The Rito Chieftain is a character in The Wind Waker.[2]

Biography

The Rito Chieftain is the leader of the Rito and the father of Komali Link first meets the Rito Chieftain when he travels to Dragon Roost Island to obtain Din's Pearl. The Rito Chieftain had heard of Link's plight through Quill and offers the aid of his people. However, he informs Link that the Rito are currently dealing with their own crisis.[3] Since Valoo, the sky spirit, has unexpectedly grown violent and unpredictable, none of the new Rito can approach him to acquire the scale needed for them to grow wings.[4] This has the potential to harm the tribe,[5] so the Chieftain must attend to this issue before he can assist Link.[6] The Chieftain asks that Link talk to his son and convince him to be brave throughout the crisis and in getting his scale.[7] However, Prince Komali refuses to listen to Link until he has cleared Dragon Roost Cavern.

After obtaining Farore's Pearl, Link receives a Letter from the Rito Chieftain thanking Link for his help. Enclosed with the Letter is a Piece of Heart.

Rito Chieftain's Letter

 Dear Link,

If you are reading this letter, it can only
mean you have peeked into one of our
 many postboxes.

I am indebted to you. I am very sorry I
let you leave without thanking you.
 Please accept my heartfelt apology
 along with my thanks.
We cannot do much to help you, but we
can at least do this: if we get any
letters or parcels for you, we will
deliver them to a postbox near you.
If you see any wiggling postboxes,
 please look inside them.

I suppose you have a long way to go
before your perilous journey is done.
I have included a gift for you with my
letter in the hope that it might help you.
Please accept this small token. I look
forward to the day that we meet again.

 May Fortune Fill Your Wings
                        From Komali's Father
