Items are a recurring mechanic in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2][name references needed]

Overview

Items are anything that is stored within a character's Inventory, often usable multiple times. Items are separate from Objects, which are things that exist outside of Inventories. Items do not necessarily have to be visible within the Inventory to be considered Items.

Some Items may also overlap with characters, enemies, or Objects. For instance, characters such as Child and the Deku Princess, enemies such as Bees and Bomblings, and objects such as Torches also double as Items.

The Legend of Zelda

Five different types of Items are utilized in The Legend of Zelda. Within the Inventory, Link can select and use up to eight Items at any given time. Link also has access to six other items which activate at contextually specific times, such as the Stepladder, which is used whenever Link approaches small gaps. Other Items of this type include the Raft, Book of Magic, Magical Key, and the Power Bracelet.

Link's Inventory also contains a space for the Triforce Shard of the Triforce of Wisdom, which is used in the final battle against Ganon.

The fourth set of Items are those displayed within the HUD. These are Rupees, Keys, and Link's Hearts within the collective Life. Like the second set of Items, these are also used under certain conditions, such as when purchasing other Items or taking damage.

Though they do not appear directly in his Inventory, Link can also obtain other Items such as the Sword, which is automatically equipped to Link.

Items are found on Item Podiums in Four Swords Adventures; several of them are located in each Stage. They store Items for Link to obtain, since he may only hold one Item at once. Once Link takes the currently-stored Item, his previous Item will replace it.

The Minish Cap

There are three main categories of Items in The Minish Cap: traditional Items that Link can use to overcome obstacles in his adventure (appearing in the Items Screen), quest-related Items that are usually delivered or given to other characters to advance the story (appearing on the Quest Status Screen screen), and collectible Items such as Rupees and Kinstone Pieces.

Several Items (the Smith's Sword, Small Shield, Boomerang, Bomb, and Bow) have different variations or upgrades that can be obtained, though most of them are optional and are not required to complete the game.
