Hroks are large birds that spend their day roosting on top of the many dead trees scattered across the Lanayru Desert region. If they spot Link stepping into their territory, they will take flight and will attempt to hurt him. They fly at a height that Link's Sword cannot reach, making it useless. Link can try to outrun the flying Hrok, but they can fly an extremely large distance from their nest if they have set him as a target.

Hroks attack Link by dropping large boulders on top of him and will continue to drop boulders until they manage to get in a hit. Link can try to avoid this by making sure he is never directly under the Hrok's shadow. In order to defeat a Hrok, he must use his Beetle to attempt to drop a Bomb on the unsuspecting Hrok while they are roosting on top of their tree, or Link can eventually just shoot them down with one shot from his Bow and Arrows. Hroks will always drop a Red Rupee, worth 20 Rupees, when defeated.

Hrok are Enemies in Skyward Sword.[1][2]

Characteristics

Fi's Commenthide ▲
Fi says:

Target lock: Hrok

This great bird is remarkable for its swollen, red throat. It also ingests minerals contained in rocks.

The small stones it is not able to fully digest are collected in its throat, which it can then amalgamate and regurgitate as fully formed boulders.

Hroks are large birds that reside in the Lanayru Desert, spending their day roosting atop many of the region's dead Trees. They ingest rocks to absorb their minerals for nutrition, but they cannot fully digest the small stones they eat, and regurgitate them as large boulders to attack.[3] They will attack Link in this way once they spot him entering their territory. They fly high above Link, keeping out of reach of his sword. The territory of Hroks covers a large distance, and they will continue to pursue Link even when he is far past their nest.

Link can avoid their attacks by ensuring he is never directly below the shadow of an airborne Hrok. To defeat a Hrok, Link may use his Beetle to drop a Bomb on an unsuspecting Hrok while it is roosting in its Tree. Once he obtains the Bow, he can also shoot them down with one shot. Hroks will always drop a Red Rupee when defeated.

Nomenclature

Hrok is likely derived from the Roc, a mythical bird of enormous size and strength. It may also come from "hork", meaning to vomit or cough up.
