"Camera Work in the Depths" is a Main Quest in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]

Overview

After Link starts the "Regional Phenomena" Main Quest, Josha will go to meet Robbie at her lab in Lookout Landing.[2][3] The two can then be found arguing with each other.[4] When Link approaches them, Robbie comments on how nice the day has been.[5][6][7] Noticing Link, Robbie makes a remark about his Purah Pad and its development.[8][9] At this point, Josha becomes annoyed and accuses Robbie of not listening to her, which draws his attention back to her.[10] Josha reveals that she wants to investigate the Depths herself, but Robbie insists it is too dangerous for someone as young as she is, fearing what Purah would do to him if something happened to her.[11] Despite this, Josha claims that she needs to know more about a "figure" in order to understand the Depths.[12]

Josha's introduction

When Link asks about the figure, Josha apologizes for leaving him out of the conversation.[13] Josha explains that she has become interested in a Slate, which was brought back by the Zonai Survey Team after an investigation of the Depths.[14] She theorizes that it could be evidence of a civilization in the Depths, and she wants to search for more clues.[15] She laments that because of the danger, Robbie will not let her go.[16]

To cheer Josha up, Robbie offers to investigate the Slate with Link on her behalf.[17] He claims that they will search for a figure resembling the one of the Slate, and if they are successful, they will use the Camera to take a Picture of it to show Josha.[18] When Link expresses confusion, Robbie explains that he can use the Camera to capture a Picture of nearby scenery, which is then stored in his Album.[19] He promises to teach Link how to take Pictures in the Depths.[20] Since there are many Monsters in the Depths, Robbie also asks Link to protect him.[21] Robbie then leaves for the Hyrule Field Chasm, asking Link to meet him there when he is ready.[22]

Josha tries to ask Robbie to wait,[23] but he leaves anyway.[24] She apologizes to Link for getting him involved in her Chasm Research, revealing that Robbie can be overly eager when it comes to helping her.[25] To help Link in the Depths, Josha gives him 10 Brightbloom Seeds and a bundle of five Arrows.[26][27] She suggests that in order to navigate the Darkness, he attach the Brightbloom Seeds to Arrows he shoots, which will light up the surrounding area.[28] She then directs Link to go through the Southern Gate to reach the Hyrule Field Chasm.[29] Josha expresses her excitement to see Link's Picture, and she asks him to take care of Robbie as well.[30] Following this conversation, "Camera Work in the Depths" will begin.

At the Hyrule Field Chasm, Link will discover that Robbie has already descended into the Depths.[31] At the bottom of the Chasm, he will find Ponnick looking for Robbie.[32] When Link approaches him, he reveals that Robbie instructed him to guide Link to his location.[33] However, Ponnick did not bring enough Brightbloom Seeds to keep up with Robbie, and now he has lost him.[34] He claims that Robbie was initially only visiting the Nisoij Lightroot nearby, but he kept walking past it, [35] Ponnick then asks Link if he has any Brightbloom Seeds.[36] If Link says that he does not, Ponnick impresses upon him the danger of exploring the Depths without Light.[37] If Link claims to have Brightbloom Seeds, Ponnick will be relieved.[38] Either way, Ponnick tells him that they can be found in Caves on the Surface, and he can throw them or shoot them on Arrows to cause them to bloom into Brightblooms.[39][40] Before Link leaves, Ponnick once again expresses his sadness about not having enough Brightbloom Seeds.[41]

Once Link reaches the Nisoij Lightroot, he can find a Note on the Table written by Robbie, in which he reveals that he is heading toward the Iayusus Lightroot to the west.[42] Along the way is another Note on the Table, wherein Robbie claims to have spotted something resembling the figure on Josha's Slate.[43] Robbie can be found near a Campfire at the Iayusus Lightroot, where he points out the Statue That Points the Way that resembles Josha's Slate.[44] However, he complains about the Darkness making it difficult to see.[45] He wishes that the Iayusus Lightroot was able to give off more Light.[46][47]

After Link activates the Iayusus Lightroot, Robbie is surprised and states that he feels refreshed, comparing it to being on the Surface.[48] He then decides to begin examining the Statue That Points the Way.[49][note 1] Recalling that Link has not yet used his Camera, Robbie asks to see the Purah Pad.[51] He then discovers that the Camera and Hyrule Compendium have been locked, though he is able to fix this for him.[52] After doing so, Robbie instructs Link to take a Picture of the Statue That Points the Way, noting that this is an opportunity to learn how to use it and test that it is still working.[53]

Once the Picture has been taken, Robbie asks to see it.[54][55] When he sees it, Robbie is pleased with the results, and he is certain Josha will be too.[56] Robbie claims that in the future, there will be more for them to investigate in the Depths.[57] He then decides to return to Lookout Landing, telling Link to join him there soon.[58]

At Lookout Landing, Robbie tells Link to show Josha the Picture he took.[59] Once she sees it, Josha is excited, noting that it matches her Slate.[60] She thanks Link and claims that this is evidence of a civilization that lived in the Depths, hoping to find more of their ruins soon.[61] Although she is eager to move onto her research, Josha gives Link five pieces of Zonaite as a reward, which were found during early surveys.[62] She claims to feel a strange enemy from them, and she thinks they could be useful for finding Zelda.[63] Josha plans on sifting through the artifacts brought up from the Depths to see if she can find more Slates.[64] Once again, she thanks Robbie and Link for their help.[65] Afterwards, "Camera Work in the Depths" will be completed.

Objectives

Stage Description
1 Josha showed you an image of a figure on a piece of slate from the Depths. She thinks it's evidence of a people that once lived there.
Robbie said he'd go to the Depths to find her anything that shows another such figure. He wants you there to take a picture of it with the Purah Pad's camera, if necessary. Join him at the chasm south of Lookout Landing.
2 You found Robbie inside the chasm, down in the Depths. He unlocked your camera and asked you to give it a try, by taking a picture of a nearby statue.

The statue seems to be very similar to the figure on the slate fragment that Josha is studying.
3 You took a picture of the statue, and Robbie said it captured the mysterious figure well.

Head to Lookout Landing and show the picture to Josha.
Complete You returned to Lookout Landing with your picture of the statue. Josha said you'd made a big discovery that could lead to truly understanding what the Depths are.

She's going to search through what others have found in the Depths, hoping to find more slate fragments with these mysterious people.

  9. "Oh, it's you! You know, that Purah Pad of yours may seem perfect... But it could be even more perfect! I'll need to head back to the lab when Josha's got the Depths investigation sorted out..." — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  10. "Come ON, Goggles! Are you even listening to me?" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
"Oh! Uh, yes! Sorry, you were saying?" — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  11. "I was SAYING that I want to go investigate the Depths! Look, if you're not gonna listen to me, I'll go and jump into a chasm myself!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
"No way, no how! You can't do that! The Depths are far too vast for you to explore on your own. And we've only barely begun to look into them. I'd love to go gallivanting around down there too—who knows what wonders are at the bottom of those chasms! But no matter how wondrous they may be, it's far too dangerous for you. I'm not about to allow our young prodigy to go wandering around somewhere so unknown, so foul! If anything were to happen to Purah's favorite student, it'd be the end for me! The END!" — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  12. "But I need more on that figure! If we have more info on it, then it should help us better understand the Depths!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  13. "[What figure?] Oh, Swordsman! Sorry, I didn't mean to leave you out of the conversation." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  14. "Let me get you up to speed. Our survey team brought back some artifacts from a journey into the Depths. One of them caught my eye. This piece of slate. Specifically, the image depicted on it." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  15. "See that figure standing on two legs with one arm raised up? Well... I have a theory. I think it could be evidence that a mysterious people once lived in the Depths. That's why I want to go down there—so I can see if there are any more depictions like this one. I want to see for myself!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  16. "But Goggles here says it's too dangerous, and he won't let me go." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  17. "Josha, come on now... Tell you what. I'll go down there myself and see if I can't find anything about the figure on the slate. And Link will join me!" — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  18. "We'll start by looking for anything down there that resembles the figure on the slate. Assuming we find what we're looking for, we'll use your Purah Pad's camera to take a picture of it for Josha. A perfect plan!" — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  19. "[Camera?] You don't know about the camera? It's one of the Purah Pad's basic features! With the camera, you can capture nearby scenery as an image—one that's stored in your pad there! Sounds like you still have more to learn about the Purah Pad..." — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  20. "Well then, I'll teach you how to take pictures. Once we're down there, anyway." — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  21. "There will be lots of monsters in the Depths though. So I'll be counting on you to keep me safe." — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  22. "Let's see... I guess we should enter through the chasm to the south of Lookout Landing. I'll go on ahead. Once you're ready and rarin' to go, come and find me there. Ta-ta!" — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  23. "Wait, hang on!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  24. "Looks like he's gone..." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  25. "I'm sorry you got roped into all of this, Swordsman. Goggles means well... But when he wants to help me, he leaps before he looks." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  26. "But here, maybe this will help you out, at least." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  27. "Oh, and take this too." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  28. "The chasms are pretty deep, so light from the surface doesn't make it down there. It's pitch black! But if you attach a brightbloom seed to an arrow and shoot it, it'll light up the area. Definitely a useful trick down there!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  29. "OK, you'll want to head straight out of Lookout Landing's southern gate. You'll find the chasm Goggles used just outside." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  30. "I don't know too much about how your camera works... But I'm counting on you to bring me that picture. Oh, and please look after Goggles for me!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  31. "WH-WHOA! HEY! What's the big idea! You can't just walk up behind someone who's standing on the edge of a chasm! My colleague who works with me on the Zonai Survey Team is down there. What would happen if I slipped and fell on him, Huh? HUH! Don't startle me again! I'm deep in my investigation work at the moment." — Daval (Tears of the Kingdom)
  32. "How far did Robbie go?" — Ponnick (Tears of the Kingdom)
  33. "Are you Link? Pleasure to meet you. I am Ponnick, from the Zonai Survey Team. Robbie told me to guide you to him once you arrived." — Ponnick (Tears of the Kingdom)
  34. "But he rushed along with such haste that I didn't bring enough brightbloom seeds, and now I've run out. So I lost sight of him..." — Ponnick (Tears of the Kingdom)
  35. "I thought he was taking a short walk over to that glowing area over there. Then he just kept going... and going... And last I saw him, he was heading way out there, off to the west." — Ponnick (Tears of the Kingdom)
  36. "Do you have any brightbloom seeds with you?" — Ponnick (Tears of the Kingdom)
  37. "[I don't] Oh, that's no good at all. Light from the surface doesn't reach down here, as you might have noticed. It's incredibly dangerous to explore here without a light source." — Ponnick (Tears of the Kingdom)
  38. "[I do.] Oh, that's great news. Light from the surface doesn't reach down here, as you might have noticed. You'd be risking your life to wander here without a light source, you know." — Ponnick (Tears of the Kingdom)
  39. "You can easily get brightbloom seeds from caves, and they'll light up if struck, so they're pretty easy to use too. We use the seeds all the time on the Zonai Survey Team. The simplest way is to throw them with your hand." — Ponnick (Tears of the Kingdom)
  40. "Those of us skilled enough with a bow will attach them to arrows and fire them off into the distance down here." — Ponnick (Tears of the Kingdom)
  41. "Although, this time, Robbie grabbed me in such a rush that I didn't gather enough in advance..." — Ponnick (Tears of the Kingdom)
  42. "Hey, you!

It's REALLY dark down here. Not one bit of light gets here from the surface. Even with my goggles, I can hardly see.

I really should have brought some brightbloom seeds with me.

As one of the few sources of light, the glowing root growing down from above has piqued my curiosity.

I'm not sure what it is, but it looks harmless enough. This place is roughly under the shrine on the surface. Hmm...

Anyway, I'm off to the glowing root I see shining west of here, so you better hurry up and get moving!
" — Note on the Table (Tears of the Kingdom)
  43. "Hey, you. Still alive? Looks like this place is swimming in gloom!

Get too close to that stuff and you're asking for trouble. If a guy didn't have any brightblooms, it'd be curtains!

Then again, it's my first time down here, and I haven't kicked the bucket... So I'm sure you'll be fine.

I've just spotted something of interest through my goggles. It's shaped like that figure Josha wants us to find.

I'll be continuing to head west toward one of those glowing roots I see ahead. See ya soon!
" — Note on the Table (Tears of the Kingdom)
  44. "Hey, you! You're finally here! Take a look at this. I can barely make it out, but this statue here... It's standing tall on two legs, one arm raised high... It looks an awful lot like the figure Josha showed us on the piece of slate, don't you think?" — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  45. "Even if it is, it's too dang dark!" — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  46. "If only that huge, glowing root could give off more light!" — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  47. "I won't be able to show you what I've discovered with it this dark. If only that huge, glowing root was providing more light..." — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  48. "What?! Look at how bright that thing got! That light down in this dark is downright refreshing. Hm... In fact, it's so luminous, it's almost like... Like we're on the surface! Just standing near it makes me feel so much better. How strange." — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  49. "Now, let's get a better look at this thing!" — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  50. "Hey, it's you! You're finally here! I need to show you what I've found." — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  51. "All right! Get that camera of yours ready. It's time to put it to work. That's right! I forgot you hadn't used the camera when we last spoke. Very curious indeed, given it's one of the Purah Pad's basic features. Hmm... Give me that Purah Pad for a second, all right?" — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  52. "Well! There's the problem! Your camera is locked. And so's your Hyrule Compendium. Hang on. If I remember correctly... You press this while you pull this, and then you tap that, and..." — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  53. "Boom. Now you should be able to use both the camera and your Hyrule Compendium. So! Go capture a picture of that statue! This is a good chance to verify that it's working properly too. Test it out. Experience is the best teacher, after all! Once you've captured the image, come back here. I'll want to see how it looks." — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  54. "Hey, you! How'd that go? If you've captured an image of that statue with your camera, then hurry up and show me! I'd like to see how it looks!" — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  55. "So? Did you get a good picture?" — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  56. "Stupendous! Looks like you've captured it well. I'm sure Josha will be satisfied with this." — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  57. "Lighting up that immense root... Getting us a picture of the statue... You've just started helping us research what's down here, but soon enough we're going to have even more to investigate." — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  58. "Well then, it's time I head back up to the surface. See you at Lookout Landing. Don't make Josha wait too long for that picture!" — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  59. "Hey, you! Show Josha the picture you took of the statue. The figure matches up pretty well—and it looks darn cool too!" — Robbie (Tears of the Kingdom)
  60. "This is it! This does match what's on the fragment!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  61. "Thank you, Swordsman! Just like on the slate, this figure must be showing people of some sort, whoever they were! Which confirms my theory—that people lived in the Depths! I'm sure we'll find more traces of them if we keep searching." — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  62. "This is... A BIG, BIG, BIG DISCOVERY! Now, what's up next! The possibilities... there's so much more to research... Oh, but before I focus on that... There's something I want to give you as thanks for helping with this stage of my investigation. Our early surveys of the Depths found all of this. What do you think it's for?" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  63. "I feel as if these contain some kind of strange power—like maybe it's energy for something. Anyway, they might help you in your search for Princess Zelda. So hopefully you find them useful!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  64. "That fragment has helped us see the Depths in a new way. Now we're closer to understanding one of its mysteries! I'm going to sift through everything that our surveys have brought back from down there. Maybe there are even more fragments that I can piece together!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
  65. "Goggles! Swordsman! Thank you so much for going to investigate the Depths for me!" — Josha (Tears of the Kingdom)
