General information
Zelda.com is the official Zelda site, owned by Nintendo, and designed/run by POP. It has gone through many different designs and incarnations, upon the release of new games. The site layout uses flash.
Old Ways
Bad reputation amongst fans
Although it contained useful walkthroughs for some Zelda games, Zelda.com was also more widely known to be a poor resource of Zelda information, often mixing canon with fanfiction and providing statements that contradict the games. Some examples of this are:
- Says that Agahnim's magic broke the Seal on the Sacred Realm when it was in fact his imprisonment of the maidens that did so.[1]
- States that the power of the seven crystals in A Link to the Past were needed to break the barrier around Ganon's tower. The crystals held no such power, and were simply used as holding cells for the imprisoned maidens.[2]
- Says the Bombers have nothing better to do than cause trouble and goof around. The Bombers spent their time helping people.[3]
- Says the Carnival of Time is to remember every second should be savored. The game only states that it's a celebration of the alignment of the sun and the moon.[4]
- Says Death Mountain Crater is in The Legend of Zelda, not Ocarina of Time.
- Refers to the A Link to the Past Link as the Hero of Time.
- Says Ganon escapes the Sacred Realm on multiple occasions, and each time is re-sealed by Link and the Seven Sages. Ganon is only known to be sealed by Seven Sages on one occasion.[6]
- Says Ganondorf was the only male ever "allowed in" to the Gerudos, as opposed to one male being born every 100 years.[7]
- Says the Golden Land was forever changed into the Dark World because of Ganon. It was not forever changed, because Link turned it Golden again in A Link to the Past.[9]
- Says that the The Wind Waker Link's grandma gave him his tunic to help him on his journey. It was actually given to him as a tradition, and unrelated to his journey.[11]
- Claims that Link is called the Hero of Time in: The Legend of Zelda, The Adventure of Link, A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons, Four Swords, and The Minish Cap. Only Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask give him this title.
- Makes up a legend about Impa chasing Gerudo thieves out of Kakariko Village.
- Claims that Sheik imprisoned an evil spirit in the Well, instead of Impa.
- Says Koholint Island is off the coast of Eastern Hyrule. Japanese text refers to Koholint as a "southern" island.
- Also treats Koholint Island as a real location, whereas Link's Awakening revealed it to be a dream world in the ending.[12]
- Says the creator of the Link Doll in The Adventure of Link was friends with the Hero of Time.
- Claims the "magic shield" and "magic sword" from The Adventure of Link is the Mirror Shield and Master Sword. However there is not proof in the games of this claim.
- Claims Medli was a Rito Princess. In reality she was just an apprentice to Valoo. Komali is the Prince of the Rito
- Claims that "Megaton" is a brand name of hammers in Hyrule. However it is the name of a LEGENDARY hammer used by a Goron hero.
- Claims the portals to the Dark World in A Link to the Past was caused by the magic mirror. No such thing is implied.
- States Rauru guarded the Pedestal of Time.
- States Link's Awakening happens after Majora's Mask. This is never stated, and potentially contradicts evidence.
- Creates a factless story to connect Majora's Mask to A Link to the Past [13]
- Claims Ganon just stayed sealed in the Dark World at the end of A Link to the Past. However, he died.
- Calls Saria an "elfin child of the Kokiri Forest". Kokiri are spirits, not elves.
- Says the Tingle tower in The Wind Waker was to humor weary travelers.
- Calls the enemy-type Zora by their old and long ago rectified name of "Zola". Also claims they are violent female Zora. Oracle of Ages says they are not related.[15]
- Claims Zoras were made because the Godesses blessed Zora's Domain. Never mentioned in any game.
- Seems to imply that Link is a singular entity, as it attributes the deeds of both the Link of Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening to the same person. The games confirm that there are multiple Links, and that the Links of Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening are almost certainly separate people.[16]
Lack of Updating
- Beginning on September 14th, 2007, there were links to the wrong sections on the home page of Zelda.com. The Twilight Princess link along the right navigation links to the Minish Cap section of the website.
- As of August of 2009, the Zelda.com website still showcases a Phantom Hourglass Countdown Widget, which was first put online on September 14th, 2007 to lead up to the release of Phantom Hourglass. Phantom Hourglass was released on October 1st, and the countdown widget no longer was operational, but has remained on the website for the next 21+ months. While the site was updated to include information on Spirit Tracks in November 2009, the encyclopedia section remains out-of-date, not including information from newer games such as Twilight Princess or Phantom Hourglass.
New ways
As of the 13th May Zelda.com is up to date with up-to-date news of all games. It purposely had a restoration project, but Nintendo has not stated any official information about it.
Encyclopedia
Zelda.com now has a Encyclopedia consisting of many FAQ's and Walkthroughs of the games. From The Legend of Zelda to Four Swords Adventures it has a walkthrough for each of the games. However, its glossary is the same as before.
Extra Features
The site consists an image gallery with wallpapers of games in the Zelda series.
Sub sites
Zelda.com also contains sub sites. These are pages which are focused on one game, with the current ones being Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks.
