The game involves Link sorting out letters and placing them into the correct delivery box. Each letter has a logo or symbol on it and must be matched with the correct symbol inside the box or it will fall out.
Overview
First time round Link must achieve 25 points to be awarded the Mothers Letter by Baito. When posted Link will receive 20 Rupees.

The Mail Center,[1] also known as Mail Sorting,[2] is a Minigame in The Wind Waker.

Overview

The Mail Center Minigame is found at the Island Postal Service desk inside the Mail Center on Dragon Roost Island. It involves Link sorting as many Letters as possible within 30 seconds, by throwing them into one of the six shelves with the symbol that matches the Letter's seal.[3] This is done by using the control stick to select a shelf and pressing the A button to throw.[4] There is no penalty for throwing a Letter onto the wrong shelf; it will simply fall out onto the floor. Any Letters sorted after the time limit will count as long as they were thrown before time is up.

First, Link can play the Minigame by speaking to Koboli, who is short on help due to the issue with Valoo and is seeking a part-time employee.[5] If Link accepts the job, he will be given a "test" run where he must sort at least ten Letters.[6] If he succeeds, Koboli rewards him with one Rupee for every two Letters sorted,[7] and encourages him to play again to increase his rewards.[8][9]

At a salary of one Rupee per two Letters sorted, Link must sort at least 15 Letters in order to be paid.[10] Sorting 20 or more Letters in a single play will increase his salary to one Rupee per Letter.[11][12]

At a salary of one Rupee per Letter sorted, Link must sort at least 20 Letters in order to be paid.[13] Sorting 25 or more Letters in a single play will increase his salary to three Rupees per Letter.[14][15] However, this is the only occasion that Link can earn such a salary, as Koboli assures him that a new employee is soon to arrive.[16]

The next time Link enters the Mail Center, Koboli will be gone from the desk and replaced with Baito, who is beginning his new part-time job.[17] Baito admires Link's skills and yearns to see him perform a twenty-five letter sort, which gives him another chance to play the Minigame.[18] If Link pulls off the feat, Baito will be so impressed that he feels the need to tell his mother, giving Link the Note to Mom to be placed in a Postbox.[19] Soon thereafter, Baito's mom Kashiko sends a Letter to Link, thanking him with a Piece of Heart for instructing her son.

After this, Link can replay the Minigame again at any time by speaking to Koboli. However, his salary is reverted to just one Rupee per Letter, and he only gets paid if he beats his previous record for Letters sorted.[20][21]
