Biography

The Legend of Zelda

TLoZ Princess Zelda Artwork 2.png

The Zelda in The Legend of Zelda is the first Zelda appearing in the The Legend of Zelda series, and the fourth Zelda chronologically in the Fallen Hero Timeline.

An army of evil, led by Ganon, seeks to possess the Triforce to plunge the land of Hyrule into darkness.[36] Stealing the Triforce of Power, Ganon sought to find the last known piece, the Triforce of Wisdom.

Princess Zelda, as a member of the bloodline that carries and protects the Triforce of Wisdom, broke the Triforce piece into eight fragments and hid them throughout the realm in an effort to avoid its possession under Ganon's hand. At the same time, she sent out her handmaiden, Impa, to look for a hero to save the land.[37] Ganon learned of what Zelda had done and imprisoned her within his lair under Death Mountain, surrounded by a wall of flame.[38]

Link eventually finds the eight fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom scattered throughout Hyrule and travels to Death Mountain where, upon defeating Ganon, he frees Zelda from her prison, returning peace to the land.[39][40]

The Adventure of Link

After the events of The Legend of Zelda during the Era of Decline, the Princess Zelda who split the Triforce of Wisdom is not seen as Link, under Impa's guidance, moves north to find the sleeping body of the Ancient Princess Zelda. Impa tells Link that at the beginning of the Era of Decline, she refused to reveal the location of the Triforce of Courage to her brother, the unworthy Prince of Hyrule. In retaliation for this, the Prince ordered the palace Wizard to place her in an eternal sleep. In order to undo the Tragedy of the Ancient Princess Zelda, Link undergoes the necessary trials to be worthy of wielding the Triforce of Courage and uses the complete Triforce to lift the curse upon her.

After Link informs Princess Zelda of Ganondorf's impending betrayal, she instructs the Hero of Time to leave Hyrule with his Crest of Courage and the final key to the Door of Time, the Ocarina of Time. She does this so that Ganondorf will never be able to enter the Sacred Realm and collect the full Triforce, subverting the events of the Adult Era. Before he leaves, she teaches him the "Song of Time" with the hope that the Goddess of Time will protect him.

Zelda is born to the headmaster of Skyloft's Knight Academy, Gaepora, during the Sky Era. Though she is raised as a normal girl, she begins to hear a call from below the Cloud Barrier during the Knight Academy's 25th Wing Ceremony. After the Wing Ceremony, she is pulled down to the Surface by a dark tornado, and falls into the care of Impa. Through Impa, she learns that she is the mortal reincarnation of the Goddess Hylia, duty-bound to stop a Demon known as Demise from destroying the world.

With Impa's help, she purifies her body and regains her divine powers. She does this to aid her chosen hero and childhood friend, Link, earn the right to use the ultimate power of the Triforce to wish for the destruction of Demise.

A Link Between Worlds

Breath of the Wild

Artwork of Zelda from The Champions' Ballad

In the Era of the Wilds, Zelda is an aspiring scholar who struggles with her identity as heritor of the Royal Family of Hyrule's divine powers because of her late mother's untimely death. Despite not possessing the sealing powers herself, Zelda's mother received training from Zelda's grandmother in order to pass on the knowledge of how to use them. However, Zelda's mother died one year before her formal training was due to begin, leaving her with no-one to guide her.

As a result of this and heavy pressure to complete her duties from her father, King Rhoam, she was unable to awaken her sealing powers before the day of the Great Calamity. Only when her personal knight, Link, sustained mortal injuries trying to protect her was she able to use her powers to temporarily seal Calamity Ganon. Instructing her Sheikah attendants to place Link in the Shrine of Resurrection to recover from his injuries, she set out to Hyrule Castle to stay Calamity Ganon's reincarnation.

Over the course of a century, her hold on Calamity Ganon began to weaken, finally breaking just as Link enters Hyrule Castle's Sanctum. She appears to help Link finally seal Calamity Ganon once more after he destroys the physical form of Dark Beast Ganon, ostensibly expending the last of her connection to her power. Having completed her divine duties, she finds comfort in no longer being able to hear the voice within the Master Sword and makes plans to rebuild her Kingdom. For her deeds, she is known as the Princess Who Sealed Calamity Ganon.

Tears of the Kingdom

Zelda appears in Tears of the Kingdom. Picking up where the true ending left off, Zelda alongside Link traversed through a cave, only to find a mummified Gerudo corpse with an ethereal hand touching its chest, as well as it attracting Malice. She eventually ended up separated from Link, and witnessed the corpse revive itself via the malice.

The Legend of Zelda (TV Series)

Princess Zelda as seen in the animated series

In The Legend of Zelda TV series, Princess Zelda looks vastly different from her official artwork of the first two games. She is almost as tall as Link, has waist-length blond hair and wears a blue tiara on her head. Instead of wearing a dress, which only appears in two episodes, she wears white pants with a pair of brown, long boots and dons a purple long-sleeved shirt underneath her blue vest.

Princess Zelda is portrayed as a proud, athletic and stubborn princess with a fiery temper, although she does have her sense of humor[41] and a romantic, sensitive side.[42] In addition to running the kingdom part-time for her father, King Harkinian, she often accompanies Link on his adventures and proves to be an invaluable addition in combat, departing from the traditional role of a princess:[43][44][45] when Link asks her to stay so that he can defeat the monsters himself, the princess refuses to just sit down and watch and instead chooses to join him in battling the foes.[46] She excels in the use of a bow and is what she uses for most of her battles; however, she is further seen skillfully wielding a Boomerang, a Crossbow and, as seen in "The Missing Link", even Link's Crissword. Often times Link provides these weapons for her,[47] but as demonstrated in "Sing for the Unicorn", Zelda also has the capability of magically making a bow appear on her hand.

Although Princess Zelda mostly fights with weapons, she is the wielder of the Triforce of Wisdom and is knowledgeable in its magic capabilities, often using its magical powers to save Link or herself from dangerous situations.[48] Zelda can only use magic when she has the Triforce of Wisdom with her;[49] she usually makes it float and seems to be the only one who can do so.[50]

The series exemplifies a romantic relationship between Link and Zelda. Link is always begging the princess for a kiss;[51] however, even when she agrees to indulge him,[52][53][54] it never occurs: they are interrupted by monsters, Spryte or any number of unfortunate circumstances such as something making Zelda so mad she no longer wants to kiss the young hero. Despite this, it is revealed in "The Missing Link" that Zelda loves Link,[55] although she tries to deny it and say that she only likes him "a little."[56] She most likely kept it a secret from him so as to prevent it from going into Link's head.[57] To cover this up, she sometimes makes fun of Link and for the most part has a love-hate relationship with him throughout the show.[41][58]

Captain N: The Game Master

Princess Zelda in Captain N: The Game Master

Princess Zelda makes four episode appearances in Captain N: The Game Master. Zelda's personality only changed slightly from the Zelda animated series, as she's still portrayed as a proud, fair princess who rules the kingdom of Hyrule. She seems to be good friends with Princess Lana, and they both regard each other highly. Like in the Zelda cartoons, she is skillful with the bow and often uses it during battle. Zelda's outfit retains the same style and colors from the Zelda show, but her purple shirt is now short-sleeved on her left arm, and the shirt leaves her stomach exposed. Cynthia Preston reprises her role as the voice actress for the princess.

In the episode "Having a Ball", after King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard steal the Triforce of Power and Courage, Zelda's energy wanes, which causes her to faint momentarily. It is explained by Link that Zelda has a magic bond with the Triforce, and as such, she can tell if something has happened to the sacred relic.[59] As more time passes with the three Triforce pieces separated, the weaker Zelda becomes, and eventually, she could die.[60] Like in the Zelda cartoons, the princess is capable of communicating with the Triforce of Wisdom, as shown when Zelda picks up the remaining Triforce piece and uses it to tell Kevin and the rest of the team to know where the two remaining pieces are.[61] Once the three Triforce pieces are reunited, the show exemplifies Zelda's unique magical powers when wielding the complete sacred relic: she creates a warp zone to make King Hippo, Eggplant Wizard and Mother Brain disappear from Hyrule.[62]

The Legend of Zelda (Valiant Comics)

File:Princess Zelda VC.png
Princess Zelda in the Valiant Comics

In the The Legend of Zelda comics by Valiant Comics by Valiant Comics, Princess Zelda's overall appearance is the same as in the animated series, and her personality is also similar. Here, the princess is portrayed as a strong and brave woman. Self-reliant and confident, Zelda is a skilled fighter, proficient in archery and horseback riding.[63][64] She also possesses a quick wit and usually manages to avoid Link's attempts of affection towards her, but for all her strengths, she possesses a soft heart that is open to her people and friends. Because of this, Zelda is always willing to do anything for her people and country,[65] even if it means risking her life,[66] which makes her dear to all the citizens of Hyrule.[67][68] Zelda is also not afraid to take challenges head-on, or even fight Ganon on her own,[69] as she helps Link out in his adventures any time she can despite the young hero's advice not to.[65][70][71]

Just like in the animated series, Link can be seen trying to steal a kiss from Zelda any time the chance arises,[72] but they always seem to get interrupted by Ganon's minions or Zelda changing her mind.[73] Unlike the animated series, however, the comic makes it clear that Link and Zelda love each other, as they both plainly state it to one another several times throughout their adventures.[71][74] Furthermore, in "Assault," Zelda is even willing to give up the Triforce of Wisdom to Ganon in exchange for Link's life,[75] while the young hero is always ready to do anything to protect the princess from danger.[71]

The Triforce of Wisdom is guarded by Princess Zelda, who uses its guidance to help her rule the kingdom wisely. Moreover, the princess can conjure powerful magic spells with the sacred relic when she is in danger.[76] In order to be successful with protecting the Triforce of Wisdom, she has acquired many friends to help her, including her hero and rescuer Link, her nursemaid Impa, King Harkinian, the soldiers of Hyrule, and her horse, Storm. Zelda sleeps in the northern tower in the palace, which is adjacent to the room where the Triforce of Wisdom rests.

During one adventure, Zelda decides that due to Ganon's constant attempts to capture her and the Triforce, the best course of action is to leave Hyrule, taking the Triforce of Wisdom with her.[77] She had heard of a magical flute within the Fifth Palace that would teleport her to a distant place, where Ganon would not find the Triforce.[78] With Link's help, she makes it to the Palace but in the end, she decides that the safest place to be is within Link's reach.[79] With this in mind, she insists that Link train her to better protect herself, leading her to venture into the Level 1 alone.[80] However, the training ends in her rescuing Link, who had been captured by a Wizzrobe. During this adventure, she wields Link's Magical Sword, shield, and bombs as she fights multiple enemies, including a Gohma and a Dodongo. Although she is successful, she has immense difficulty doing it in a manner similar to Link's, and it isn't until she obtains a Magic Bow that she learns to develop her own style.[63]

Later on, when Link obtained the Triforce of Power and shot a powerful spell at the princess when she refused to give up the Triforce of Wisdom, the Triforce of Courage abandoned Link's heart and moved to Zelda, which she used to face Link and convince him to relinquish the Triforce of Power.[81][82][83]

The Crystal Trap

File:Zelda's Dagger.png
Princess Zelda, as seen in The Crystal Trap

In The Crystal Trap, Princess Zelda has much of the same personality as seen in the Valiant Comics and the Television series. She is portrayed as a smart, brave and capable woman, with great skill as both a princess and a fighter. She is proficient in the use of her Bow, which is her main offensive weapon,[84][85] but also resorts to using Dagger whenever the bow and arrow is an inefficient weapon against certain enemies.[86]

Princess Zelda lives in North Castle, along with the King of Hyrule, where they both try to keep the Triforce of Wisdom away from Ganon's grasp. Impa still serves as the princess's nursemaid,[87] although it is also mentioned that a man named Estragon was both her mentor and teacher some time in the past.[88] Despite the fact that Zelda is best friends with Link, the young hero seems to enjoy annoying the princess whenever the chance arises, although Zelda also does not miss the opportunity to poke fun at the young hero.[89][90][91][92]

In The Crystal Trap, Link and Princess Zelda are running inside the Midoro Palace trying to escape from Ganon's grasp. However, the evil wizard finds them and eventually encases Link in a Crystal. Ganon explains that since he cannot obtain the Triforce of Courage and Wisdom from Link and Zelda respectively, he used a Magic Scroll which cast a spell to encase both pieces of the Triforce, including the Triforce of Courage encased in Link's heart.[93] Zelda is now forced to seek the three items dictated in the Fairy's Scroll that will help free Link from the Crystal, but she has just 24 hours before the young hero gets trapped inside the crystal forever.[94]

Eventually, Princess Zelda finds the Magic Honey, the Handprint, and the Magnifying Glass and uses them to shatter the Crystal. With Link now free, the young duo head off to find the Spear, which is the only weapon that can defeat Ganon. With the help of Zelda's friend Greenbeard, Link obtains the Spear and uses it to defeat Ganon once and for all.[95]

The Shadow Prince

The Shadow Prince focuses on Link as he tries to prove to everyone about Charles of Moria's true intentions, who is a mysterious knight from the land of Moria. Princess Zelda is quick to trust Charles after he saves Link and the princess from a near-fatal attack from Moblins, and admires him for all the kind and brave deeds he has done, such as defeating single-handledly a Darknut that ambushed them later in the woods.[96] Despite her liking towards Charles, she hesitates when her father, the King of Hyrule, wishes to show the Triforce of Wisdom to the Morian knight since she is afraid to lose another piece of the Triforce to Ganon.[97]

After Link uses the Mirror of Truth to reveal that Charles is in fact Ganon in disguise, the false knight takes the Triforce of Wisdom and takes Zelda with him as well, but afterward leaves her before he heads off into the woods. Zelda tells Link where Charles headed off to, and the young hero promptly defeats the Morian knight. With the Triforce of Wisdom in hand, Princess Zelda apologizes to the young hero for having been so foolish, then proceeds to celebrate Link's victory along with the rest of the kingdom.[98]

The Faces of Evil

TFoE Zelda Cutscene Sprite.png

In The Faces of Evil, Zelda is the daughter of King Harkinian, whom she lives with in Hyrule Castle. She plays a small role in The Faces of Evil; when Link prepares to leave for Koridai after being informed that the island was captured by Ganon, he asks Zelda for a kiss of luck, but she rejects him. Later during his quest, Link and Gwonam learn that Zelda had been captured by Ganon during Link's absence and was put under a sleeping spell. While exploring Fortress Centrum, Link finds her asleep in its tower, but she turns out to actually be Goronu in disguise who ambushes him. After defeating Ganon, Link finds the real Zelda asleep in her cell in Ganon's Lair. Her curse is broken and she awakes when Link rings a nearby gong. He exclaims that he just saved her, though she teasingly does not believe him. Gwonam then arrives to take the pair back to Hyrule, and Zelda again rejects Link when he asks for a kiss.

The Wand of Gamelon

Zelda plays a much larger role as the playable character in The Wand of Gamelon. She is informed by her father, King Harkinian, that the island of Gamelon was seized by Ganon, and its ruler Duke Onkled is in urgent need of assistance. Zelda pleads with her father not to go when he volunteers to leave for the island, but is instead ordered to send Link should he fail to return. Impa reassures Zelda that the King will safely return, according to the Triforce of Wisdom. Despite the Triforce's prophecy, both King Harkinian and Link go missing, prompting Zelda and Impa to go to Gamelon to find them. There Zelda ventures to defeat Ganon's minions, who have seized control of the island. She eventually learns of her father's capture and Duke Onkled's betrayal, and works with Lord Kiro in finding Duke Onkled and coercing him into revealing Ganon's location. At the end of her quest, Zelda confronts Ganon at Reesong Palace and defeats him with the Wand of Gamelon, an item she found during her quest. Although King Harkinian is saved, Link remains missing, which Zelda quickly notices. Lady Alma, a woman who Zelda met on her quest, disregards him and Zelda retaliates by breaking her mirror. This causes Link to inexplicably reappear, implying that he was trapped inside it. When asked what had happened, Zelda laughs and tells Link they are about to have a feast.

Zelda's Adventure

Zelda in Zelda's Adventure

In Zelda's Adventure, Zelda is once again the playable character. Unlike her appearance from the previous CD-i games, she appears to be more humble and does not speak at all, akin to Link in canon games. She wields the Wand as opposed to a sword, which she uses as her main weapon and to cast offensive spells. She is summoned to Tolemac by the astronomer Gaspra as his chosen warrior to combat Ganon, who had stolen the land's Celestial Signs and had captured Link. Zelda thus embarks on her mission to recover the seven Signs and rescue Link, guided by Gaspra and Shurmak along the way. She battles the keepers of Tolemac's Shrines where the Signs are kept, and meets many other helpful and tricky characters. Eventually she finds the final Celestial Sign, but is stopped by Ganon and thrown into a series of fights in the Vision Henge, eventually leading to the final showdown with Ganon. Zelda defeats him, thus freeing Link and returning peace and light to Hyrule and Tolemac.

Princess Zelda first appears as a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. series in Super Smash Bros. Melee. She is depicted as her adult form as seen in Ocarina of Time, wearing a pink and white dress with pink shoes. She is regarded by most as a lightweight character, being easy to kick off the screen. Although Zelda is considered to be slow-moving, she possess some mighty strength through her spell-based attacks. Zelda can use her Transform ability to turn herself into her alter-ego Sheik at any point during a battle, which turns her into a quicker character with a completely different set of moves.

Hyrule Warriors

File:HW Zelda Render.png
Zelda from
Hyrule Warriors

In Hyrule Warriors, Princess Zelda is the leader of the Hyrulean Army and the princess of Hyrule. As an incarnation of Zelda, she is the embodiment of Hylia and holds the Triforce of Wisdom. She is a playable character who has a Rapier as her basic weapon and also utilizes her Bow and Light Arrows. She uses a rapid combination of the Spells from Ocarina of Time (Nayru's Love, Farore's Wind, and Din's Fire) as her Special Technique while she has her Focus Spirit enabled. She also has a unique mechanic where she can summon orbs of light to enhance her attacks.

An alternate weapon she acquires is the Baton, with her default being the Wind Waker. She uses it to conjure magical music made from wind and lightning in order to attack. While not as speedy as her default, she is given attacks with a lot more range and crowd control. Some of the songs she can use are "Saria's Song", the "Song of Storms", the "Earth God's Lyric", and the "Wind God's Aria".

In the Twilight Princess DLC Pack, her third weapon is the Dominion Rod. The rod can be used to summon and control one of two different statues at a time. They act as a second weapon in that they attack alongside the Rod's standard light-energy attacks. They also greatly increase the range and power of Zelda's regular attacks and combos. It is of the Dark Element.

Zelda appears to be based upon her Twilight Princess appearance, but slightly more stylized. Her default battle outfit is modeled on her usual pink dress but includes greaves, a fauld, gauntlets, pauldrons, and a breastplate. Her Twilight Princess, Ocarina of Time, and Skyward Sword incarnations are included with the Wisdom costumes set.

In Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, her Breath of the Wild outfit is included when completing the first Scenario along with Link's Champion's Tunic.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U

Zelda makes a return in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. Her moveset is mostly the same as the one in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, just with new visual effects. She is now a separate character from Sheik, which adds a new move to her set called Phantom Slash, in which she summons a Phantom that can be used either as a ranged attack or as defense.

Zelda relies on magic-based attacks to fight, which are the spells seen in Ocarina of Time; Din's Fire, Farore's Wind, and Nayru's Love. However, they behave differently from their original appearance. Din's Fire is a fireball which Zelda can control, allowing it to travel long distances in a straight or curved lines. Farore's Wind can be used anywhere, serving as Zelda's recovery move. Nayru's Love starts out in its surrounding diamond form, but shatters moments later. The shards deal slight damage to anyone surrounding Zelda. The spell does not prevent melee damage as in Ocarina of Time, but it can now reflect projectile attacks.

Zelda reappears as a playable Fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Her design and moves are now based on those in A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds. On a related note, this marks the first time Zelda has a design that is not from the same game as either Link or Ganondorf. According to Masahiro Sakurai, this was because Zelda from Breath of the Wild was determined to not be an appropriate fighter in the game after playing through an advance prerelease copy of the game as part of research material for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Zelda also has a new Final Smash, the Triforce of Wisdom.

Zelda appears as a Fighter Spirit that can be obtained by either clearing "Wisdom Prevails", Zelda's Classic Mode Route, or by purchasing it from the Shop for G 300. Zelda also appears as the Young Zelda Primary Spirit, the Zelda (Ocarina of Time) Primary Spirit, the Zelda (Breath of the Wild), Support Spirit, the Zelda (The Wind Waker) Primary Spirit, and the Zelda (Spirit Tracks) Primary Spirit.

The Young Zelda, Zelda (Breath of the Wild) Spirits can be obtained through Spirit Battles. The Zelda (Ocarina of Time), Zelda (The Wind Waker), and Zelda (Spirit Tracks) Spirits can be obtained by leveling the Young Zelda, Tetra, and Phantom Spirits to Level 99 and enhancing them.

The Young Zelda Spirit Battle takes place at Hyrule Castle and is a reference to Princess Zelda and Link from Ocarina of Time. The Zelda (Breath of the Wild) Spirit Battle is a reference to the events of Breath of the Wild following the second Great Calamity. In order to beat Zelda, Zero Suit Samus (Urbosa), Falco (Revali), Donkey Kong (Daruk), and Inkling (Mipha) Fighters must be defeated. To further cement their ties to their allegorical counterparts, Zero Suit Samus wields a Killing Edge and Donkey Kong wields an Ore Club, representative of the Scimitar of the Seven and the Boulder Breaker, respectively.

In World of Light, Zelda briefly speaks in the opening scene, where she tells the other fighters to stow their fear, as it's "now or never" regarding taking out the armada of Master Hands that Galeem summoned.

Nomenclature

Shigeru Miyamoto stated that the Princess Zelda's name originated from Zelda Fitzgerald, the wife of the acclaimed author, F. Scott Fitzgerald.[99] The name "Zelda" ultimately derives from "Griselda," which may come from the Germanic elements gris ("gray") and hild ("battle"). Griselda itself means "happy", "lucky", or "blessed", while Grizelda means "endless patience".
