ZW Firefox Search Plugin

After having major luck putting together a working Firefox search plugin for VGRC, I was messing around and realized that if Wikipedia has one, then why not Zelda Wiki? I've got one together somewhat (hobbled together from the Wikipedia search plugin and the VGRC plugin I made) and testing reveals that it works, but I need a copy of the ZW favicon in 16x16 png format. Deletion requests

Hi, I was wondering if you could delete Category:Creatures and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for me. Ocarina so I can move the article there to match up with the rest of the games articles, unless you feel like doing that yourself.
Also, the Category links on the Main Page can be done by typing the same as you would to categorise that page but then putting a : in front, like this:

[[:Category:Zelda]]

I was wondering if you would think it useful to have a category of pages for deletion so any pages someone thinks should be deleted could just be placed in there, or perhaps a general messageboard where people could leave requests for mod help, or just comments or requests for help from other users. We could also perhaps create something similar to one of wikipedia's deletion templates (and by create, I mean modify the code of one of wikipedia's).

Oh and also, if the disambiguation template is put in the disambiguation category, any pages using it will be put in the category to without putting the tag in the page. I'd make the change myself but the disambig template is locked. It probably won't make that much difference if we were to do it that way instead, but I thought I'd tell you. I'm getting little errors at the top of each screen that distort the whole of the wiki's appearance, which I believe to be caused either by the extension or the variable I enabled after installing it. Are you also seeing this? If so, I would like to try disabling that variable and see if it solves the problem. --Jase 20:36, 8 October 2006 (CDT)

Yeah I'm getting them too. I've posted a help request to the MediaWiki support desk but in the meantime it's probably best to just change it back to false. Hopefully there will be a way to fix it properly but if there isn't I think I can get the template working another way; it's just going to make the code harder to read, but that shouldn't be a major problem as it shouldn't be edited that often. — Ian Moody ^(talk) 04:19, 9 October 2006 (CDT)

Hey, I'm new

Hi. I'm Dinoshaur, and I was wondering about this wiki. I've a few questions/requests.

• Why are there so many pages that have nothing to do with Zelda? (e.g. Chrono Trigger, English etc.)
• Could we change the colour scheme? For one, the odd font colours and background are little painful on the eyes.
• Could we move some of the projects (Like the Firefox plugins) on to the wiki namespace? If we changed it to Zelda Wiki.org:ZW.org Search Plugin and got a page for stuff like that (and possibly a category for them) it'd be more organised.

Hey there. I'll address your requests one by one...

1.) This is probably one of the most asked questions. On top of offering a ton of Zelda info, we don't object to pages about Nintendo in general. While it's not the main focus, there is a category for "Nintendo," and there's nothing wrong with it, considering that the Zelda franchise spans far beyond just the games themselves. As for the nonsense articles like "English," they go into a category which was made for random, miscellaneous articles. Occasionally we get people who object to its existence, but generally people don't mind having a small category where random, fun articles can be created.

2.) I just redid the layout to look like what you don't like. And it was one heck of a job. Most people don't have a problem with it, so unless I get confronted by a hundred people I think I'll leave the layout as-is. ;) (Oh, and if you're really seeing ODD colors, let me know - I see dark blue and subtle grey-white, which is definitely not hard on my eyes.)

3.) That's a good idea, actually. I'll move it there.

• Could we add a "signatures" to preferences? There's a subst lock on it, so we need to get around that. It makes putting posts on talk pages so much more pretty. If you need the code, I could fish it out for you.
• Could we add a {{tobedeleted}} code? If we slap it on a bad or unwanted page, it could alert you or other admins to the page in mind.
• Is their other administrators other than yourself? Could I see a list so I know who to go to if there's a problem?

1.) I thought that already was an option. If it's locked, I didn't know about it. Any idea how to unlock it? ;)

2.) Sure. Again, feel free to make the template (or any others you wish to make). Make sure that the template puts the corresponding articles in the "Articles for Deletion" category.

3.) There are MANY more administrators. In fact, they come from every website that manages this Wiki. While I'm the most active, they are not nonexistent, since they, too, work on the wiki. I do know that some of them might be gone for the holidays or are currently visiting relatives, so they might not respond to you. (I'm Jewish - my holiday ends tonight, and my present was the Wii.) 4.) No, I'm pretty sure we don't. Though, it would be helpful. ;)

Abbreviations

Deletion of Pages

Hey, Jason, I just proposed a deletion of the page 1987 probably completely naively. See, I assumed that I could go to a deletion page here and tell an admin to delete it, but there doesn't seem to be anything like that here. Can you propose deletion on ZeldaWiki? If so, would anybody here know how to respond and vote? Has a page been proposed for deletion before? Is there a no deletion policy? I copied Wikipedia's deletion template's text onto 1987’s page because it wouldn't recognize the template. Please respond with any advice, including who would physically delete the page if that was the verdict. SeanMD80 16:15, 26 January 2007 (CST)

This wiki isn't as large as Wikipedia, and there are not enough active members of staff to successfully complete an entire debate about whether to delete a single page. Moreover, most pages that need deletion are obvious candidates for deletion, they just need to be found. Such is the case with 1987. Our current system is to move it into the category "Articles for Deletion", and then any sysop will have a look at it in there and do what they please with it. I suppose it wouldn't kill a person to put a reason in the talk page as to why they moved it into Articles for Deletion, but beside that, there is no real deletion system, not unless the wiki grows to abnormally large proportions like Wikipedia.

Also, keep in mind that templates don't come with MediaWiki. The templates you see in Wikipedia have been made by the userbase and staff of Wikipedia, not by the MediaWiki developers themselves. Most templates you would like to use probably do not exist because this wiki has not yet found a use for them, such as the deletion template. --Jase 17:08, 26 January 2007 (CST)

Templates

I noticed that you deleted a few of the templates ive made. at first i was a little angry, comsidering it took alot of work, but i can understand why you got rid of them. For instance, the islands template was huge and most of the arrticles didnt exist or were stubs. The enemies Template just lists some of the enemies that have been seen in a lot of the games, so i brought that one back. Sure, and I apologize for deleting them without telling you first - that was totally wrong of me. However, in my absolutely lame defense, I had just gotten home from vacation and didn't want to wait to get rid of weird, bulky templates... ;) Anyways, I don't mind the Enemies one as long as it's nice and compact the way it is, and expresses the most commonly seen enemies. That fine. You shouldnt be worried about just anyone making navigation templates though, they take alot more work to make then to get rid of. Navigation templates are very important, and are very helpful. when i joined this wiki it didnt have any and that was the onl reason this wiki wasnt as good as the other i'd found. It took a while, but i figured out how to make them, and i added them, and i think it's alot better now. I want to work on categorizing things better now, so ill try and find a better way.

Wow, i was just on the other, less good zelda wiki [[2]], i saw that they had already uploaded pictures that i put on this wiki just 2 days ago. I was very lucky to find such awesome ganondorf art. but its ovious they took it off this wiki because it still has the same crazy filename ive given it. this goes for quite a few pictures. Also the Epona pages are almost exactly the same. On the legend of zelda series wiki page, there is a message that says that the other wiki should be the only one listed and no other Zelda wiki should be added. I dont know if this is a big deal or not, but it just kinda buggs me that their just stealing what we have. Suggestion

I started looking into the templates and realised that there are a lot more than I actually knew about; some are very useful. It made me wonder, would it be possible to create a page displaying all of the available templates (something like this) so that everyone could see what templates are available for use? I realise that we already have Categories for Navigation Templates (which, as discussed above and I agree, is sufficient as it stands), and Notice Templates, which doesn't list all of them (missing Template:Stub & Template:Accuracy, and I ended up making a bit of a mess by trying to add one!)

What I think is really missing is a list of the Layout/Formatting templates, such as:

• Template:Infobox Game
• Template:Enemy
• Template:Infobox Boss
• Template:Dungeon
• Template:User
• Template:Infobox CVG

Downtime

First of all, great to see the wiki back alive and well, and with all recent edits in-tact; well done! I have found a slight problem though: Special:Newimages all but one of the recent image uploads seem to be corrupted (unless it's just a problem with my browser), so I guess new versions will need to be uploaded...

Vandalism

Am I the only one who's noticed that the level of vandalism has suddenly drastically increased? I'm starting to get pretty sick of undoing "deleted all content", and removing huge blocks of spam weblinks. We really need to get some of these users banned straight away (in accordance with the wiki's Quality Standards). Sorry to keep bugging you, just noticed that the Spam Blacklist doesn't seem to have stopped the linkspam (and clearly banning individual IPs has no real effect, makes me feel better though :). It seems there may be other, more effective methods, although they are somewhat more intrusive. I've seen something like this used on another wiki so that, basically whenever you try to save an edit which contains an external link, you have to do one of those "type what is shown in this image" things. As long as the spam is automated (which most of it seems to be), that would work, and would only impact on very few genuine edits. Another, more drastic possibility would be blocking all IP edits, forcing everyone to log in. Although that might encourage spam user-registartions, which would be an even bigger problem! I was trying to avoid using a captcha, mostly because I hate them do death and find them annoying. However, all my efforts to make the SpamBlacklist work have failed - I can't figure out WHY it isn't working, and I'd like to know. However, a captcha would solve all of our issues. I know, I hate them too (mostly because I'm usually too dumb to read them correctly!) But I think given the very small amount of edits where users are genuinely adding an external link, the level of intrusion will be minimal (compared to the effect of the spam itself.) Just as soon as one problem is solved, another appears!! I'm sure you've seen the new type of vandalism that's become prevalent, like this. It seems like the same automatic IP-only edits as before, except instead of adding links, they are just insering random nonsense at the start of pages (which bypasses the captcha). It started a few weeks ago with one or two a day, and has steadily grown. I'm starting to see the same patterns emerging, like the same pages (particularly talk pages) being repeatedly targeted. I guess the next step might be to ban edits from users who aren't logged in? I'm really concerned though that doing that might just cause things to escalate further (like prompting fake user registrations). Disappearing edits

It seems somehow that nearly all edits made in the last 6 hours gave disappeared. After this edit:

everything that myself and others did seems to not have been saved. I was reviewing the recent changes and saw that 42bens had completed the Ring Appendix by creating all of the Wanted Pages. At the same time I uploaded a number of images and categorized the uncategorized pages. In their place are just a few edits which I don't recall being there originally. While the edits can be re-done, it's somewhat worrying that data has just vanished, without there having even been any noticeable coinciding downtime. --Adam 16:44, 4 July 2007 (PDT)

We were shifted servers, actually. That would explain the loss of content. You see, the server we were on was getting full (it's a shared host), and thus the hosting company, who rawks, decided they wanted to move us to a server that's empty so that the site can run fast. For free. :D

'Bad' Pages

I have recently noticed that there have been many articles made by random IPs that are just bad. Bad as in are nothing at all. Is there a way that these can be deleted or something so that they don't clutter the site? A few recent examples would be everything done by Boughtadog or 190.50.132.89 recently, Majora's Wrath, or Fresh Prince. I expect that you probably already do some sort of check on all new pages, but my gosh the fact that anyone would vandalize like that is just outrageous. As far as I can see, all of the usernames involved in the attack on the wiki have been blocked now, including separate IP blocks. Unfortunately all of the damage has to be undone manually (unless anyone here knows anything about creating/using bots?). I've deleted all of the new pages created recently which were just spam, and as far as I can tell the vandalism to existing articles has now all been reverted (thank you for all your hard work!) --Adam 23:09, 31 July 2007 (PDT)

Image problems

Hi. Any progress with the image thing yet? As far as I can tell, it seems to affect everything uploaded after the 22nd. These new images can be increased in size, but none of them can be thumbnailed or reduced in size in any way, and none of the images older than the 22nd seem to be affected. I uploaded a smaller version of the logo onto the main page to fix it, 'cos that was annoying me. Also, saying that none of the older images are affected, I came across one which I uploaded in March where the thumbnail still works, but opening the full image gives an error. First of all, thanks for uploading the small logo version - I had just made one and was going to upload it, but it turns out you already had done it. Second, I don't get an error when I click on that image link to view the full image. It seems the problem only persists when creating a thumbnail of abnormal size (anything other than 180px default). Is it possible to embed a YouTube video into an article? They've done it at The Final Fantasy Wiki, using the <youtube> tag, which doesn't work within ZW. Might be a nice feature to be able to include a select few gameplay clips in certain articles. --Adam 16:18, 9 August 2007 (PDT)

Is that a polite way of trying to tell me to bugger off? .... just joking ;) I hear what you're saying, and I've asked myself the same thing. But to be honest, editing ZW has replaced some other stuff to become my main leisure activity. I used to spend quite a few (read too many) hours a day playing games (and not just Zelda :)) or just watching TV, so I guess I feel that now I'm at least spending my time doing something constructive (even if I do miss one or two shows!) However, I'm slightly worried by the fact that I still have well over 300 images on my HDD to potentially be uploaded. Actually, that's why I've been less active. I'm current doing something involving ZU that's taking up a lot of time, but I should be all done with it after the weekend, latest being next week. Error/Glitch

Hi, seems we have a problem. I don't know if any changes to the wiki have been made recently, but now it seems some/all of the infobox templates are faulty; see our featured article ZeldaInformer for example! I know this wasn't happening previously. Another user has identified this here, and affected a temporary fix on some of the templates (e.g Template:Boss), but obviously the root issue needs to be addressed. OK. But by taking that out, it means that empty boxes don't collapse like they used to, but appear empty: Freshly Picked - Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland. It used to be that you could use the Enemy template and the only mandatory fields were Game and Effective Weapon, but now Habitat and Spoils appear on all enemy pages. --Adam 04:37, 25 August 2007 (PDT)

I'm fine with it. I was going to do a similar change, a little neater. I'll do that later, though - this change suffices for now. What I will do eventually, however, is just take the circle with the heart in it and make it the background of the text. Obviously, I'd lower the opacity, but it would serve to identify the area as a Heart Container area, and the Pieces of Heart area the same.

Problems!

When I am trying to open a page that is not made to make a userbox, i see this:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was: (SQL query hidden) from within function "Database::select". MySQL returned error "1146: Table 'zeldaw_wiki.wiki_protected_titles' doesn't exist (localhost)".

I have no idea what this means. Also, at the top of the main page, I see about 10 lines that have stuff like this:

Okay, these problems are killing me! I was making changes to my user page, when all of the sudden, I notice that when I leave and come back, there is nothing changed on the user page, yet when I go to the editing box, all the changes are still there! Please help me! It's happening on other peoples user pages too! I can't see my edits or their edits on the talk page unless I click on edit! This is so annoying!
