Red Devalants are also able to spit fireballs over a long distance. If [[Link]] gets caught in the sinkhole, it is virtually impossible to escape, so the young hero will have to fight the Devalant up close while it attempts to seize him with its claws. They are not particularly strong, but they can cause a lot of damage if Link gets caught in the sand trap. Like many desert enemies, they are especially weak to the [[Ice Rod]].

Devalants are recurring Enemies in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][name references needed] They both appear and behave similar to that of a larval Antlion.[2]

Characteristics

Devalants are giant, burrowing insects with large snapping pincers that live in desert regions. They create sinkholes in the sand as they burrow underneath, drawing in their prey.

A Link to the Past

In A Link to the Past, two varieties of Devalants can be found, a red one and a blue one. The blue variety will sit and wait for Link to fall into its sinkhole, while the red variety will spit fireballs over a long distance. Upon killing a Devalant, the sinkhole which it lived in will disappear, leaving unmoving sand where it once was.

Four Swords Adventures

A Link Between Worlds

Devalants hide within sand where they wait and form pits to draw in prey in A Link Between Worlds. Devalants can be drawn out of their pits with the Sand Rod, allowing Link to quickly kill them.

Other Appearances

Ancient Stone Tablets

Trivia

  • Devalants are named as Moldorms in the official Shogakukan guide for Four Swords Adventures.
  • The behavior of Molgera when submerged in the sand is very similar to that of a Devalant, but on a much larger scale.

Nomenclature

The Japanese name for Devalant, "Debirando" might be a compound of デビル (Debiru) and ハンド (Hando), meaning "Devilhand".
