Geozards are recurring enemies in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][note 1]
Characteristics
Phantom Hourglass
Geozards typically lurk in areas containing pools of water, which they emerge from if Link steps into their territory. Geozards can also be found attacking ships in the World of the Ocean King. When they spot Link, they will either strike him with their swords, or spew fireballs at the young hero.
Geozards cannot normally be struck from the front while they are facing Link, as they defend from any attack with their large, wooden shields. In order to defeat them, Link must use his Boomerang to trace paths to the Geozards' vulnerable backsides. This temporarily stuns any Geozard hit with the Boomerang for a short period of time, giving Link a chance to bank around and strike them. Once the Hammer has been obtained, it can be used to quickly kill Geozards in two strikes.
Spirit Tracks
Geozards in Spirit Tracks are marginally different from their Phantom Hourglass counterparts. Notably, they now possess metal shields, though they no longer have the ability to breathe fire. Zelda can distract Geozards while possessing a Phantom, allowing Link to attack their backsides. After acquiring the Whip, Link can defeat Geozards by himself, simply by snatching their shields away and then attacking them with his Sword. Without their shields, Phantom Zelda is also able to attack them with ease.
A special variant of Geozards, known as Geozard Chiefs, also appear in the Tower of Spirits. Like the Geozards from Phantom Hourglass, these Geozard Chiefs are capable of breathing fire.
Trivia
- Geozards in the World of the Ocean King possess cephalic fins, resembling a mohawk. However, Geozards in New Hyrule lack these. The reason for this change is unknown, though Geozard Chiefs retain this fin.
Nomenclature
Geozards may derive their name from the ancient Greek prefix, Geo-, based on their amphibious tendencies, and a contraction of the word "lizard."
