They are based on the rebellious mushroom {{Smw|Goomba}} enemies from the {{Smw|Mario (series)|''Mario'' series}}. As such, their behavior is largely identical: they simply move back and forth, turning only when they hit an obstacle. However, those found outside of side-scrolling areas will move around randomly. If Link drops from a higher platform or uses the [[Roc's Feather]] to land on a Goomba, the enemy will be squashed and defeated. This is a direct reference to {{Smw|Mario}}'s main method of dealing with these foes. If Link does this, he will always be rewarded with a [[Heart]]. This can still be done when facing them outside of side-scrolling areas.

The name Goomba is possibly derived from the Italian slang word ''goombah'', which can mean friend or alternately a member of a gang. Their Japanese name, ''Kuribō'', is a portmanteau ''kuri'', meaning chestnut, and ''bō'', meaning guy.

Goombas are Enemies in Link's Awakening.[1][2][3] They are directly based on the Goomba enemies from the Mario series.

Characteristics

Goombas appear in side-scrolling areas, predominately in dungeons. They simply move back and forth, turning direction only when they hit an obstacle. Goombas can be defeated with any attack. Link can also drop onto them from a platform above or by using Roc's Feather to jump on them. When they are stomped on, they drop a Heart.

Goombas can be found in Tail Cave, Bottle Grotto, in the underground passage leading to Kanalet Castle, Catfish's Maw, Face Shrine, and Turtle Rock. While Goombas appear mostly in side-scrolling areas, they also appear in top-down locations in Eagle's Tower. In these areas they move around randomly. Link can still stomp on them with Roc's Feather.
