Grinexx is the boss of Turtle Rock in A Link Between Worlds. It guards the Portrait of the Sage Impa. In name and basic appearance, Grinexx is based on Trinexx, the boss of Turtle Rock from A Link to the Past.

Characteristics

Grinexx begins the fight swimming in the lava underneath the arena. It attacks Link by erupting lava from its volcano-like back, which can go through the floor. During this phase, Link must use the Ice Rod to hit Grinexx as it passes under the holes of the arena, while also taking care not to get hit by the erupting bursts of lava. Grinexx will occasionally retaliate by erupting lava and chasing Link around, which can be stopped by using the Ice Rod.

After sustaining enough damage, Grinexx will jump onto the main arena and attack Link directly. Link's Sword and other weapons can now damage its head in this phase, though it will often shoot out its head with its long neck and try to bite Link. Grinexx will occasionally curl up into a boulder, releasing a devastating explosion. It can also spin around while tucked in to its shell, sliding and bouncing on the sides of the arena. The safest way for Link to avoid this attack is to stay in the corners as it bounces around the arena since Grinexx cannot fit in those areas. All of the attacks that Grinexx uses in its second phase can be deflected with the Shield; its explosion attack can be blocked by the Hylian Shield. After dealing enough damage, Grinexx will be defeated, revealing a Heart Container and Impa's painting.

Trivia

  • Grinexx may be based on the common snapping turtle, as they are known for their extended necks and their snapping bites, just like how Grinexx attacks Link.
