Korok Seeds are items in Breath of the Wild.[1]
Location and Uses
Korok Seeds are given by Koroks when they are found throughout Hyrule Kingdom.[2] They possess a distinct smell.[1] When {{Term|BotW|Link|link]] receives his first Seed, he is asked to return it to the Korok Hestu.[3] Korok Seeds are actually the beads used in Hestu's Maracas. When first found, Hestu asks Link to retrieve his Maracas from a group of Bokoblin nearby. After Link returns them, Hestu realizes the Seeds were taken by the other Koroks as part of a prank.[4][5]
In exchange for Korok Seeds, Hestu will add one slot to Link's Weapon, Bow, or Shield stashes,[6] with some kind of mysterious power.[7] Link can fully upgrade his inventory with only 441 Korok Seeds. If all 900 Seeds are returned to Hestu, he will reward Link with a "gift of friendship."[8][9]
The way Korok's hide and present Link with mini-challenges come in a variety of themes and difficulties, all of these tasks can be broken down into 11 different types.
Rock Pattern
These types of puzzles involve rocks that have been arranged into geometric patterns, often in the shapes of circles, spirals, or crosses. When Link first comes across these puzzle, there is at least one missing rock from the design, and it most be found and returned to the rest before the Korok will reveal it self.
Cube Pattern
Found in the side of mountains or standing upright, these small metal cubes are configured in symmetrical arrangements, with one missing a cube in its design. These statue-like pairs can be side-by-side or encompassing points of interests like Waterfalls. Link must locate the missing cube, or transfer it from one structure to the other, with Magnesis. Once the missing cube has been placed into its proper placement, it will shrink and spin quickly for a brief moment, only to return to its normal size in a poof of smoke. This action is then followed by the Korok appearing before Link.
Circles
Link can come across a verity of objects that have been placed into tight circles found in bodies of water, most of these circles are just larger than Link himself. These groupings are commonly constructed from rocks, but can be seen made from water lilies and other natural objects. To complete the puzzle, a rock needs to be thrown into the center of these circles, normally provided rocks are found nearby and are at a higher point then the circle its self. If no rocks have been placed nearby, Link can dive into the center himself, completing the puzzle and revealing the Korok.
Natural Hiding Spot
Like the name suggests, these types of challenges involve searching out Koroks that have concealed themselves under and behind a verity of natural objects found threw out Hyrule. From small rocks, Ice Blocks, clay pots, and in piles of leaves,[10] a Korok could be hidden in and under many things.
Leaves with Fairy Dust
More often seen racing around in open areas, Leaves with Fairy Dust must be caught by Link to reveal the hidden Korok. [11] Sometimes these effects can be located in camouflaged places,[12] or at the peaks of high terrain.
Race | Horse Hurdles
Normally accompanied by a tree stump with a leaf symbol and a ticking timer, [13] Link must begin and finish a race within a set amount of time. The finish line represented by a ring of lights, which can be low to the ground or way above the trees. These races testing Links sprinting, climbing, gliding, and swimming abilities. These types of puzzles can also involve the need for a Horse partner, as fences, can sometimes be found lined conveniently in a row. Jumping these fences with a horse will expose the Korok. [14]
Food Offering
Offering certain items, more often than not a Food, in the trays of aligned statues, can also reveal a Korok.[15][16] Sometimes certain items must be submitted, with hints of the certain item nearby.
Flower Trails
Following daffodils that appear and disappear, or flowers that have to be approached in proper order will reveal a Korok.[17][18]
Archery
These types of puzzles generally require the use of a Bow and come with different targets and movements. Some come as balloons, and may not appear til Link is standing in a certain location, marked by a colored Pinwheel.[19] Other types are of positioned Apples, and soaring Acorns.
Boulders
Moving Boulders to nearby holes or craters, by rolling, Stasis, and even Magnesis.[20]
Tree Patterns
Trees growing adjacent from one another with certain fruit arrangements can also be the work of a Korok. Removing extra fruit in order for all trees to be identical will reveal a Korok.[21]Torches can also be treated in a similar fashion, where the odd one out needs to be lit to match.[22]
Trivia
- Hidemaro Fujibayashi, director of Breath of the Wild, confirmed that Korok Seeds are in fact Korok feces.[23]
