Template:Species The Garo [1] are a race of ninja sentries that originate from a country outside of Termina proper in Majora's Mask.[2][3]

History

In life, the Garo were long time enemies of the now-undead inhabitants of the Ikana Canyon, the Ikana. In the afterlife, their rivalry continues, as Garo Ninjas clashed even after becoming extinct. The warriors of the Garo, Garo Ninjas, are swift assailants, and even to this day spy on the deserted Ikana Castle, as if death provided no obstacle in the long-standing tension between the two species. Evidence found throughout Majora's Mask suggests that this secret race was once largely plentiful in the Ikana region, however, their strained relationship with the Ikana may have contributed to their mysterious demise.[4] The Garo can be seen only while wearing the Garo's Mask, a trait of the spirit-like race that backs up their reputation as "shells" of their former selves, a name attributed to the beings by several Clock Town residents.[4] According to Pamela's Father, the scientific name of thess spirits is Garo Robe.[5]

The Garo, as ninjas, incorporate a highly important aspect of combat culture in their behavior: these beings use long, sharp swords in battle. These swords, interestingly, can be easily blocked with the shield, and active blocking will render them weaponless, as their hard sword strikes carry a possiblity of ricocheting off of the shield itself and out of the Garo's grasp. During Link's visit to Ikana Canyon, a single Garo Ninja will appear and attack him, in the event that he is wearing the Garo's Mask. After killing them they will "surrender their wisdom" and subsequently explode, leaving no trace of their existence. [6]

The leader of the Garo Robe is the Garo Master,[7] who Link defeats in the Stone Tower Temple, in the same fashion Link defeats the Ikana King, Igos du Ikana. Upon the defeat of the Garo Master, the Garos will vacate the Ikana Canyon region for good.

Origin

It is unknown as to the true origin of the Garo. Some believe them to be related to, if not the same as, Subrosians due to resemblance.

Trivia

  • The Poe Collector bears a fair resemblance to the Garo Ninjas, although he wears purple and has a single red eye instead of two green ones.
  • Although they appear to be humans with cloaks, Pamela's Father in the Music Box House claims Garos are empty shells, animated by willpower. This is confirmed when the Garo leave Ikana Canyon with the rest of the ghosts. [4]
