The cucco features in many Zelda games, from A Link to the Past to Majora's Mask. They are white chickens which peck delightfully and flutter around without a care in the world. When provoked or attacked with a sword (or any weapon, for that matter), they will screech and summon more cuccos to attack you; they can even kill you if you are not careful. This is sometimes known as the Cucco's Revenge Squad. While carrying a cucco, Link can jump and use the cucco to glide. This technique is known as Chicken Gliding.

Interestingly enough, cuccos are an extinct species of birds that were considered a delicacy in ancient Babylon. Cuccos appeared much like a conventional bird, but look more like chickens in the Legend of Zelda series.

There is also other species of cucoos on Ocarina of Time, like the pocket cucco and the blue cucco. In The Minish Cap if you enter Anju's house (which can be only entered if you are a minish) a younger version of the Cuccos will attack as soon as they see you.

A Link In Time

Cuccos are the first "keys to the sky" in the Zelda series. They are most likely the beginning of all the concepts that revolve around the sky, wind, flying, and the Ooccoo. The Zelda series takes us to many places in the sky; but they all got their start with the Cucco.
