Shield Surfing,(BotW)[1] also stylized as Shield-Surfing,(BotW)[2] is a recurring ability in The Legend of Zelda series.

Overview

Breath of the Wild

To perform Shield Surfing, Link can jump on any of his Shields and ride down the slopes of Snow-, Sand-, or Grass-covered mountains and hills as though it were a Snowboard. Different Shields have different frictions and speeds, as do different surfaces. Using a Shield this way on rough terrain like the rocks on Death Mountain will drain the Shield's Durability rapidly, so it can break if this technique is overused. However, Shield Surfing on dirt paths or grass does not damage the Shield anywhere near as much,[verification needed] and on Sand and Snow, it doesn't damage the Shield at all. Shield Surfing during Rain further reduces damage done to the Shield and increases speed.

Tears of the Kingdom

It is possible to Shield Surf along Rails by Fusing a Mine Cart onto a Shield. Other items Fused to a shield may outright disable Shield Surfing.
