A Pyrup is an enemy featured in Skyward Sword. They are pinniped-like enemies that reside in fiery areas.

Strategy

Once Link is spotted by them, they will quickly hide in holes in walls and breathe a stream of fire at Link. Link sometimes can avoid them, but other times the stream of fire will block the objective path forward. To defeat Pyrups, the young hero has to use a Bomb Flower, and set it off near the hole where the Pyrup is hidden in. The Bomb can be set off normally, or automatically if it touches the flame the Pyrup is breathing. The resulting explosion kills the Pyrup.

Shelled Pyrup

This variety of Pyrup is more challenging to defeat as it has taken up residence in an abandoned shell or the skeletal remains of another creature. Upon spotting Link, it will release a bellow of flames at the hero, setting him aflame if he makes contact and detonating any nearby Bombs or Bomb Flowers. In order to defeat the Pyrup, Link must throw a bomb into the opening on the top of its shell or roll it underneath, depending on what the Pyrup has lodged itself into. Link can also stab the Pyrup with his sword, if there is an opening in the shell.

Etymology

The name Pyrup derives from "pyro", the Greek word for fire, which is appropriate as they breath fire and live in hot climates, and "pup", a slang term for "puppy", referring to their small, squeaky, juvenile nature.
