This page lists all appearances of the Triforce outside the canon main series.

Ambiguously Canon Appearances

Game & Watch Zelda

In Template:G&WZ, the eight fierce dragons have kidnapped Princess Zelda and locked her in a prison to which the Triforce is the key. Each dragon guards a different fragment of the Triforce. Link has to reassemble the Triforce and free Princess Zelda.

Non-canon Appearances

The Legend of Zelda TV Series

The Triforce of Wisdom

The Triforce of Wisdom and the Triforce of Power make an appearance in The Legend of Zelda TV series. While the Triforce of Wisdom is kept safely in North Castle guarded by Link and Princess Zelda, the Triforce of Power is in the hands of Ganon, situated in the Underworld. Their appearance is that of glowing, floating tetrahedrons: green for the Triforce of Wisdom and red for the Triforce of Power.

Unlike the games, both the Triforce of Wisdom and the Triforce of Power have the ability to speak, giving the former a female voice and the latter a male voice; however, the Triforce of Power only speaks once in all of the episodes.[1] The Triforce of Wisdom, on the other hand, can be heard talking in more episodes, in which she gives Princess Zelda and Link wise advise in the form of riddles when they are in need of help.[2][3][4][5]

The Triforce of Power

Like in the games, Princess Zelda is the wielder of the Triforce of Wisdom and is knowledgeable in its magic capabilities, often using its magical powers to save Link or herself from dangerous situations.[6] Zelda can only use magic when she has the Triforce of Wisdom with her,[7] which she usually makes it float and seems to be the only one who can do so.[8] Most of each of the episode plots revolve around Ganon trying to steal the Triforce of Wisdom from the princess;[9][10] however, his plans ultimately fail since he is usually defeated by Link and Zelda. In "Underworld Connections", Ganon orders several Vires to bomb the Triforce of Wisdom, which causes it to break into three shards,[11] allowing the Vires to steal two of them. Link and Zelda are then forced to go through the Underworld to retrieve the two Triforce Shards and thus restore the whole Triforce of Wisdom again.

The Triforce of Power gives Ganon an endless supply of magic and power to aid him in his attempts to overthrow the kingdom of Hyrule; without the Triforce of Power, Ganon would be defenseless.[12][13] As such, Princess Zelda is always looking for an opportunity to take it from him. She attempts to do so in two episodes, "That Sinking Feeling" and "The Moblins Are Revolting"; however, she is unable to take it from Ganon's lair in the former since the Underworld was collapsing, and in the latter due to Link's clumsiness.[14]

Captain N: The Game Master

The Triforce of Wisdom, Courage, and Power in Captain N: The Game Master

The Triforce is featured in the "Having a Ball" episode of Captain N: The Game Master. Unlike the Zelda animated series, the Triforce of Courage appears now as well. Each Triforce piece is engraved with the letter corresponding to its attribute: the Triforce of Power is red and has a "P" on it, the Wisdom piece is green with a "W" engraved, and the Triforce of Courage is blue with the letter "C" on it. Since Ganon has been defeated, all three Triforce pieces rest in North Castle,[15] where they are heavily guarded by a security system that shoots beams off whenever someone tries to take it. It is explained in the episode that Zelda and the Triforce have a close connection, and if something happens to the Triforce, both Zelda's energy and the forces that bind Hyrule together will begin to weaken.[16]

In "Having a Ball", Mother Brain commands her two minions, King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard, to steal the Triforce; however, after they fail to take it due to the security system,[17] Mother Brain fires them and decides to go after the Triforce herself.[18] As revenge and with the alarm now turned off by Zelda since she thought it was malfunctioning, King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard go back and try to steal the Triforce yet again while Princess Zelda and Link are at a royal ball hosted by Princess Lana. They manage to take the Triforce of Power and the Triforce of Courage before Mother Brain arrives, but leave the Triforce of Wisdom in the middle of the room. When Mother Brain arrives, King Hippo uses the Triforce of Power's might to knock her out of the castle.[19] Back at the party, Princess Zelda's energy begins to wane and she momentarily faints. Link explains that since there is a magic bond between the princess and the Triforce, she knows that something bad has happened to the sacred relic.[20] Should the Triforce be destroyed, Zelda could die.[21] The next day, Link, Kevin, Lana and Zelda arrive at the chamber of the Triforce and see that all of the pieces except the Triforce of Wisdom have been stolen.[22] Zelda then uses the power of the Triforce of Wisdom to guide the group to the other two missing pieces, and the group eventually catches up with the foes. With Zelda's power weakening even more, Eggplant Wizard threatens to hurt Link and Kevin using the Triforce of Power if they come any closer.[23] However, the heroes manage to retrieve the two Triforce pieces, raising all three pieces up to the sky and thus giving Zelda back her powers.

The Legend of Zelda Game Watch

In The Legend of Zelda Game Watch, Link enters a cave unarmed to retrieve the four Triforce fragments. Each fragment is guarded by Aquamentus. Once he has retrieved all four fragments, Link reassembles the Triforce.

The Legend of Zelda (Valiant Comics)

The three Triforce pieces in The Legend of Zelda comic

The three Triforce pieces also appear in the The Legend of Zelda comics by Valiant Comics published by Valiant Comics. Like in the backstory of the original The Legend of Zelda, Ganon leads his minions to attack Hyrule and thus allow him steal the Triforce of Power.[24] Ganon, already a mighty magician, is turned almost invincible with the might of the Triforce of Power.[25] Because Ganon wielded the Triforce of Power without the Wisdom to use it, he was corrupted by its power and was twisted into the monster he is now.[26] Ganon is so dependent on the power of the Triforce that, if he ever loses it, he will slowly perish.[27]

Ganon was unable to steal the Triforce of Wisdom since Zelda kept it safe from his clutches, for she knew that if the Prince of Darkness obtained the sacred relic, he would rule the kingdom forever.[28] The Triforce of Wisdom is kept by Princess Zelda in North Palace, where its guidance helps her rule the kingdom wisely, and it also allows her to cast powerful magic spells when needed.[29] Being the protector of the Triforce of Wisdom, Zelda must never allow her feelings interfere with her duty, even if it means risking Link's life.[30] By doing so, the Triforce of Wisdom will grant Zelda the knowledge needed to wield the Silver Arrow and thus destroy Ganon with it.[31]

The Triforce of Courage remained hidden until Link accomplished a daring quest, and it now rests within his heart.[32]

In The Power, which heavily focuses on the three Triforce pieces, Link manages to steal the Triforce of Power from Ganon[33] and uses it to severely damage the Prince of Darkness with it.[34] Although Ganon attempts to reclaim the Triforce of Power,[35] the Triforce chooses to remain with Link.[36] The young hero, blindly wanting more power, demands that Zelda turn over the Triforce of Wisdom to him,[37] even going as far as firing a magic spell at the princess.[38] Because Link has misused the power of the Triforce, the Triforce of Courage leaves his heart and goes to Zelda to protect her from Link's malevolence.[38] It is not until the princess shows him how his lust of power has corrupted him that Link realizes he has become to turn into Ganon and what the price of that power is.[39][40] By choosing to throw away the Triforce of Power in order to keep his soul, Link once again proves to be worthy of being the bearer of the Triforce of Courage, which restores his life after nearly dying in Zelda's arms.[41]

In Issue #5, it is explained that once each decade an event known as the Day of the Triforce occurs. In such day, all three Triforce pieces disappear from Hyrule for one day, from dawn to dusk.[42]

Nintendo Adventure Books

The Triforce pieces also make an appearance in the Nintendo Adventure Books: The Crystal Trap and The Shadow Prince. The Triforce of Wisdom is situated in the Triforce Room of the North Castle, kept away from the hands of evil.[43] The Triforce of Courage rests within Link's heart while the Triforce of Power is in the possession of Ganon.[44][45]

In The Crystal Trap, Ganon encases the Triforce of Courage and Wisdom in a Crystal using a spell from the Magic Scroll; however, since the Triforce of Courage is in Link's heart, the young hero became trapped as well.[44] Towards the end of The Shadow Prince, Charles of Moria reveals to be Ganon in disguise and steals the Triforce of Wisdom from the Triforce Room, although Link is successful in retrieving it by slashing Charles's necklace in two, defeating the false knight.

A Link to the Past (Ishinomori)

The Triforce rising from Ganon's body in the A Link to the Past comic

In the A Link to the Past comic by Shotaro Ishinomori, a small, talking tree tells Link the story of the Triforce and the Golden Land.[46] The tree goes on to explain that only the first to touch the Triforce will be endowed with its strength, and that the land where they are now used to be the Golden Land where the Triforce was hidden. He speaks of Ganondorf the Thief, who accidentally stumbled upon the entrance to the Golden Land and had his evil wishes granted by the Triforce.[47] After touching the Triforce, Ganondorf achieved ultimate power and transformed the Golden Land into the Dark World, which caused for many men from Hyrule to be drawn to the land of evil only to be converted into monsters because of their impure thoughts and emotions, including the tree himself.[48] The tree makes a final comment that Link must defeat Ganondorf and reclaim the Triforce to restore the Dark World into the Golden Land.[49]

After Link defeats Ganon, the Triforce rises from his body. The Essence of the Triforce tells Link that the Triforce is waiting for a new master now that Ganon has been defeated, asking that the young hero touch it with a wish in his heart.[50] After Link touches the Triforce, the Dark World vanishes and releases all of the people who had been trapped there, returning the longed-for peace to Hyrule.[51]

Philips CD-i Games

In The Faces of Evil and The Wand of Gamelon, Triforce Maps,[52] referred to simply as Triforces in the game manuals,[53] appear in each stage. They appear at the beginning and end of every stage, with the exception of the games' final stages, and are used to exit and return to the map screen. The Triforce Maps that appear at the end of an area typically open up new stages. A Triforce-shaped cursor is also used on the world map screens to select stages.

In The Wand of Gamelon, the Triforce of Wisdom appears and the Triforce of Courage is mentioned. King Harkinian leaves for Gamelon to aid Duke Onkled against Ganon's forces, and takes the Triforce of Courage to protect him.[54] The Triforce of Wisdom is owned by Impa, which appears as a floating, blue pyramid. The Triforce of Wisdom appears to have the ability to look into events that have occurred and foresee events yet to happen, which Impa uses to assure Zelda that the King will safely return.[55] The Triforce of Wisdom however also tends to be cryptic, and is not very clear in what it reveals. When King Harkinian and Link fail to return after two months, Zelda and Impa leave for Gamelon to find them. Throughout their adventure, Impa uses the Triforce of Wisdom to seek guidance as well as learn that several people, including the King, have been captured by Ganon's minions.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

The Triforce appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee in the Underground Maze level in Adventure Mode. In it, the player must search for the Triforce around a maze in order to finish the level. If the player finds a Master Sword instead of the Triforce, a fight with Link will be triggered.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Main article: Triforce Slash

The Triforce appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl when Link and Toon Link perform their Final Smash upon obtaining a Smash Ball. Known as the Triforce Slash, the Final Smash consists of light shooting out from the Triforce on the back of Link's hand, trapping the opponent as the young hero repeatedly attacks the foe with his sword. The Triforce Slash finishes off with Link making one last powerful slash at the opponent, which causes the victim to fly off.

Super Smash Bros. 4

The Triforce again appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U when Link and Toon Link use their Triforce Slash Final Smashes.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Zelda uses the Triforce of Wisdom as her Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Sonic Lost World

The Triforce appears in Sonic Lost World as the goal in the Zelda-themed DLC The Legend of Zelda Zone.

Hyrule Warriors

The Triforce plays an integral role in the plot of Hyrule Warriors. In battle, "Triforce Pieces", which are shaped like Force Gems, are used to fill the Special Gauge.

Plot Role

The balance of the Triforce was once guarded by sorceress named Cia.[56] However, one of the imprisoned fragments of darkness managed to push the light out of her and take her over, planning to resurrect itself by obtaining the Triforce.[57]

While Link is battling Volga for the first time at Hyrule Field, he attempts to kill both Link and Impa with his fire breath. However, they are shielded by the power of the Triforce of Courage. Later on, at the Valley of Seers, Link, Lana, Impa and Sheik, who is discovered to be wielding the Triforce of Wisdom,[58] encounter Cia, who immediately takes their pieces. With the completed Triforce in her possession, Cia opens portals through time and space to summon three of the sealed fragments of darkness to her.[59]

After the Gates of Souls are closed in each of the three eras, Ganondorf revives himself using the three fragments of his spirit and attempts to take the Triforce from Cia, but fails as she returns two of the pieces to Link and Zelda and using the Triforce of Power to seal Ganondorf once again, keeping it for herself. After claming the Master Sword and defeating Cia at the Valley of Seers, however, Lana takes possession of the Triforce of Power, and she, Zelda and Link use the three pieces to return Hyrule to normal, closing the portals to each of the eras.

As a result of the Master Sword being pulled, the fourth fragment of Ganondorf's spirit is freed, fully reviving him. He attacks Lana and takes the Triforce of Power from her, then attacks Hyrule Castle, defeating Zelda and Link and taking their fragments of the Triforce. With the complete Triforce, Ganondorf takes over the castle, transforming it into his own stronghold. After he is defeated by Link, he uses the Triforce to transform into Ganon. When Ganon is defeated, Link, Lana, and Zelda reclaim the Triforce and use it to seal away Ganon once again.

Resuming the plot in Hyrule Warriors Legends and Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, after the fall of Ganon, Lana was on the search for the disappeared Cia until a Dark force ambushed her and stole her Triforce of Power and caused another rift between Time and space in the Era of the Great Sea. Discovering the dark force was Phantom Ganon who was behind this, Link and his allies of Lana, King Daphnes, Tetra and a weakened Cia, gather together to defeat him and release the Triforce of Power with which Lana use to restore Cia to her full self, and thus returned to Zelda with Link to combine the Triforce to restore the rifts once again. Lastly, Lana and Cia returned to the Valley of Seers where they resume their roles as Guardians and keepers of the Triforce of Power.

Other Appearances

Animal Crossing series

In several Animal Crossing titles, the Triforce appears as a piece of furniture the villager character can acquire.[60] When interacted with, the three parts of the Triforce separate and twirl about before reforming, mimicking the animation and sound effects of the A Link to the Past title screen.

In New Leaf, tree stumps can contain special patterns, including one of the Triforce.
