First mentioned in A Link to the Past and formally introduced in Ocarina of Time, Ganondorf has made fewer appearances than his bestial counterpart but tends to have a more substantial role in the games he appears in.

Biography

A Link to the Past

This version of Ganondorf follows the events where the Hero of Time loses his battle against Ganon. See the § Ocarina of Time section for more information.

Ganondorf is not seen in A Link to the Past, though he is mentioned by the Maiden in the Swamp Palace and in the manual for A Link to the Past. The Maiden explains that Ganondorf discovered the location of the Golden Land, the resting place of the Triforce, though he allegedly couldn't find a way to return to the Light World once laying his hands on the completed Triforce and being sealed in the Sacred Realm.[38]

In reality, Ganondorf managed to manipulate the Hero of Time to enter his way into the Sacred Realm, but was unable to collect the complete Triforce and unwittingly caused Link and Princess Zelda to come into possession of their respective pieces. After kidnapping Princess Zelda and stealing her Triforce of Wisdom, Ganondorf was confronted in a final battle with the Hero of Time. Ganondorf was able to defeat Link after using the Triforce of Power to transform into Ganon, claiming Link's Triforce of Courage for his own.[39] This left the Six Sages and their leader, Princess Zelda, with no choice but to seal Ganon in the Sacred Realm with the complete Triforce.[39]

Ganondorf is not known to have returned to his Human form after this, though his legacy as a thief who turned into a Demon King with the power of the Triforce remained.[40] Because of this legacy, Ganondorf inspired others to seek out the Sacred Realm to claim the Triforce,[41] only to cause them to transform into Monsters upon entering the Dark World. With an army of Monsters at his disposal, Ganon launched an attack on Hyrule from within the Dark World. This eventually became known as the Imprisoning War because it resulted in the total sealing of the Sacred Realm.[41] However, the cost of this War severely weakened the Kingdom of Hyrule and paved the way for Ganon's return in the Era of Light and Dark.[41]

Ocarina of Time

Ganondorf was born as the only male in a century among the Gerudo, which according to their customs meant that he was fated to be their king.[12] He was raised by his surrogate parents, the evil witches Kotake and Koume.[2] The two witches groomed Ganondorf into becoming an evil and wicked man in the hopes of him becoming their Demon King.[2]

After the Hyrulean Civil War, the Gerudo lands became part of the Kingdom of Hyrule and Ganondorf swore his loyalty to the King of Hyrule. However, Ganondorf secretly plotted to use this opportunity to find a way into the Sacred Realm where the Triforce rests.[42] Upon discovering the nature of the three Spiritual Stones as keys to the Door of Time, Ganondorf threatened the people responsible for keeping them safe. He cursed the Great Deku Tree with a parasite that would ultimately kill him in an attempt to seize the Kokiri's Emerald.[43][44][45] Ganondorf also sealed and infested Dodongo's Cavern with Monsters in an attempt to starve the Gorons for the Goron's Ruby. To claim the Zora's Sapphire, Ganondorf infected Lord Jabu-Jabu with the parasite Barinade and caused Princess Ruto to be swallowed by the guardian spirit. Ganondorf also forces the Gerudo people to do his bidding, earning a reputation for murdering people.[12] This is enough for his second-in-command, Nabooru,[13] to defect and attempt to betray Ganondorf,[12] though she is eventually caught by Kotake and Koume and brainwashed into becoming an Iron Knuckle.[46]

Ganondorf spotting Princess Zelda and Link from Ocarina of Time 3D

Princess Zelda's prophetic dreams warn her of Ganondorf by showing her dark clouds.[47][48] Though she is able to correctly identify Ganondorf as the threat to Hyrule, she is unable to prove it to her father, the King of Hyrule.[48] She enlists Link to gather the three Spiritual Stones in order to claim the Master Sword and stop Ganondorf.[48] While they are spying on Ganondorf through a window in the Castle Gardens, he notices them and begins to observe Link as the child collects the Spiritual Stones, waiting for him to open the Door of Time.[49]

After Link obtains all three Spiritual Stones, Ganondorf attacks Hyrule Castle in an attempt to steal the Ocarina of Time.[50] Impa flees Hyrule Castle with Princess Zelda, though Ganondorf quickly gives chase.[6] He encounters Link at the Castle Gate and demands to know where Princess Zelda fled.[51] At the sight of Link drawing his Kokiri Sword to fight him, Ganondorf knocks Link out of the way and continues his pursuit of the Princess.[52][53]

When Link draws the Master Sword, he is put into a seven-year sleep by the blade until his body is strong enough to wield it. With the Master Sword as final seal to the Sacred Realm removed, Ganondorf enters the Sacred Realm and finds the Triforce within the Temple of Light.[49][7] Because Ganondorf's heart is unbalanced, the Triforce splits into three upon being touched, with each piece going to the person who best embodies its virtue.[50] Ganondorf receives the Triforce of Power while the Triforce of Courage is granted to Link and the Triforce of Wisdom is granted to Princess Zelda.[50] The Sacred Realm also turns dark, reflecting Ganondorf's evil heart.[54] It is eventually known as the Dark World because of this. With the Triforce of Power in hand, Ganondorf destroys Hyrule Castle Town with an army of Monsters, though most of the residents are able to flee to Kakariko Village, a Sheikah village that Impa opened to those affected by the Civil War.[54]

In the seven-year span that Link is resting in the Temple of Light, Ganondorf began to interfere with the stability of Hyrule by introducing Monsters and disrupting the balance of Hyrulean society.[7][55] He floods the Kokiri Forest with Monsters, traps the Gorons within the Fire Temple to be food for Volvagia, and curses Zora's Domain to freeze over. He also transforms Hyrule Castle into Ganon's Castle, turning it into a flying fortress over a pool of Lava.

Ganondorf also deposed Talon from his position at Lon Lon Ranch, installing Ingo in his place and casting him to exile in Kakariko Village. In return for his assistance, Ingo swore fealty to Ganondorf and sought to provide him Horses raised on the Ranch.[9][56] Despite this, Ingo's support for Ganondorf is purely opportunistic as if Link manages to tame Epona and escape from Lon Lon Ranch with her, Ingo will reform his ways and renounce his loyalty for Ganondorf.[57][58]

After Link reawakens, Ganondorf continues to watch his movements in the hopes that Princess Zelda will reveal herself to him. When Link successfully awakens the Six Sages, the Sheikah youth, appears before Link in the Temple of Time and reveals his identity to be Princess Zelda in disguise.[59] After Princess Zelda gives him the Light Arrows, Ganondorf traps her within a magic Crystal and beckons Link to fight him Inside Ganon's Castle as he transports the unconscious Princess Zelda to his position.[60][61][62][2]

The holders of the Triforce gathered Inside Ganon's Castle from Ocarina of Time

Inside Ganon's Castle, Ganondorf plays his organ, which can be increasingly heard as Link ascends the Castle. When Link enters Ganondorf's room at the top of the Castle, the three Triforce pieces begin to resonate.[63] Ganondorf addresses Link, deeming him unworthy to possess the Triforce of Courage and demanding that he return it to him.[64] At this moment, Ganondorf emits a powerful wave of Darkness toward Link, pushing him and Navi back and preventing the latter from being able to get close to him.[65] After this, Ganondorf clears his room and begins to float in the air, beginning their fight.

Link is able to defeat Ganondorf, who falls to the ground. Ganondorf curses Link's name and casts a spell on his Castle before losing consciousness.[8][66] This spell causes Ganon's Castle to begin collapsing, forcing Link and Princess Zelda to descend the Castle and escape.[67] After the duo escape, Ganondorf rises from the rubble of his Castle and bears his crest of the Triforce of Power, which he uses to transform into a powerful beast named Ganon. Ganon traps Link in a circular Flame Wall, forcing him to do battle once more.

There are two outcomes to this final battle which lead to three different realities. In one reality, Link falls in battle against Ganon, who then steals the Triforce of Wisdom and Triforce of Courage to reform the full Triforce.[39] With the Hero of Time unable to battle, Princess Zelda and the remaining Six Sages quickly seal Ganon and the completed Triforce in his possession in the Sacred Realm.[39] This is the first branch of the Zelda Timeline which leads to the events of A Link to the Past.

The other outcome is that Link successfully defeats Ganon, who is promptly sealed away in the Sacred Realm with his Triforce of Power by Princess Zelda and the Six Sages.[68] This further leads to two realities when Princess Zelda sends Link back to his own time and a branch of the Timeline begins.[68][69] Because Link still possess the Crest of Courage when he is sent back in time,[69] the Ganondorf of the Child Era unwittingly inherits the Triforce of Power without entering the Sacred Realm,[70] beginning the course of events that lead to Twilight Princess.

In the persisting Adult Era, the Triforce of Courage is left without an owner and splits into eight Triforce Shards before scattering.[71] From within the Sacred Realm, Ganondorf curses Princess Zelda, the Six Sages, and the absent Link, swearing to return to enact revenge on their descendants.[72] Hundreds of years later during the Era without a Hero, Ganondorf is able to escape from the Sacred Realm and wreak havoc on Hyrule.[73] This forces the Gods to flood the land to seal Ganondorf beneath the waves of a Great Sea,[73] leading to the events of The Wind Waker.

Characteristics

Ganondorf floats above a pillar Inside Ganon's Castle, which is connected to a large, tiled floor. At the start of the battle, Ganondorf will punch the floor, sending a shockwave through the tiled floor segments and causing some of them to break apart and fall. In order to face Ganondorf, Link must distance himself from him so that Ganondorf is unable to hurt him with any shockwave attacks.

Once Link has distanced himself, Ganondorf attacks with a Magical ball of Electricity. This ball can be deflected with a Sword or a Bottle. The Mirror Shield is incapable of deflecting the attack, only diffusing it instead. If Link successfully deflects this ball back toward Ganondorf, the Evil King will deflect it back with his cape, beginning a round of Dead Man's Volley. Link must return the volleys back at Ganondorf, which increase in speed each time they change direction. Once the ball of Electricity has gained enough speed, Ganondorf will be too slow to deflect it and will be stunned by it instead. If Link is hit by this ball, he will be temporarily stunned as well, causing Ganondorf to laugh. While Ganondorf is temporarily stunned, Link must strike him with a Light Arrow, which causes him to fall to the floor, opening up a chance for Link to attack. As this process repeats, Ganondorf's cape sustains damage, eventually forming holes.

Ganondorf is also capable of charging a Magical attack by drawing his hands over his head. This attack launches several balls of Electricity at Link, requiring him to either dodge them or execute a well-timed Spin Attack to deflect them all at once. Additionally, Ganondorf is defenseless against Light Arrows while he is charging this attack.

If any of the balls of Electricity touch a floor tile, it will cause the tile to fall. Beneath these tiles is a large gap connecting a lower floor that is sealed with Barriers. Jars on this floor contain Arrows and Magic Jars, which Link can use to restock his inventory. If Link falls to this floor, he must climb the central pillar that is embedded with ladder-like grooves.

The Wind Waker

This version of Ganondorf follows the events where Ganondorf is defeated by the Hero of Time and sealed in the Sacred Realm by Princess Zelda and the Seven Sages in the Adult Era. See the § Ocarina of Time section for more information.

During the Era without a Hero, Ganondorf escaped his seal.[73] He returned to the Kingdom of Hyrule by crawling up from the earth and attacked the land once more.[73] Without a Hero to defeat him, Hyrule faced certain destruction.[73] Desperate to preserve his Kingdom, Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule called to the Gods for help.[73] In response, the Gods flooded the land, trapping Ganondorf under a Great Sea.[73] However, this only delayed Ganondorf's return as he eventually found his way to the surface of the Great Sea.

Hundreds of years later in the Era of the Great Sea, Ganondorf began searching for the descendants of the Royal Family of Hyrule by sending the Helmaroc King to kidnap young girls with pointed ears and locking them away in his base of operations at the Forsaken Fortress.[74] He did this in search of the missing Triforce of Wisdom, which Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule sent away with his daughter during the Sinking of Hyrule.[75] In order to regain his full power and prevent a new Hero from stopping him, Ganondorf also sent Monsters into the Wind and Earth Temples to kill the Sages of Wind and Earth who could restore the Power to Repel Evil to the Master Sword that held his power back beneath the waves of the Great Sea.[75]

Ganondorf meeting Link atop the Forsaken Fortress from The Wind Waker HD

While the Helmaroc King was attempting to kidnap Tetra near Outset Island, it mistakenly grabbed Link's sister, Aryll, and took her away.[74] This spurred Link into infiltrating the Forsaken Fortress where he was caught by the Helmaroc King and taken before Ganondorf, who commanded the Bird to cast him into the Great Sea where the boy was rescued by the King of Red Lions.[74] Anticipating Link's return, Ganondorf destroyed Greatfish Isle in search of Jabun, the holder of Nayru's Pearl. The Goddess Pearls were keys to the Tower of the Gods, which was designed by the ancient Gods of Hyrule to test heroes and open the way to the sunken Kingdom of Hyrule. Ganondorf also cast a Curse on the Great Sea, casting it into an eternal stormy night.[76] This Curse is broken after Link receives Nayru's Pearl from Jabun at Outset Island.[77]

Link proves himself to the Gods and opens the way to the sunken Kingdom of Hyrule where he draws the Master Sword.[74][78] However, in doing so, Link returns Ganondorf's power and awakens his legion of Monsters.[79][78] When Link returns to the Forsaken Fortress with the Master Sword, Ganondorf reveals that it has lost its power and cannot be used to defeat him.[80][78] Before he can continue, Ganondorf is interrupted by Tetra, who accidentally reveals her identity as Princess Zelda, the rightful owner of the Triforce of Wisdom.[81][78] Before Ganondorf can act, he is attacked by the Sky Spirit Valoo while Link and Tetra escape to the sunken Hyrule Castle.[78]

Ganondorf watching Princess Zelda's dreams from The Wind Waker HD

Tetra, awakened as Princess Zelda, is left there with the belief that Ganondorf would not be able to find her there.[78] However, he quickly discovers her and kidnaps her to his Castle beneath the waves of the Great Sea in order to steal the Triforce of Wisdom.[82] At the top of his Castle, Ganondorf meets Link while inspecting the dreams of the sleeping Princess Zelda. He remarks that all she dreams of are an endless ocean that she hopes to explore.[83] Ganondorf abhors this, believing that the Gods of old destroyed the people of Hyrule, reducing them to a pitiful life scattered across a small number of Islands.[84] He then uses his power to summon Puppet Ganon to fight Link while he retreats to the roof of his Castle.

Atop his Castle, Ganondorf explains to Link that he lived in a cruel Desert where the Winds only brought death, while the Winds of Hyrule were gentle.[85] Coveting this, he sought to take Hyrule for himself by laying claim to the Triforce and forcing the Gods to face him.[86] Recalling the events of his battle against the Hero of Time and Princess Zelda during the Era of the Hero of Time, he concludes that their reunion at the top of his Castle could only be fate.[86] As he has already claimed Princess Zelda's Triforce of Wisdom, he quickly attacks Link and steals his Triforce of Courage.[87] After reassuring Link that he only wishes to take hold of the Triforce of Courage,[88] he reunites the completed Triforce and begins to wish for the rays of the Sun to shine on Hyrule once more so that he may claim it.[89][90] Before he can lay his hand on the Triforce to fulfill his wish, he is interrupted by the Spirit of Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule who touches the Triforce first.[91] Daphnes wishes for the old world to be washed away and for the two children to have a ray of hope for the future shine instead, causing the Great Sea to drain into the remaining parts of the lost Kingdom of Hyrule.[92][93] Ganondorf laughs at the notion of a future for the remnants of the Kingdom of Hyrule and challenges them to battle to crush the hope that Daphnes spoke of and defy the power of the Triforce.[94][95]

Ganondorf turned to stone from The Wind Waker HD

Ganondorf loses against the combined might of Link and Princess Zelda, who drive the Master Sword into his forehead. Ganondorf can only laugh at his defeat, remarking that the Wind is blowing before turning to stone by the Master Sword's power.[96] As he dies beneath the waves of the Great Sea, he is freed from his obsessive desire to possess the Triforce.[97]

Characteristics

The battle with Ganondorf takes place atop Ganon's Castle. In this battle, Ganondorf wields two Swords with which he attacks fluidly. Ganondorf is agile and will leap across the top of the Castle toward Link, making it difficult to distance from him. He can easily block Link's attacks with his Swords, though he can also be Parried.

At the beginning of the fight, Princess Zelda tells Link that she will use a Hero's Bow to help cover him against Ganondorf.[98] She exclusively uses Light Arrows in the fight. If she shoots while Ganondorf is facing her direction, he will simply dodge. However, if she looses a Light Arrow while his back is turned, he will be temporarily stunned by the Light Arrow's power, opening a window for Link to attack. Ganondorf will not allow Princess Zelda many opportunities to do this as he will eventually stop to knock her out with a backhanded slap. Eventually, Princess Zelda will wake up and continue to shoot at Ganondorf, though he now dodges her Arrows regardless of where he is facing. Parrying will also prove fruitless, as Ganondorf will quickly block to protect himself.

Upon realizing that her strategy won't work, Princess Zelda suggests to Link that he should raise his Mirror Shield whenever she readies an Arrow to have it deflect back at Ganondorf.[99] Princess Zelda will shout when she is ready to fire, giving Link a moment to ready his Shield. If Link does not raise his Shield in time while she does this, she will accidentally shoot him, stunning the Hero of Winds for a short time and dealing him a full Heart of damage. If a Light Arrow manages to hit Ganondorf, he will be stunned for a moment before flailing in frustration. Link is able to finish the fight by Parrying Ganondorf at this moment, driving the Master Sword into his forehead.

Four Swords Adventures

This version of Ganondorf follows the events where Ganondorf dies at the hands of Princess Zelda and Link in the Era of Twilight. See the § Twilight Princess section for more information.

Ganondorf's people, the Gerudo, denounced him and left the Gerudo Desert following the Failed Execution of Ganondorf and found a new home in the Desert of Doubt. Hundreds of years after Ganondorf's death in Twilight Princess, he was reborn to the Gerudo once again in the Shadow Era.[100] The Gerudo forbade anyone from entering the sacred Pyramid in the Desert of Doubt,[101][102] but the reborn Ganondorf's heart grew twisted and yearned for power.[103] He disobeyed the laws of Gerudo Village and stole into the Pyramid to claim the Trident, which grants its holder the power of the King of Darkness.[104][105][106][100] Ganondorf also stole the Dark Mirror, which was kept safely in the Temple of Darkness, using it to create dark counterparts of the Links known as Shadow Links to sew chaos across Hyrule.[100] This was done to manipulate Princess Zelda into gathering the six Maidens and Link to check on Vaati's seal at the Elemental Sanctuary.[100] However, when they arrived, Ganondorf used his powers of Darkness to scatter them across Hyrule.[100] Without guidance, Link drew the Four Sword, releasing Vaati from his seal.[107]

Ganondorf resurrected Vaati in Hyrule Castle and commanded him to curse the Royal Jewels to act as portals to the Dark World to summon forth Monsters.[107] Ganondorf also cursed the four Knights of Hyrule holding them to become Dark Stalfos.[107] With the Royal Jewels under protection of Ganondorf's minions, the path to the Tower of Winds was sealed.[107]

When the Links defeat the Knights of Hyrule, rescue the Maidens, and defeat Vaati, Ganondorf transforms into Ganon by using the power he stole from the people of Hyrule. Despite this not being enough to cover Hyrule in Darkness,[108] Ganon beckons the Links to a final confrontation,[109] but is ultimately defeated by the Links and sealed away by the Maidens.[110] Ganondorf's fate after his transformation into the King of Darkness Ganon is unknown.

Twilight Princess

This version of Ganondorf follows the events where Ganondorf is defeated by the Hero of Time and Princess Zelda returns Link to his own time in the Child Era. See the § Ocarina of Time section for more information.
Ganondorf's Failed Execution from Twilight Princess HD

After defeating Ganondorf in the Adult Era, the Hero of Time is sent back to his own time and reverted back to his child body by Princess Zelda.[69] Using the knowledge of the future, the Hero of Time is able to warn the Royal Family of Hyrule about Ganondorf's planned rebellion, and his efforts to get close to the Royal Family are thwarted.[69] Instead of being able to enter the Sacred Realm, Ganondorf is captured and sentenced to execution.[69] However, because Ganondorf was sealed away in the Sacred Realm of the Adult Era, the Triforce was unable to be reunited, causing Link to traveled backward in time with the Crest of Courage. This Crest was a sign that he is the chosen owner of the Triforce of Courage, and thus the split of the Triforce repeated itself even though no-one entered the Sacred Realm to touch the Triforce yet.[69] Ignorant of what happened, Princess Zelda sent Link away in secret so that nobody could pass through the Door of Time and claim the Triforce.[69] A set of Seven Sages was eventually chosen to carry out Ganondorf's execution.[70]

Ganondorf was taken to the Mirror Chamber of the Arbiter's Grounds to face his execution.[70] However, when he was impaled by the Dusk Claymore, the crest of the Triforce of Power began to glow on his hand, imbuing him with enough strength to break his bonds, kill the Sage of Water, and draw the Dusk Claymore from his own body.[70] In their desperation following the Failed Execution, the remaining Sages opened the portal to the Twilight Realm and banished Ganondorf.[70] In this world, Ganondorf took on a Spirit form and quietly fed on the anguish of the inhabitants of the world, the Twili.

Zant meeting Ganondorf from Twilight Princess HD

During the Twilight Era, Ganondorf watched the power-hungry Zant's denial of the throne to the Twilight Realm.[111] When Zant was rejected, Ganondorf appeared to him and offered to share his power in exchange for his loyalty.[70][112] With Ganondorf's sheer power, Zant was able to usurp the throne from Midna, the Twilight Princess, and transform the Twilight Realm's denizens into Monsters.[70] Zant also broke through the barrier between the Twilight Realm and the Light World, allowing Ganondorf to return as Zant carried out his plan to unite both worlds under his control.[70]

Ganondorf atop the throne at Hyrule Castle from Twilight Princess HD

By the time that Link and Midna were able to enter the Palace of Twilight to confront Zant, Ganondorf was able to resurrect himself in the Light World where he sat on the empty throne of Hyrule Castle.[111][113] Inside the throne room, he welcomes Link and Midna to his Castle.[114] He addresses Midna and commends the Twili for having some Magical ability, but dismisses it as nothing compared to the power bestowed upon those chosen by the Triforce.[115] He further asserts that someone with such power would be a rightful ruler to the Light World, to which Midna emphatically denies.[116] Entertained that someone from a world of Shadow could be moved by those from the Light World, he tauntingly challenges Link and Midna to battle by possessing the soulless body of Princess Zelda.[117][118][113]

After Link defeats Ganon's Puppet, Midna uses the full power of the Fused Shadows to purge Princess Zelda's body of Ganondorf's control, forcing Ganondorf to reform elsewhere. Regaining corporeal form, Ganondorf transforms into Ganon and engages in combat with Link once more.

Once Link and Midna have defeated Ganon, Princess Zelda's life force leaves Midna's body and returns to her, allowing them to briefly speak before they are interrupted by Ganondorf's ethereal form.[119] Angered, Midna Warps Link and Princess Zelda to Hyrule Field, leaving herself to confront Ganondorf armed with the complete power of the Fused Shadows. Despite the fearsome power of the Fused Shadows, Ganondorf repels and subdues Midna, taking her personal piece of the Fused Shadow as a trophy. Ganondorf later appears before Link and Princess Zelda on horseback, where he holds Midna's Fused Shadow aloft before crushing it.

Flanked by Phantom Riders, Ganondorf charges toward the duo, beginning the final battle between them.[113] After Link and Princess Zelda successfully beat him in a horseback duel, Ganondorf falls from his Horse. Upon recovering, he laughs and explains that though the Dusk Claymore is merely a regular blade, he intends to use it to create a Dark World.[120] Revealing his intent, he challenges Link to a duel. The duel between Ganondorf and Link ends when Link impales the Dark Lord with the Master Sword in the same spot that he was executed with the Dusk Claymore. Struggling to stand, Ganondorf warns Link that though he has been defeated, their confrontation has not truly ended.[121] Shortly afterwards, the crest of the Triforce of Power disappears from his hand.[122]

Characteristics

Dark Rider: Ganondorf from Twilight Princess HD

As Ganondorf and his newly-conjured Phantom Riders charge toward Link and Princess Zelda, Princess Zelda prays to the Spirits of Light to grant her the power to banish evil.[123] Responding to her call, the Spirits of Light Warp them away from Ganondorf's advance and gift her with Light Arrows. With her newfound power, she asks for Link's assistance in the battle to come.[124] As Link agrees to aid her, the two return to Hyrule Field atop Epona, where Princess Zelda explains that she can stun Ganondorf with the Light Arrows long enough for Link to strike him.[125]

In order to defeat Ganondorf on horseback, Link must come within range of him to allow Princess Zelda to hit him, opening up a window of time for Link to approach and slash him. If Link takes too long, Ganondorf will temporarily summon Phantom Riders, who will charge at Link and Princess Zelda in an attempt to dismount them. Ganondorf may also use this opportunity to personally charge at them while they are distracted by the Phantom Riders.

After Ganondorf has been hit enough times, he will fall from his Horse and challenge Link in a swordsman's duel.

In this duel, Ganondorf aggressively attacks Link with the Dusk Claymore, deftly blocking Link's own attacks. Whenever Ganondorf charges at Link, the Hero of Twilight is given the option to clash with him in an attempt to overpower and temporarily stun him by mashing the A Button. After doing so enough times, Link is able to knock Ganondorf onto his back, opening a window for Link to use the Ending Blow to drive the Master Sword through Ganondorf's wound that he sustained during his Failed Execution, ending the duel.

During the duel, Ganondorf can be distracted with the Fishing Rod and his eyes will follow the assigned Lure. Though Ganondorf can be fought with the Ordon Sword, he can only be defeated with the Master Sword.

Phantom Hourglass

Though he does not appear directly, Ganondorf is shown during Niko's retelling of the events of The Wind Waker in Phantom Hourglass. Niko tells the events of Princess Zelda's kidnapping by Ganondorf and the battle between Ganondorf and Link.[126]

Breath of the Wild

Main article: Calamity Ganon

Ganondorf is referred to indirectly as the man who became Calamity Ganon.[127] After being revived and sealed again countless times, Ganondorf's anger transformed him into Calamity Ganon, and he held a personal grudge against Hyrule.[20] According to legend, he was once a Gerudo, which is a factor that motivates Urbosa to fight against the Calamity.[128][129] In the time since Ganondorf's transformation, there have been no records of another male being born to the Gerudo.[20]

Tears of the Kingdom

Ganondorf's mummified body from Tears of the Kingdom

A separate incarnation of Ganondorf appears around the founding of King Rauru's Hyrule Kingdom in Tears of the Kingdom. He first appears Beneath Hyrule Castle during the prologue, and later in Gloom's Origin in the Central Hyrule Depths as the final Boss.

As Link and Zelda are exploring a Zonai Ruin underground, they discover Ganondorf's mummified body on an altar. His body exudes Gloom as he is held by the chest by a glowing green hand. When the two approach him, the hand releases Ganondorf. He subsequently awakens and attacks them with his Gloom. This corrupts Link's arm and damages the Master Sword. After mocking Link, he proceeds to exude even more Gloom, causing the Upheaval, tearing the room apart and causes Zelda to fall and disappear.

After Ganondorf awakens, he launched Phantom Ganons, taking on the appearance of Zelda, to cause trouble around Hyrule. After Link awakened four sages around Hyrule, he and Purah sees Zelda standing atop the Hyrule Castle. Link, entering the castle, heard Zelda's voice telling that she is waiting. Link traced the appearances of Zelda, which turn into monsters when Link gets close, into the sanctum.

Once in the sanctum, Ganondorf reveals himself as the mastermind behind all of Zelda's appearances. Stating that he had enough, he then launched Phantom Ganons to attack Link. After Link defeats them all, Ganondorf proceeds to attack Link directly with Gloom, only for the four sages to appear and block the attack. Ganondorf subsequently warns of the impending doom of the world and then disappeared.

During the age of King Rauru and the initial years of this incarnation of Hyrule, Ganondorf, then chief of the Gerudo tribe, launched an attack on the Hyrule Castle with a swarm of Molduga, hoping to conquer the world. While Rauru, Queen Sonia and Zelda (who had inadvertently been sent back in time during Ganondorf's revival) used their powers to successfully destroy the swarm, Ganondorf, spotting the Secret Stone on Rauru's right hand, devised a plan. He subsequently pleads allegiance to Rauru. Rauru and Zelda spotted the evil intentions of Ganondorf; Rauru assures Zelda that he will keep a close watch on Ganondorf.

Some time afterwards, Ganondorf, with the assistance of an image of Zelda he created, assassinated Sonia, taking her Secret Stone. With his dark powers amplified by the Secret Stone, Ganondorf, now Demon King Ganondorf, created a vast army of monsters to conquer Hyrule. When Rauru arrived, Ganondorf mocked the king for presuming that he could be controlled before attacking him with Gloom. Covered by Rauru's force shield, Zelda, using the Purah Pad, teleports herself, Rauru, and a dead Sonia to safety.

Almost wiping out the forces of Hyrule and implied to have conquered most of the land, Ganondorf was collectively challenged by Rauru, Zelda, Mineru and four unnamed sages in a last effort duel. They are no match to Ganondorf, however, and were on the brink of defeat. Not accepting defeat and realizing what he had to do, Rauru sacrificed himself to seal Ganondorf, putting his hopes in Link of the future.

Ganondorf lies in the Depths under Hyrule Castle. Upon Link's arrival, Ganondorf used his powers to fully restore his body, and proceeds to duel Link. After being defeated, Ganondorf ate the secret stone to become the Demon Dragon in a desperate attempt to destroy Hyrule, but was defeated again and destroyed for good along with his Secret Stone.

Wall carvings inside the Forgotten Foundation depict a Gerudo warrior on horseback wielding Ganon's signature weapon, a Trident.[130] The entrance to the Ruins is marked with a carving of a Boar, which is both the primary form that Ganon takes as well as the Zonai symbol for the Triforce of Power.[131] Ganondorf's attire bears several instances of the Crest of the Gerudo and he bears a Secret Stone, stolen from Sonia, on his forehead.[132][133] As is the case for the Gerudo prior to Ganondorf's invasion of Hyrule in the Era of the Hero of Time, he possesses round ears. Following this event, the Gerudo developed pointed ears like Hylians,[134] indicating that this incarnation of Ganondorf dates back before this biological change took place.

Other Appearances

A Link to the Past (Ishinomori)

When Link arrives in the Dark World in the A Link to the Past comic by Shotaro Ishinomori, he meets a man that was transfigured into a Tree. This man tells Link about Ganon's history as a thief named Ganondorf who accidentally stumbled upon the entrance to the Golden Land. Ganondorf is depicted as a burly, unkempt man wielding a scimitar.

A Link to the Past (Cagiva)

Ganondorf is shown in the prologue of the A Link to the Past manga by Ataru Cagiva wishing upon the Triforce. He is depicted as a figure veiled entirely by shadow.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

See SmashWiki's article on Ganondorf for more information.

Ganondorf is unlocked after the "Triforce Gathering" event match is completed or by playing 600 matches in Super Smash Bros. Melee. After any of those have been achieved, he will have to be fought in Final Destination. If beaten, he will be unlocked for use in the game. With the exception of his taunt and victory animations, his moves and animations are almost identical to those of Captain Falcon, save for a difference in speed, power, and effect. Ganondorf is slow-moving but overall the most powerful character in the game. However, his lack of speed can be compensated with "L-Canceling" which allows Ganondorf to be played with both power and relative speed, making him a mid-tier. In his game's artwork, Ganondorf wields a sword, although it only appears in the actual game in one of his victory animations. Ganondorf's design, with the Sword included, is based on the SpaceWorld 2000 GameCube Tech Demo.

Render of Ganondorf from Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Ganondorf is unlocked by playing through Classic Mode as Link or Zelda on Hard difficulty, playing 200 matches in Brawl mode, or playing through The Subspace Emissary until he joins the party.[135] His moveset appears largely unchanged. However, many of his animations were changed from the ones he used to share with Captain Falcon. His appearance is based on his Twilight Princess incarnation, like Link and Zelda. He does not use his Sword to battle, but draws it out in one of his taunts. His moveset still features some of the dark purple magic he is seen using in Super Smash Bros. Melee. His movement speed was lowered from Super Smash Bros. Melee, and though most of his attacks can KO at low percentages, he is considered to be a low-tier character and is currently ranked as the worst character in the game.[136]

The Subspace Emissary also marks the first time Ganondorf teams up with Link and Zelda to fight a common enemy. Ganondorf has been resurrected by Master Hand (though with only his warlock powers and no Triforce of Power) and serves as one of the secondary antagonists alongside Bowser commanding the Subspace Army whose goal is to bring the world into Subspace for their leader, Master Hand. However, Ganondorf's true intention is to betray Master Hand and seize his power for himself. He leads a team of several villains such as Ridley, Rayquaza, Porky Minch, Petey Piranha, and Wario, in addition to Bowser, who acts as his second in command, he is also given command over the Subspace army and its commanders: Galleom and Duon. After commanding the R.O.B Squad to set off Subspace Bombs, Ganondorf orders them to betray the Ancient Minister, their former master who in return joins the heroes in his true form as R.O.B. Soon after Ganondorf and Bowser emerge from Subspace in a Massive Subspace Gunship, and engage in battle with the heroes, however, they fail and abandon the exploding ship and head back to Subspace.

Afterwards the two travel to Master Hand; however, Ganondorf betrays Bowser and turns him into a trophy with a Dark Cannon. Master Hand himself is seen to be controlled by Tabuu, the embodiment of Subspace. Ganondorf, surprised at this revelation and enraged that he had been manipulated the entire time, leaps to attack the dark being only to be turned into a trophy himself due to his lack of the Triforce of Power. However in the process he frees Master Hand from his chains and the latter attacks Tabuu only to knock him unconscious, the heroes then arrive to confront Tabuu only for him to turn them all into trophies as well. When Bowser is revived by King Dedede he furiously attacks Ganondorf's trophy in an act of vengeance. Link and Zelda come across the trophy and revive him, forming a temporary alliance as all characters prepare for the final battle against Tabuu. After the fighters are returned to normal all of them, including Ganondorf battle Tabuu, eventually defeating him and returning the world from Subspace.

Ocarina of Time (Himekawa)

Ganondorf's role was overall the same as in the game. However, his first appearance had him eavesdropping on Link and Zelda in the Hyrule Castle Courtyard, as well as, while he apologized for his eavesdropping, it implied that he may have sent the Gerudo after Zelda while the latter was disguised in Hyrule Castle Town. Ganondorf later appeared after Link got the Zora's Sapphire, where he attempted to corner Zelda and Impa at the burning castle while stating that Zelda "will experience eternal sleep with her father" in it, which implied that he had, by that point, murdered her father. He also ended up stealing Link's Fairy Ocarina, under the mistaken impression that it was the Ocarina of Time. Ganondorf did not realize that mistake until seven years had passed, upon which he crushed the ocarina in his hand.

Ganondorf also had Sheik serve him. When Ingo failed to ensure that Epona was supplied to him, Ganondorf initially intended to have him executed for his failure, although he relented after Koume and Kotake instead suggested that they brainwash him. Ganondorf eventually imprisoned Zelda inside a Crystal, and took her to his castle. During the inevitable fight with Link, Ganondorf used a sword with magical powers to overpower him, and sought to finish him off with his ultimate spell. Link was able to use the Spin Attack to deflect the spell back at Ganondorf, which stunned him long enough for Link to cut him down. A wounded Ganondorf then attempted to bring the castle down on Link and Zelda. When that failed, Ganondorf turned into Ganon.

Majora's Mask (Himekawa)

After Link visits Osun's academy, he remembers his last battle with Ganondorf in the future and his return to the past.

A Link to the Past (Himekawa)

Sahasrahla tells Link the creation of Hyrule and the story of the Imprisoning War when he meets him at the Eastern Palace, describing Ganondorf as a member of a group of bandits who accidentally found the entrance to the Sacred Realm.[137] It is said that they fought to the death over the Triforce, with only one man left standing, Ganondorf, also known as the evil bandit Ganon.[138] The flashback depicts Ganondorf with a similar appearance to that in Ocarina of Time.

Hyrule Warriors

Ganondorf from Hyrule Warriors

Ganondorf appears as a playable Warrior in Hyrule Warriors, as well as the final Giant Boss of the main story in Legend Mode and in certain Adventure Mode battles as Ganon.

Ganondorf resembles his Twilight Princess design with traits that resemble Demise. He has longer hair (resembling Demise's flaming mane), wears two golden gauntlets, and has a more vivid color palette on his armor. Ganondorf fights in a very destructive and brutal style that revolves around mixing quick and powerful attacks with dark magic. He wields dual Great Swords in battle as his primary Weapon. Additionally, Ganondorf has access to another Weapon in the form of the Trident, using a fast, hard-hitting style with quick one-handed strikes and charging attacks. Occasionally, when racking up a massive kill count, Ganondorf will allude to his Gerudo heritage while boasting.

Prior to the game's events, Ganondorf was split into four pieces and sealed away long ago within different eras and dimensions; the Water Temple of Ocarina of Time, the Palace of Twilight of Twilight Princess, the Sealed Grounds of Skyward Sword, and one guarded by the Master Sword in the Temple of the Sacred Sword. Although without a body, his influence manages to corrupt Cia, a sorceress tasked with maintaining the balance of the Triforce, into a crazed witch with a strong desire for Link. His influence persuades her into opening the Gate of Souls, with which she uses to summon monsters and wages a war over Hyrule. After stealing the two Triforce pieces from Link and Sheik, thereby reuniting all three Triforce pieces, she uses the gate to retrieve three of Ganondorf's dark fragments. Although his body is still yet to be complete, Ganondorf grows impatient and manifests his body's form in an attempt to steal Cia's stolen Triforce pieces. She subdues him however after returning the two pieces back to Link and Zelda. He appears again in the Temple of Souls, commanding Rogue Forces as he attempts to take the Triforce pieces from their owners. He is defeated by Link before he can capture Zelda.

Ganondorf does not return until Cia is defeated, when the seal in the Master Sword's chamber finally breaks as a result of the sword being removed, thus freeing his last fragment and reviving him again. For three Scenarios, Ganondorf becomes playable as he creates and leads an army to take the Triforce pieces. He summons Zant and Ghirahim to lead under his command, threatening to return them to their imprisonment unless they serve him, and takes over the monster stronghold in Gerudo Desert. He invades the Valley of Seers, where he manages to defeat Lana and take the Triforce of Power that had been bestowed to her by Cia. He then takes Link's and Zelda's Triforce pieces in Hyrule Field, and takes over the castle. After the Hyrulean Forces defeat the stronghold at the desert, they return to Ganon's Tower to defeat Ganondorf. During this time, he was engaging in an unspeakable ritual to unlock his full power, and due to the advance of the Hyrulean forces, has two Argoroks delay their progress. He ultimately managed to awaken his full strength, which according to him was such that neither the Hero nor even the Goddess could surpass him, and proceeded to personally enter the fray afterwards. However, his power was drained after the Hyrulean Forces managed to capture Hyrule Castle while he was out fighting. He is defeated by Link, but uses the Triforce to transform into Ganon. He is however again defeated with the Light Arrows that Zelda bestows to Link, which returns the Triforce pieces to Link, Zelda and Lana. They use the Triforce pieces to imprison Ganon's spirit again.

Characteristics

Ganondorf occasionally drops his Gauntlet as a silver Material when defeated, and rarely his Jewel as a gold Material.

Ganondorf from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Ganondorf is a Fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. His design is now based on his appearance in Ocarina of Time although his hair was still remained like Super Smash Bros. Melee. He now has new Smash attacks, all of which involve him using his Sword from the SpaceWorld 2000 GameCube Tech Demo. In Classic Mode and World of Light, Ganondorf's Dark Beast form Ganon also appears as a boss (standard in World of Light, final boss in Classic Mode). He fights similarly to the Ganon fight in Ocarina of Time with Ganondorf standing amid the ruins before transforming into the Demon King.

Ganondorf has a brief appearance in Kazuya Mishima's debut trailer, where he appears in the beginning yelling and clearly struggling to get free as someone is carrying him over to a cliffside that has a molten lava flow below. He is ultimately unable to break himself free before being thrown down there and presumably killed, with the mysterious figure being revealed to be Kazuya. He also briefly appears in the gameplay where he is taken down by Kazuya.

Ganondorf also appears as a Fighter Spirit that can be obtained by either clearing "Encroaching Darkness", Ganondorf's Classic Mode Route, or by purchasing it from the Shop for G 300. Ganondorf also appears as the Ganondorf (Twilight Princess) Primary Spirit.

At Level 99, the Ganondorf (Twilight Princess) Spirit can be enhanced into the Beast Ganon Primary Spirit.

Cadence of Hyrule

Ganondorf appears as a child who practices the organ in Gerudo Village. Having witnessed Octavo bewitch his caretaker and chief of Gerudo Village, Barriara,[139][140] into a deep sleep, he became inspired to learn the power that music contains.[141] Though Octavo bewitched Barriara to hinder Ganondorf, this ultimately sets him on his path to becoming Ganon as the Fates foretold.

In Octavo's Ode, Octavo manages to defeat Ganondorf before he can gain power.[142] With Link and Zelda bewitched into a deep sleep and without Cadence appearing to stop him, Octavo himself is corrupted and becomes The NecroDancer.

Splatoon 3

Though he does not appear directly, Ganondorf's silhouette is used to represent Power in the Splatoon × The Legend of Zelda Splatfest.

Trivia

Ganondorf's transformation into Ganon is inspired by the character Zhu Bajie from the 16th century Chinese novel, Journey to the West. In the novel, Zhu Bajie is banished from heaven due to his corruption and is reborn as a monstrous pig creature. The inspiration is evidenced by concept designs of Ganon from The Legend of Zelda labeling him as 牛魔王 八戒 (Ushi Maō Hakkai),[143][144] as Hakkai is the Japanese reading of Bajie.

Nomenclature

Ganondorf's last name, Dragmire, first appeared in the English manual for A Link to the Past. He was not given a surname in the Japanese manual, and the retranslated English manual for A Link to the Past & Four Swords also does not include the name Dragmire. However the name appeared again on the official Zelda website in 2017.[32]
