The Monkey is an enemy that appears on Toronbo Shores in Link's Awakening.[1]

Characteristics

The Monkey sits in a palm tree to the east of Sale's House O' Bananas and throws damaging coconuts at Link as he passes by. He cannot be reached using Link's Sword, and as such is seemingly invincible. Link can strike the coconuts down with his blade, causing them to drop items such as Rupees. If Link remains on screen for too long, eventually the Monkey will throw a Bomb at him.

It is possible to "defeat" the Monkey by charging into the tree it sits in using the Pegasus Boots. The Monkey will fall and chatter as it leaps away.[2] Though Link cannot harm it once it has fallen from the tree, if Link takes BowWow down to the beach, BowWow will lunge at the Monkey and swallow it in one bite.

Trivia

  • Totakeke, the Monkey's Japanese name, derives from the nickname of Kazumi Totaka, one of the composers of Link's Awakening.
  • Kiki and his fellow monkeys look very different from the Monkey. The reason for this is unclear, especially given that the Monkey looks very similar to the design of Kiki in A Link to the Past. It is possible that the design was originally intended for Kiki, but used instead for an enemy while Kiki was given a more friendly and expressive appearance.
