Goron City,(OoT | BotW | HWAoC)[1][2][3][4] also known as the Home of the Gorons,(OoT)[5] is a recurring location in The Legend of Zelda series. It is the home of the Goron Tribe.[6] It is located nearby Death Mountain.

Features and Overview

Ocarina of Time

Goron City is the main gateway to Death Mountain Crater which leads to the Fire Temple. There is also a portal to the Lost Woods, but its entrance is blocked by rocks that Link must destroy with Bombs. Paintings of Gorons, Dodongos, and other abstract shapes can be seen all around the city walls. The city consists of four floors, with the entrance on the top floor. The lowest floor has two important points of interest: the Goron Shop and Darunia's chamber, which is initially closed off until Link proves his connection with the Royal Family. Within the chamber is a heavy stone monument blocking off the entrance to Death Mountain Crater. Link can move this obstacle once he is an adult.

Also on the bottom floor is a giant vase which spins once Link lights up all of the city's torches. Situated at the center of the city is a platform suspended by ropes where the Spiritual Stone of Fire, also known as the Goron's Ruby, was once displayed; it used to light up the city before Darunia took it away.[7]

When young Link arrives at Goron City, he finds the source of the Goron's troubles: their source of food, Dodongo's Cavern, has been blocked by a giant boulder thus endangering their lives.[8] Their leader, Darunia, locks himself up in his chamber and won't let anyone in unless they are connected to the Royal Family of Hyrule.[9] Once Link shows his proof of connection with the Royal Family, the door opens, allowing Link to speak to the Goron chief. Darunia, though reluctant at first,[10] lets Link help them by having him destroy the Dodongos in Dodongo's Cavern.[11]

After Link defeats King Dodongo and clears the infested cavern, Darunia gives him the Goron's Ruby and calls him a Sworn Brother.[12]

Seven years later, after retrieving the Master Sword, Link returns to Goron City to find that all of its citizens are gone. He notices a lone Goron rolling around the third floor and stops him with a Bomb. Link discovers the Goron is Darunia's son who informs him about the revival of Volvagia, an ancient Dragon who eats Gorons. Due to this situation, Darunia went to the Fire Temple to try and defeat Volvagia; however, while he was gone, all the Gorons were taken by Ganondorf as prisoners into the temple where they would be fed to Volvagia as a warning to those who might oppose him.[13] Darunia's son pleads for Link to go and save Darunia. So, Darunia's son gives him the Goron Tunic, a tunic which lets Link endure the heat of Death Mountain Crater and the Fire Temple indefinitely, so long as it is worn.[14]

Once Link rescues all the Gorons from the Fire Temple, they will return to the city and thank Link for saving them.[15][16]

The Goron Stone Memorial in Goron City

Goron City is located west of Death Mountain in Eldin Canyon, denoted by the fifth Death Mountain Marker.[17] It consists of a series of rocky buildings, with several bridges providing safe passage over a pool of Lava below the City. The Goron Stone Memorial, which depicts several famous Gorons overlooks Goron City.[18] Goron City's Goddess Statue can be found outside of the Boss's House. The Mountain Road cuts through the City before continuing on to the Abandoned North Mine. The path curves around the Goron Stone Memorial and across Stolock Bridge, which is situated above Goron City.

100 years ago, Goron City was spared any direct damage during the Great Calamity, save for their Champion Daruk's death.[18] Sometime afterwards, Bludo founded the Goron Group Mining Company after noticing the other races of Hyrule would purchase the Gems that the Gorons considered to be useless.[19] In modern times, the Mining Company is the main industry of Goron City, driving the local economy.[19] When Divine Beast Vah Rudania began its rampage, it created eruptions on Death Mountain, resulting in Goron City falling under a Scorching Climate. In order to traverse Goron City without taking damage, Link requires at least one level of Flame Guard. The intense Heat surrounding Goron City has caused the number of visiting Hylian tourists to decrease.[20]

While the "Captured Memories" Main Quest is active, Link is able to encounter Pikango in Goron City. When spoken to, he is able to identify the location of the fifth Picture in Link's Album.[21]

During the "Divine Beast Vah Rudania" Main Quest, Link finds Bludo preparing to drive back the Divine Beast, though he is unable to proceed until Yunobo returns to Goron City with painkillers for his back.[22][23] Even after taking his painkillers, however, Bludo is unable to continue on, so he asks Link to cancel his plans with Yunobo on his behalf.[24] After Link calms Divine Beast Vah Rudania, Bludo will reward him with the Boulder Breaker, which he can take from a Treasure Chest in the Boss's House.[25]

"The Road to Respect" Side Quest and the "A Brother's Roast" Shrine Quest can both be found in Goron City.[26][27] Once the "Divine Beast Vah Rudania" Main Quest has been completed, "The Jewel Trade" Side Quest will also become available.[28]

Due to the dormancy of Death Mountain, Goron City no longer requires flame resistance to access. Additionally, the vast majority of the lava in the area has cooled, making it safe to walk on.

Following the Upheaval, much of Gordon City's population has become addicted to Marbled Rock Roast, crippling business in the city and causing the shopkeepers to raise their prices to outlandish extremes.
