"EX Trial of the Sword" is a Side Quest in Breath of the Wild.[1] It is exclusive to The Master Trials DLC Pack.

Overview

To activate this Side Quest, Link must have already pulled the Master Sword from its Pedestal. The overworld of Hyrule Kingdom must also be reloaded, which can be done by Warping, reloading a save file, dying, or leaving an Ancient Shrine. Once this is done, Link will hear the voice of a Sheikah Monk call out to him.[2][note 1] The Monk tells him that the time has come to test his courage,[3] and he is instructed to return to the Korok Forest.[4] Once he is there, he should listen to the words of the Great Deku Tree, at which point he will receive a trial.[5]

Upon approaching the Pedestal of the Master Sword, the Great Deku Tree will speak to Link and remark that the time has come.[6] In sharing the details of the upcoming trial, he reveals that the Master Sword has not yet realized its true power.[7] Through the Sword Monk's Shrine, Link can prove his worthiness of such power, though it will be a challenge unlike any he has faced before.[8] Once Link begins the trial, all of his Weapons and Armor will be taken away, and he will be forced to fight enemies without them.[9] After proving himself, Link will be able to call the Master Sword his own.[10]

Based on Link's appearance, the Great Deku Tree believes he is ready to take on the Sword Monk's Shrine.[11] He instructs Link to place the Master Sword back into its Pedestal to begin the trial.[12]

The Sword Monk's Shrine is divided into three levels: the Beginning Trials, the Middle Trials, and the Final Trials. All three are separate from each other. When Link enters one of the sets, he is greeted by a Monk who presents him with the trial.[13] During the Beginning Trials, the Monk tells him he is not powerful enough to wield the Master Sword's true splendor.[14] To gain it, he must eliminate all obstacles in this trial.[15] Anything he obtains within this realm will be lost once the trial is compelte.[16] Finally, the Monk encourages him to overcome the Sword Monk's Shrine.[17]

Once the Beginning Trials are complete, Link is transported to a room with several Monks. They commend Link for his efforts,[18] allowing him to take back the Master Sword and wield more of its strength.[19]

Once Link takes the Master Sword, he is returned to the Korok Forest. After the Beginning and Middle Trials, the Great Deku Tree takes note of both Link and the Master Sword, saying they look stronger than before.[20] He tells Link to place the Master Sword back in its Pedestal if he wishes for more power.[21]

At the start of the Middle Trials, the Monk greets Link the same, but they tell him that he still needs more power to wield the true splendor of the Master Sword.[22] All other dialogue, including that of the Monks at the end and the Great Deku Tree, remains the same.

The Final Trials also start the same, but this time the Monk tells Link he has almost proven his worth.[23] At the end of the trials, Link is able to approach all seven Monks, who tell him that he has done well.[24] They share that they were the ones who prepared the Sword Monk's Shrine after receiving a vision from Hylia.[25] By overcoming their trial, Link has proven himself worthy of the Master Sword.[26] Now that Link has the power to defeat Calamity Ganon, their duty has been fulfilled.[27] As they fade away, the Monks tell Link to protect Hyrule with the power of the awakened Master Sword.[28]

After drawing the Master Sword, Link is once again transported in front of the Great Deku Tree. When Link holds out the sword, it resonates with him. Great Deku Tree notices his return and recognizes that he is now capable of wielding the Master Sword's full potential.[29] He tells Link that he is now one with the sword and that he will continue to watch over his journey.[30] He believes that Zelda would be pleased with Link's accomplishments.[31] With this, the Side Quest is completed.
