First met in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Malon is the daughter of the rancher Talon, who owns Lon Lon Ranch. She has made appearances in other Zelda games, but her character has never been developed as much as this game.

Ocarina of Time

Malon is a sweet girl who loves to sing outside the castle walls at night. She takes care of most of the duties at the ranch due to her father's laziness. Link first meets Malon in the Hyrule Castle Market where she is looking for her father. After waking him up, Malon returns to Lon Lon ranch. Later, she introduces him to a young horse named Epona and teaches him Epona's song.

Seven years later, when Link returns to the ranch, Ingo has exiled Talon, taken over the ranch, and forced Malon (who has become a young woman in this time) to slave away working while he arranges gambling on the horses. Link challenges Ingo to a race and defeats him, using Epona, and they both escape the ranch. Later, Link returns to find Malon has regained control and Ingo has strangely gone back to being "a normal, nice person" (although he looks a little roughed up!). Malon does not recognize Link until he tells her his name.

As a mini-game, Malon lets him race around the ranch to compete against her best time. When he's able to beat her time, she rewards him by sending a cow to his house in Kokiri Forest (the cow may be used as a reliable and free source of Lon Lon Milk)

Oracle of Seasons

Malon played a small role in a trading game in Oracle of Seasons. She requests you bring her a Cuccodex, which is apparently an information database of Chickens (possibly a reference to a Pokédex).

The Minish Cap

Malon made a cameo in The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. Talon and she are locked out of their house, but Link can help them by using Ezlo's power to go into the house and find the key.

Four Swords Adventures

She also appears in The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures in a brief cameo.

The Relationship between Malon and Link

There is a certain group of fans that believe that Malon is the girl Link will eventually marry, as almost every other girl Link knows turns out to be either a Sage or an Oracle. Certainly, in the manga of OoT, Malon seems to be attracted to Link when he comes to free the ranch from Ingo. However, in the manga, Link also seems to have a relationship with Princess Zelda. This relationship is toned down considerably in the game, but Malon's attraction to Link is not easily seeable either. Given the final scene of both the manga and game, at the end of the credits, it is more likely that Link will have a relationship with Zelda, but is not definate.

Trivia

  • With the Mask of Truth, Link can learn from the Gossip Stones that Malon dreams for a knight to take her away.
  • Both Malon and Talon wear "Bowser Medallions".
  • The symbols on the bottom of her dress spell 'Lon' in Hylian.
  • A Gossip Stone in front of the Temple of Time says that Malon was the original record holder of the Lon Lon Ranch obstacle course, her record being 50 seconds.
  • Malon's equivalent character(s) in Majora's Mask is Romani and Cremia.
  • In the manga, Malon ends up calling Link Mr. Hero, instead of Fairy Boy.
