The Great Plateau was the birthplace of the Hyrule Kingdom.[4] It is a sacred place where rites were once held by the Kingdom,[5] particularly at the Temple of Time. However, during the second Great Calamity, its entrance was destroyed, making travel to and from the Great Plateau impossible for normal people without the use of tools such as Paragliders. After Link's Slumber of Restoration in the Shrine of Resurrection, the only person to be found on it is the Old Man, a mysterious fellow with a deep knowledge of the Sheikah.[6] Though Monsters are not meant to step foot on the sacred Plateau,[5] they have since occupied it. Guardians under Calamity Ganon's control also found their way atop the Plateau, though they are now rendered as immobile Decayed Guardians. The Great Plateau's architecture mirrors that of Hyrule Castle, with the Great Plateau featuring more feminine statues and the Castle featuring more masculine designs.[7]
The Great Plateau undergoes several changes in Master Mode. A White-Maned Lynel occupies the forest north of the Old Man's Cabin and several Treasure Chests appear on platforms held by Sky Octoroks.

The Great Plateau appears in Tears of the Kingdom. A total of four Chasms have opened, all in the locations of the Ancient Shrines from Breath of the Wild.
During the Era of Myth, the Great Plateau was the seat of Hyrule Kingdom. Its step pyramid castle was located at the site of the River of the Dead, which did not exist yet. The Temple of Time, which is now rotated to face south and found in the Sky as part of the Great Sky Island, sat over a nameless lake which no longer exists. This lake fed a river that passed between the Temple of Time and the site of the Eastern Abbey. However, as this lake no longer exists, only the wetlands surrounding the Old Man's Cabin and a dry riverbed can be found in the present time. The walls of the Great Plateau featured a different design,[note 1] and there was once a road leading through Mount Hylia to an observation point at the south of the Plateau. Two unidentified Shrines of Light once stood at the sites where Keh Namut Shrine and Owa Daim Shrine were later built, and ultimately where the Great Plateau West Chasm and Great Plateau South Chasm formed during the Upheaval. After the Temple of Time was raised into the Sky by the Six Sages, a new Temple of Time, later christened the Temple of Time Ruins, was built in its place. In the Era of Myth, the Great Plateau featured a much warmer climate. However, a Freezing Climate formed around Mount Hylia at some point.

- ↑ Curiously, a broken portion of Hylian-construction wall that is identical to the wall found in the present time can be seen in "Birth of the Demon King".

"[What do you mean?] It has been quite some time since I've seen or heard of the Sheikah Slate... Long ago, an advanced civilization known as the Sheikah inhabited these lands. It was the power and wisdom of the Sheikah that saved this land time and time again. But their civilization disappeared long ago...or so it is said. It is interesting, however, to think...that something of them might still remain hidden away in a shrine such as this. These shrines are tucked away in numerous places all across this land." — Old Man (Breath of the Wild) - ↑ Creating a Champion, Dark Horse Books, pg. 237
