Magic Rod
The Magical Rod or Magic Rod is a reoccurring weapon in the Zelda series, although it has only appeared in Template:LOZ and Link's Awakening, and is likely to have been replaced by the Fire Rod in subsequent games.
There is also an item called the Book of Magic (バイブル, Bible) which appears in The Legend of Zelda, and is able to increase the power of the Magical Rod. The Book of Magic has only ever appeared once in the series.
Appearances
The Legend of Zelda
In The Legend of Zelda's First Quest, the Magical Rod is found in Level 6, Dragon Labyrinth. In the Second Quest, it is found in Level 8, Lion Labyrinth. The Magical Rod shoots a similar beam to a Wizzrobe's projectile.
After gaining the Book of Magic, the Magical Rod's attack now leaves a fire effect similar to that of a Red Candle when it makes contact with an enemy or wall, causing more damage. It can be found in Level 8, Lion Labyrinth, in the first quest, and Level 4, Snake Labyrinth, in the Second Quest.
Link's Awakening
The Magic Rod is used to expel blasts of magical energy in the form of fireballs, and is the main tool in the final dungeon, Turtle Rock. It is primarily used as a weapon and for lighting unreachable torches. The Magic Rod is vital to defeating the dungeon's boss, Hot Head. If Link leaves Eagle's Tower after obtaining the Mirror Shield with the intention of going to Turtle Rock earlier, but before defeating the boss of Eagle's Tower, the Magic Rod can also act as a very effective weapon against Evil Eagle.
The Magic Rod is one of the most powerful weapons in Link's Awakening, doing twice as much damage as even the Seashell Sword. The Boomerang, Bow, Seashell Sword (with a Piece of Power, The Red Tunic, or a Spin Attack) and Magic Powder can in some cases match it in terms of power, but due to the Magic Rod's range, speed and unlimited use, it can be considered slightly more effective.
There are some enemies the Magic Rod does less damage against, or cannot damage at all, such as Crows, Takkuri and Stalfos.
The Magic Rod in Link's Awakening is also notable as the only thing other than the Magic Powder that can kill a Cucco.[1] It is also the only thing other than the Magic Powder that can kill a Mutt.
Non-canon Appearances
Hyrule Warriors
In Hyrule Warriors, the Magic Rod serves as an alternate fighting style to the Sword and Shield setup. It can shoot wide-ranged projectiles and conjure pillars of flames to juggle enemies. The Rod is also capable of changing shape, such as forming a flamethrower, turning into a larger staff to emit flame-based energy beams, and transforming into a fiery battle axe. While the Level 1 Variant is based more on the Fire Rod, the Level 3 Magical Rod resembles the original Magic Rod greatly.
