has the Master Sword, Mineru will make note of this.[31]
  4. If Link already has the Master Sword, Mineru sees it.[35]
