Graveyards are a signature locale in The Legend of Zelda series with at least one appearing in nearly every game.

Appearances and Features

The Legend of Zelda

The Graveyard from Legend of Zelda

In the original The Legend of Zelda, the graveyard is first accessed by correctly navigating through the Lost Woods. It is a bleak, desolate, gray area characterized only by the white tombstones marked with blue crosses. The lone Ghini floating outside is a "ring leader". Slaying that one will slay all others that appear. The strongest sword in the game can be obtained here after Link has twelve Heart Containers in his possession.[1][2]

In the Second Quest, Level 6 can be found beneath a Tombstone.

The Adventure of Link

The graveyard is located in the Western Hyrule portion of The Adventure of Link, near the coast. Among the regular graves, the King's Tomb is also present. A grave a few steps south from the King's tomb holds a secret entrance to the Island Palace.

A smaller, more desolate graveyard can be found just south of Death Mountain, which represents the graveyard from the original Zelda. Another graveyard can be found in Eastern Hyrule, leading to where the Valley of Death is.

A Link to the Past

The Cemetery in A Link to the Past

In A Link to the Past, the graveyard is also known as the Hyrulian Cemetery and is located just east of the Sanctuary in the Light World. Before the first defeat of Agahnim, the graves are patrolled by Soldiers, and when Link pushes some of the graves, Poes will rise from the bones of the dead. Later, after Agahnim has been defeated the first time, Poes will freely haunt the graveyard, possibly as a result of the gateway to the Dark World slowly opening.

A hole can be found under the westernmost grave that leads to part of the Secret Passage. A lone grave surrounded by stones that Link cannot move with the Power Gloves hides a secret tomb that contains the Magic Cape. Link cannot push this grave open by normal means, and must instead use a Dash Bash. Although it appears that Link needs the Titan's Mitt to access this grave, he can instead use the Magic Mirror from the Dark World to reach it earlier.

The cave to the north of the Cemetery cannot be reached without first travelling to the Dark World and using the Magic Mirror. Deep within a Piece of Heart can be found.

Curiously, the Japanese manual mentions the graves or tomb of a "high mountain people" who do not otherwise appear in the game, who are possibly the Gorons. This is seemingly unrelated to the Cemetery next to the Sanctuary.

The Dark World equivilent of the Cemetary is known as the Ghostly Garden.

Link's Awakening

A four-screen graveyard can be found on Koholint Island in Link's Awakening. In each portion, one Ghini floats around and more will appear if Link touches one of the graves. In the southeast portion, zombies will appear in addition to the Ghinis. In the northwest portion, a Giant Ghini can be found. In the DX version, the Color Dungeon can be found in the southwest section.[3] To the north is the Tabahl Wasteland, and to the west is the Koholint Prairie.

Ocarina of Time

Kakariko's graveyard is located on its outskirts, and Link must visit it both as a child and as an adult to obtain various important items from beneath the graves, such as the Hookshot. The Graveyard also contains a inaccessible ledge that leads to the Shadow Temple. The Nocturne of Shadow is required to reach it.

Majora's Mask

Template:Main listThe Ikana Graveyard in Majora's Mask is situated to the left upon entering the road to Ikana Canyon.[4] In it, there are numerous Stalchildren and graves.[5] Dampé also makes another appearance, but this time he seems to be completely terrified of ghosts and spirits.[6] In it, there are numerous Stalchildren and graves.[7][8] Link can enter each of the graves that the Stalchildren are guarding on a specific night; however, Link must only enter one of them in order to progress through the game.

There is also a Goron Graveyard in Snowhead that houses the resting place of the Goron hero Darmani. It is here that Link obtains the Goron Mask.[9]

Oracle of Ages

Template:Main list In Oracle of Ages, the present day eastern Labrynna is home to the Yoll Graveyard, a haunted place filled with many dead trees. Ghosts lurk little outside of Spirit's Grave along with the occasional Ghini.

In the same place as Yoll Graveyard in the past lies the massive Ancient Tomb, a place of mystery. Several strong monsters guard this mysterious place. Who, or what the Ancient Tomb is tomb to has long since been forgotten. The Ancient Tomb hides in its depths the Falling Star, an Essence necessary to Link's quest.

Oracle of Seasons

The Graveyard in Oracle of Seasons is located in the southwest corner of Holodrum. The only access is via a vine growing up the southern cliff face. Beneath the northwestern masonry work lies Level 7: Explorer's Crypt. The cemetery in Subrosia is west of the Pirate's ship.[10]

Four Sword Adventures

Main article: The Swamp

The Graveyard in Four Sword Adventures is found in the The Swamp, Near the Fields. Dampé is once again the graveyard's caretaker.[11] The area is also heavily infested with poes, and here the four Links will encounter the Big Poe.

The Minish Cap

Main article: Royal Valley

The Graveyard in The Minish Cap is called Royal Valley and contains that game's version of the Lost Woods.[12] Here Link finds Dampé, who lets him in to the Royal Crypt of King Gustaf.[13][14]

Twilight Princess

Main articles: Kakariko Village Graveyard and Castle Graveyard

In Twilight Princess, the graveyard is also located behind Kakariko Village. There is also a rather hidden graveyard in Hyrule Castle.

Phantom Hourglass

In Phantom Hourglass there is a small graveyard in the Northwestern part of the Island which was home to nine sages who served under King Mutoh.[15]

Skyward Sword

In Skyward Sword, there is a small graveyard located in Skyloft. The only importance that this graveyard holds is during the Missing Daughter Sidequest, where hitting the gravestone nearest to the tree at night will open the nearby shed door. From there, a ladder leads down to Batreaux's house, where Kukiel can be found to complete the sidequest. After this, the graveyard only serves as a path to Batreaux's house to show him Gratitude Crystals.

During the night, the graveyard—like the rest of Skyloft—is infested by hostile Keese and Chuchus due to Batreaux's curse.

A Link Between Worlds

In this game, the Graveyard is located next to the Template:C, as it was in its predecessor, A Link to the Past. Link visits it early on in the game, after he hears Seres screaming from inside the Sanctuary, whose doors were sealed shut. Dampé tells the young hero of a hidden passageway which he can use to enter the Sanctuary, its entrance being located under one of the gravestones.

Link can also visit the Lorulean equivalent of the Graveyard. Unlike its Hyrulean counterpart, the Lorulean Graveyard is not necessary to visit to complete the game, but it is advised to do so, as there is a hidden passageway that will lead Link to an otherwise inaccessible area of the Lorulean Sanctuary, allowing him to earn a Master Ore, needed to upgrade the Master Sword.
