Blue Hinoxes are recurring Bosses and Sub-Bosses in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2][3][name references needed]

Characteristics

Link's Awakening

Blue Hinoxes make their first appearance as a mini boss in Turtle Rock and act the same as other Hinoxes in the game, right down to requiring 2 Bombs to defeat. It is not the dungeon's "true" mini-boss however, as it will respawn when Link leaves and later re-enters the room. Once Link obtains the Magic Rod, he can make short work of it, like many other enemies in the game.

Description
The largest monster to make its home in Hyrule, the Hinox lives primarily in forested areas. A keen awareness of your surroundings is paramount when facing one, as Hinox are known for tearing entire trees from the ground and using them as weapons. Blue Hinox wear greaves that can be burnt away to expose their feet. A deft hand can steal weapons off the necklaces they wear.

In Breath of the Wild, Blue Hinoxes are a stronger variation of the regular Hinox found in Hyrule Field and the Lanayru Great Spring. They spend most of their time asleep, but if Link disturbs one, it will wake up and begin to attack him.[4] Unlike regular Hinox, they wear wooden greaves, though they can easily be burned away with flame-based weaponry.[5] As is the case with all Hinox, they are vulnerable to damage to their eyes. When defeated, Blue Hinox drop Hinox Toenails, Hinox Teeth, Hinox Guts, and a variety of Roasted seafood.

Several quests involve encounters with Blue Hinox. "The Three Giant Brothers" Shrine Quest has three Hinox on Mount Taran guarding Ancient Orbs that must be used to unlock the Tawa Jinn Shrine.[6] Of these Hinox, the Hinox (Middle Kin), which can be found in Uten Marsh, is a Blue Hinox.[7] The "Shrouded Shrine" Quest similarly requires Link to obtain the Orb carried by a Blue Hinox in the Thyphlo Ruins, which is used to unlock the Ketoh Wawai Shrine that lies behind the Hinox itself.[8] The "Stranded on Eventide" Quest also requires Link to take an Ancient Orb from the Blue Hinox on Eventide Island, which is used to unlock the Korgu Chideh Shrine.[9] Lastly, after freeing Zora's Domain from Divine Beast Vah Ruta, Torfeau can grant "The Giant of Ralis Pond" Side Quest, which requires Link to defeat the Blue Hinox at Ralis Pond.[10]

Once Link defeats Calamity Ganon for the first time, he is able to ask Kilton at the Fang and Bone about Hinoxes.[11] If Link does so, Kilton asks him to defeat all Hinoxes in Hyrule so he can examine their scent. This count includes all Blue Hinoxes. When Link returns to Kilton after completing his request, he will receive the Medal of Honor: Hinox as a reward. Kilton's research allows him to discover the dietary preferences of each type of Hinox.[12]
