The Kokiri Forest is a village from Ocarina of Time. It serves as the home of the Kokiri tribe as well as its guardian spirit, the Great Deku Tree.[1] The Kokiri Forest is known to be the source of life, maintaining the order of the world and deterring outsiders from ever entering the so-called forbidden forest.[2][3] The forest serves as Link's hometown.
The village and forest region comprises the central part of the Lost Woods. It is located in the southeastern region of Hyrule, and it is accessed through the Lost Woods by crossing a small bridge. It is said that no Kokiri can ever leave the woods, or they will die.[4] The forest itself is a pleasant village filled with tree-houses. There is a training ground in the northern section of the forest, where it is said the Kokiri Sword lies hidden. There is also a shop which sells Deku Shields, amongst other things.
The Kokiri Forest is actually home to the Great Deku Tree's Meadow and is a safe haven, compared to the rest of the Lost Woods. The entrance into the Lost Woods is found on a cliff overlooking the Kokiri Forest village. It is also through the Lost Woods that the Sacred Forest Meadow can ultimately be reached.
History
It is in this small village that young Link starts his adventure in Ocarina of Time. After venturing inside the Great Deku Tree to save him from Queen Gohma, the Great Deku Tree withered and died. Seven years later, upon retrieving the Master Sword from its pedestal, Link returns to the once-peaceful village to find the forest overrun by monsters such as Deku Babas, Mad Scrubs, and Skulltulas, among others. Fearing the monsters, all the Kokiri have taken refuge inside their homes. They mention that, ever since the Great Deku Tree died, monsters have begun to appear all over the forest.[5] Link then goes to the Forest Temple to defeat Phantom Ganon in order to break the curse on the temple and awaken Saria as the Sage of the Forest. By doing so, the Deku Tree Sprout is born and the Kokiri Forest returns to normal.

Theory
The Kokiri Forest is Link's original hometown. Although he isn't a Kokiri, it was where he grew up and is home to his closest friends. By looking at the map in Twilight Princess, Ordon Village seems to be built in the Kokiri village area, though no remains of the Kokiri are seen, with exception of Link's tree home.
Trivia
- One aspect that makes Kokiri Forest (as well as the Lost Woods) unique is the strange particles that float in the air. If Link stays still for a certain length of time, these particles will join together in a single file and move through the air in a fashion similar to Moldorm. When Link Moves, however, they burst into individual particles again.
- If Link is Fifteen (or more) steps away from a Kokiri, the kokiri will no longer be visible. At this distance, most other characters can easily be seen.
