The SP, as in SPECIAL PROJECT is the second version of the Game Boy Advance. The 'GBA was redesigned with a frontlite screen, so that players can see the game play more eserly as well as flip-book design protecting the screen from damage and rechargeable battery.

Over the four years since its release, Nintendo have issued many special designs of the new system, such as the NES design and special Pokemon designs. A Golden Zelda GBA-SP was avalible bundeled with Minish Cap. As well as these, the Sp was also rereleased a short time after the Nintendo DS, with a new 'backlite' screen, as many gamers found the white glow of the front lighting a poor excuse for screen light, althouh it was better than nothing at all. The new backlite version is now standard and shares the same screen quality of the original Nintendo DS (now updated inculding a brighter screen system of its own woth the Nintendo DS Lite.
