Merina is a recurring character in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2]

Biography

Breath of the Wild

Merina is a Gerudo Soldier who guards the North Gate of Gerudo Town with Dorrah. She wields a Gerudo Spear.

When Link tries to enter Gerudo Town without a disguise, Dorrah and Merina will stop him from passing through.[3] When Link speaks to Merina, she notices that Link is a "voe," or a man, and warns him that men are not allowed into Gerudo Town.[4] When Link speaks to her again, Merina again scolds him and reiterates that only "vai," or women, are allowed.[5] When Link finishes speaking to her, she exclaims that all men must leave at once.[6]

If Link asks what "voe" means, Merina explains that it is the Gerudo word for "man."[7] Similarly, she reveals that "vai" in the Gerudo word for "woman."[8] After either of these explanations, she will find it ridiculous that Link is trying to enter Gerudo Town without knowing the difference between "voe" and "vai."[9]

When Link speaks to Merina while wearing the Gerudo Outfit on, she comments that they do not see many Hylian women around and welcomes him to Gerudo Town.[10] Merina also explains that only women are allowed inside Town walls, and she invites Link to take his time there.[11] In this scenario, when Link asks about the meaning of "voe" or "vai," Merina will politely teach him.[12][13] She recommends that Link learn the Gerudo language if he plans on entering Gerudo Town.[14] Before finishing speaking, Merina also recommends that Link order a Noble Pursuit at The Noble Canteen, calling it the best drink she has ever had.[15] If Link approaches her again, she vows to keep all voe out of Gerudo Town.[16]

If Link speaks to Merina after calming the Divine Beast Vah Naboris, she is grateful that Riju has brought peace back to the Gerudo Desert.[17] Due to this, she is excited to return to living her life.[18]
