"The Hero's Sword" is a Main Quest in Breath of the Wild.[1]

Overview

After traversing the Lost Woods, Link will arrive in the Korok Forest. There he will find a pedestal, upon which rests the Master Sword. If he attempts to pull the sword, he will hear the voice of Zelda saying he is the final hope of Hyrule, overlaid with flashbacks from several Recovered Memories.[2]

Link draws back from the Master Sword, which awakens Great Deku Tree.[3] He recognizes Link and admonishes him for taking so long to return.[4] After a century, his patience has been tested by waiting for Link.[5]

Great Deku Tree realizes that Link does not remember him.[6] He explains that he has watched over Hyrule for a very long time,[7] and that the Weapon in front of him is the Master Sword, crafted by the Goddess Hylia that only the chosen knight can wield against Calamity Ganon.[8] 100 years ago, Link himself carried that Sword,[9] though in order to wield it again, the Master Sword will test him.[10]

In Link's current state, Great Deku Tree is unsure whether or not he is worthy of the blade,[11] and if he were to try to draw it in a weakened state, he would lose his life.[12] He wishes Link luck.[13] To pull the Master Sword, Great Deku Tree says Link will need to use his true strength,[14] and so he challenges Link to test his worth.[15] With this, the Main Quest begins.

If Link does not have enough Hearts to pull the Master Sword, Great Deku Tree will stop him once he only has a quarter of a Heart left,[16] as continuing any further would have killed him.[17] He encourages Link to prepare before his next attempt, since he will not have him stop next time.[18] True to his word, the next time Link tries to pull the Master Sword without enough Hearts, he will receive a Game Over.

Link needs at least 13 Hearts in order to successfuly draw the Master Sword. Once he does so, he raises it towards the sky, which begins "The Master Sword" Recovered Memory. After Link practices swinging the Sword, Great Deku Tree explains that the Memory he witnessed ocurred in the Korok Forest 100 years ago.[19] Zelda decided to bring the Master Sword to the Forest to keep it safe after Link collapsed.[20] Now, she is trapped fighting Calamity Ganon inside Hyrule Castle,[21] hoping for Link's return.[22] Great Deku Tree likens her smile to the sun, and he would like to see it once again.[23]

Great Deku Tree explains that the Master Sword will glow with a holy light when used against Calamity Ganon or his Malice.[24] Though this is the true power of the Sword, it can become exhausted from extended use.[25] In this scenario, Link will have to wait for the Master Sword to recover.[26] Great Deku Tree reminds Link to use the Master Sword with care and wield it bravely,[27] which completes the Main Quest.
