The Dark World, once the Golden Land, is a parallel world Ganon and Vaati are imprisoned in after their defeat. The Golden Land was created by the Goddesses after their creation of Hyrule. The true power of the Triforce can only be unlocked once entrance to the Golden Land is gained. The only way that one can enter is if a sage or an heir of Hyrule opens it.  They must also possess the power of light. When one enters the Golden Realm their true image is shown. The Golden Realm became the Dark Realm when Ganon's evil infested this easily susceptible world.  Even though he was imprisoned, Ganon becomes a powerful, atrocious monster. Through out the series, Ganon is defeated and sealed many times throughout his reign, and the relative peace is brought to the Dark World, or now, the Twilight Realm.

The Dark World, also referred to by such terms as "Evil Realm", "Dark Realm", "World of Evil", and "Underworld", is a dark, twisted realm that serves as Ganon’s territory. While the English version gives it various different titles, the Japanese version has two names for it.
The ‘’’Dark World’’’ is a dimension parallel to Hyrule, which is referred to as the Light World in contrast. It has seen two appearances in the ‘’Legend of Zelda’’ series. The Dark World debuted in A Link to the Past, making it the first of many realms alternate to Hyrule to appear in the series. Though Four Swords Adventures also a features a Dark World, it does not seem to share a connection with the one in ‘’A Link to the Past’’.

The first and more specific title is “Makai”, literally meaning Demon World. Not to be confused with hell, a Demon World is any territory ruled by a “Maou”, or Demon King. Ganon is the only known Maou in the Zelda series, as his various titles include the word Maou in every game, and no other character has such a title. Thus, in Zelda, a Makai is any territory ruled by Ganon.
A Link to the Past
In ‘’A Link to the Past’’, the Dark World is a fully explorable Overworld. Once the Sacred Realm, or Golden Land, this world was twisted when Ganondorf claimed the Golden Power, or the Triforce. Its layout is very similar to the Light World’s, but there are notable differences. It contains many of its own unique locations, namely a large structure at the Dark World’s center called the Pyramid of Power. Everything in the Dark World, naturally, appears darker. Many structures and buildings are in a state of disrepair, specifically in the Village of Outcasts. All the grass is brown and withered, and the water is an unnatural jade color.

The second title is the less specific “Yami no Sekai”, meaning World of Darkness. Much closer to the English translation of Dark World, it is also closer in meaning. A Yami no Sekai is any realm full of darkness. These terms are, however, occasionally used interchangeably in the Zelda series.
Even the world’s inhabitants are warped, due to Ganon’s power over the Triforce. People have turned into monsters like Moblins or Hinox, anthropomorphic animals like foxes or frogs, unidentifiable creatures, and even trees. Even other creatures from the Light World, like Cuccos, take on more sinister forms here. The form that living things take in the Dark World is a reflection of what is inside their hearts and minds. When Link first enters the Dark World through a Portal on Death Mountain, he is transformed into a helpless rabbit, perhaps an indication of his pure nature. While most are trapped in the Dark World, Link can return to the Light World through the aid of the Magic Mirror, given to him by a lost old man for guiding him to through a cave. The Magic Mirror transports Link from the Dark World into the Light World.

The Dark World of A Link to the Past is referred to as a Yami no Sekai, and thus, is not necessarily a Makai. However, Ganon is a Maou in the game, and he clearly has rule over the Dark World, so it matches the description of a Makai.
The first alternate dimension to appear in the series was the Dark World, a warped version of Hyrule with changed environments. Dungeons in this world were also different. A Dark World or Realm of Hyrule has been referred to in other titles; Four Swords Adventures also contains another Dark World to explore, though very different from the one shown in ‘’A Link to the Past’’.

In the game's ending, Link defeats Ganon and approaches the Triforce. The Triforce tells Link that Ganon's defeat will cause the Dark World to vanish.

Ocarina of Time
In Ocarina of Time, Ganondorf tricks Link into opening up the entrance to the Sacred Realm by opening the Door of Time and pulling the Master Sword from its pedestal. This causes Link to be sealed inside the Chamber of Sages until he is old enough to wield the Master Sword, and allows Ganondorf to enter the Sacred Realm.

As Princess Zelda later tells Link, when Ganondorf entered the Sacred Realm and touched the Triforce, he became an "Evil King", and the Sacred Realm became a "World of Evil". Here, the Japanese version actually calls Ganondorf a Maou, and the World of Evil a Makai. Rauru gives a similar account of the event. However, after Ganondorf transforms into Ganon, and is defeated by Link, Zelda calls for the other Sages to seal him in the corrupted Sacred Realm, and refers to it as the Yami no Sekai. Thus, though the two phrases have different meanings, they are interchangeable to an extent.

Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages
The Dark World is given only a minor mention in the Game Boy Color game Oracle of Seasons, when the main antagonist, Onox, reveals that he was summoned from the Dark Realm by none other than Twinrova. As with A Link to the Past, the term used here is Yami no Sekai.

Oracle of Ages English translation states that Veran has extended the reach of the Dark Realm; however, that was a mistranslation. The term used there is not "Yami no Sekai", but conversely, "Sekai no Yami". Thus, Veran only extended the "darkness of the world", and not the actual Dark World.

Four Swords Adventures
The Dark World exists in two different forms in Four Swords Adventures. The first is a tainted, parallel world to Hyrule, and the second is its extension into Hyrule.
The Dark World of Four Swords Adventures is can be accessed and exited via Moon Gates, which Link can see because he holds the Four Sword, which also allows him to see inhabitants of the Dark World as shadows. While Link usually enters the Dark World through Moon Gates, he can also be force into it by a Floormaster. In the Village of the Blue Maiden, many children have been taken to it by “a dark shadow”. Through a Moon Gate, the Dark World appears hazy, and the shadows seen in the Light World now appear as physical objects; the music is even an eerier version of the current area’s theme. While the Dark World looks much like the normal world, many objects and buildings are moved around. This sometimes allows for Link to travel to places in the Light World that he could not reach without Moon Gates. While in the Dark, Link can lift his counterparts in the Light World and move them across gaps, which can be done to reach new areas and solve puzzles.

Though its parallel existence to Hyrule is similar to the Dark World of A Link to the Past, the two differ in several ways. The Dark World of Four Swords Adventures is accessed by Moon Gates, most of which need to be activated by Moon Pearls, whereas in A Link to the Past, the Dark World is accessed by blue portals, and can only be exited by the use of the Magic Mirror, an item absent from Four Swords Adventures. Moon Pearls are used in both, but for different purposes.
There is also an area in northwestern Hyrule called the Dark World, though it is different from the one entered via Moon Gates. This area contains the Lost Woods, Kakariko Village, and the Temple of Darkness. In search of the Dark Mirror, Link ventures here, where a cloud of darkness has covered Hyrule.

A Link to the Past comic
Both forms of the Dark World in Four Swords Adventures are referred to as Makai and Yami no Sekai interchangeablly.

Twilight Princess
Theory
It is debated between fans of whether or not the Dark World is the Twilight Realm from Twilight Princess.

The Dark World and the Twilight Realm are both parallel worlds connected to Hyrule. Link can acces to those realms by using mirrors (the Magic Mirror, the Dark Mirror, and the Mirror of Twilight). The Dark Mirror and the Mirror of Twilight are two round mirrors with a golden frame that served to seal away a Dark Tribe in the ancient days. There is also some similarity in the animal form transformations that Link has in Link to the Past and Twilight Princess when he enters those realms - in the Nintendo Power comic pased on Link to the Past, Link is shown to transform into a wolf-like beast instead of the rabbit seen in-game. There is an interesting allusion in Twilight Princess, where Shadow Links make a cameo appearance as members of the Dark Interlopers in Lanayru's surreal tale of them. In Four Swords Adventures, the Dark Mirror was used to spawn the Shadow Links.

Though, the Twilight Realm is never referred to as a Makai or a Yami no Sekai, so its potential status as a Ganon's Dark World is unconfirmed. The Twili reside in the Twilight Realm after being banished by the Goddesses because of their attempt to claim the Triforce. Since the Triforce resided in the Sacred Realm, later known as the Dark World under Ganon, the Goddesses would not have banished the Twili (Dark Interlopers) to a place where they would be present eternally with an object they were attempting to steal.

Even the world’s inhabitants are warped, due to Ganon’s power over the Triforce. People have turned into monsters like Moblins or Hinox, anthropomorphic animals like foxes or frogs, unidentifiable creatures, and even trees.[1] Even other creatures from the Light World, like Cuccos, take on more sinister forms here. The form that living things take in the Dark World is a reflection of what is inside their hearts and minds. When Link first enters the Dark World through a Portal on Death Mountain, he is transformed into a helpless rabbit, perhaps an indication of his pure nature.[2] However, if Link obtains a Moon Pearl from the Tower of Hera, he can keep his true form even in the Dark World.[3]

Around Hyrule, there are many magical transporters that lead to the Dark World, but entering these portals is normally a one way trip. Hearing legends of Golden Power, many people sought after it and became trapped in the Dark World.[4][5] While most are trapped in the Dark World, Link can return to the Light World through the aid of the Magic Mirror, given to him by a lost old man for guiding him to through a cave. The Magic Mirror transports Link from the Dark World into the Light World.[6] After using the mirror, it leaves behind a portal in the Light World so Link can return to where he left the Dark World.

History

In the event that the Hero of Time failed to defeat Ganondorf after he obtained Triforce of Power, the evil king stole the Triforce#Triforce of Courage from Link and the Triforce of Wisdom from Princess Zelda#Ocarina of Time. When Ganondorf obtained the complete Triforce, he became Ganon, King of Evil, and Princess Zelda was forced to unite Hyrule’s citizens to seal Ganondorf inside the Sacred Realm.[8] Several years later, the seal on the Sacred Realm weakened, and many who had heard legends of the Triforce sought out the "Golden Land" and disappear inside it. With the power of the Triforce, Ganondorf transformed the Sacred Realm into the Dark World.[9] In response to the impending threatened, the seven sages, as ordered by the King of Hyrule, began to seal the Dark World. To stop the sages in casting their seal, many monsters rushed forth from the Dark World's entrance, but Hyrule's bravest knights fought to protect the sages, many of them dying in the battle. They had bought enough time for the seven sages to successfully seal the Dark World, and that seal held for many ages. The battle became known as the Imprisoning War.[10] Many years later, the wizard Agahnim began capturing maidens, who were the descendants of the seven sages.[11] One bye one, he sent them to the Dark World and used their power to weaken the seven sages' seal. Before he could send Princess Zelda#A Link to the Past, the final maiden, to the Dark World, she telepathically pleas to Link, who manages to rescue her from Hyrule Castle's dungeon, but it is only a matter of time before she is recaptured by Agahnim. Link rushes her to Hyrule Castle to save her again, but he instead witnesses Agahnim casting a spell as he send Zelda into the Dark World, finally breaking the seven sages'.[12][13] Link confronts the Wizard, but before he could deal the final blow, Agahnim pulls Link into the Dark World.[14] Now in the Dark World, atop the Pyramid of Power, Link is telepathically contacted by Sahasrahla, the Kakariko Village elder, who informs Link of the connection between the Dark and Light worlds at the Hyrule Castle gate.[15] Sahasrahla also prompts Link to save the seven maidens, as their powers can help stop Agahnim.[16] Through saving the maidens and hearing their knowledge, Link learns that Agahnim’s true intent was to free Ganondorf, now known as Ganon the King of Evil, from the Dark World.[17] After saving Zelda from Turtle Rock, Link confronts Agahnim at Ganon's Tower and defeats the wizard for the last time. Ganon’s shadow is seen leaving Agahnim’s body, and it escapes to the Pyramid of Power. Link confronts Ganon at the Pyramid of Power. After a long battle, Link defeats him. He then takes the Triforce and makes a wish on it to restore the Light World.

It was created as a result Ganondorf obtaining the three pieces of the Triforce but being subdued and sealed away in the Sacred Realm by the seven Sages. This event is referred to as the Imprisoning War. Essentially, the Dark World is the Sacred Realm, warped by Ganondorf’s power over the Triforce, making it his dominion.

Before Link’s journey in ‘’A Link to the Past’’ begins, an evil wizard named Agahnim had captured seven Maidens, who are descendants of the Sages who sealed the Sacred Realm. He planned to send the maidens to the Dark World, use their powers to break the Sages’ seal, and connect the Dark World to the Light World. Princess Zelda, one of the seven maidens, contacts Link telepathically to beg him to save her. Link does so, but it is only a matter of time before Agahnim recaptures Zelda and teleports her to the Dark World to finally break the seal. Link confronts the wizard, and after besting Agahnim in battle, Link is drawn into the Dark World. He is then prompted by Sahasrahla, a descendant of the Sages, to rescue the seven maidens. With their power, Link could defeat Agahnim for good. Through saving the Maidens, Link learns Agahnim’s true intent: to free Ganondorf, now known as Ganon the King of Evil, from the Dark World. It is only by defeating Ganon that Link can claim Triforce and restore the Sacred Realm and the Light World.

Four Swords Adventures

The Dark World in Four Swords Adventures

The Dark World of Four Swords Adventures is can be accessed and exited via Moon Gates, which Link can see because he holds the Four Sword, which also allows him to see inhabitants of the Dark World as shadows.[18] Many Moon Gates require a Moon Pearl to be activated.[19][20] While Link usually enters the Dark World through Moon Gates, he can also be force into it by a Floormaster. In the Village of the Blue Maiden, many children have been taken to it by “a dark shadow”.[21][22] Through a Moon Gate, the Dark World appears hazy, and the shadows seen in the Light World now appear as physical objects; the music is even an eerier version of the current area’s theme. While the Dark World looks much like the normal world, many objects and buildings are moved around.[23] This sometimes allows for Link to travel to places in the Light World that he could not reach without Moon Gates. While in the Dark, Link can lift his counterparts in the Light World and move them across gaps, which can be done to reach new areas and solve puzzles.[24]

There is also an area in northwestern Hyrule called the Dark World, though it is different from the one entered via Moon Gates. This area contains the Lost Woods, Kakariko Village, and the Temple of Darkness. In search of the Dark Mirror, Link ventures here, where a cloud of darkness has covered Hyrule.[25] It turned the [Lost Woods, once called the Forest of Light, into a dark place inhabited by fell creatures.[26] While it is originally thought that this darkness was spread by Vaati and Shadow Link, who have been running rampant all over Hyrule, it is soon learned from Deku Scrubs in the forest that Ganon is its true source.[27][28] When Link leaves the Lost Woods and travels to Kakariko Village, he finds that the town, and even many of its citizens, has been corrupted by the darkness. It can be assumed that the same would happen to the rest of Hyrule if Link does not save it.[29] After aiding Kakariko Village, Link travels goes to the Temple of Darkness, where the Dark Mirror was hidden to keep it away from the rest of the world.[30] After he clears the Temple of Darkness, he finds that the Dark Mirror has been taken, and it is the likely source of the many Shadow Links.[31]

At the end of each stage is a barrier that can be broken if the four Links have obtained a certain amount of Force Gems. These barriers drain the Force from Hyrule, and if not destroyed, they would eventually transform all of Hyrule into the Dark World, because they are connected to it.[32]

A Link to the Past comic

Link is transported to the Dark World

In the A Link to the Past comic, the events of the Dark World are heavily abridged: Skull Woods and Thieves' Town are entirely removed, and Link only saves two Maidens before rescuing Princess Zelda in Turtle Rock. Though Link enters Misery Mire and the Ice Palace (referred to as the Ice Tower), no maidens are imprisoned there. Link cannot travel freely between worlds and is trapped in the Dark World once Agahnim transports him there. Moreover, the young hero maintains his form in the Dark World by controlling his emotions, while in the game the Moon Pearl is needed to maintain human form.

After failing to save Princess Zelda from Agahnim's clutches, Link kills Agahnim by deflecting his own magic, but Agahnim, with his final breath, manages to transport Link into the Dark World.[33] Instead of turning into a rabbit when he stumbles into the Dark World like in the game, Link momentarily turns into a beast before suppressing his negative emotions and managing to stay in his human form.[34] He then resumes his search for the princess,[35] and befriends Epheremelda the fairy after rescuing her from monsters.[36]

Helping Link out as a guide, Link and his fairy companion successfully free two Maidens from their crystals, with one of them revealing to Link that Zelda is imprisoned inside a rock that looks like a turtle.[37] Link, with the help of Roam, a knight who is searching for the Silver Arrow in the Dark World, shows up and aids the young hero in defeating the monster in Turtle Rock.[38] With Zelda now saved, the trio head to Ganon's Tower, where Ganon rises from the defeated body of an Agahnim specter. Link stuns the beast with the Master Sword,[39] allowing Zelda to fire a Silver Arrow from Roam's crossbow and defeat Ganon. The Triforce rises from Ganon's body and asks Link to touch it with one wish in his heart as its new master.[40] The Triforce transports them back to the now-peaceful Hyrule, with the Dark World vanishing and releasing all of the people who had been trapped there.[41]
