Hokkubokku or Hok Bok is an otherwise unnamed rare enemy, that appears solely in the Turtle Rock dungeon of A Link to the Past and the Desert Palace of A Link Between Worlds.

Characteristics and Weaknesses

The Hokkubokku are bizarre, segmented, cactus-like creatures that move by bouncing around rooms in diagonal directions. They are exceptionally bouncy; when they are hit with Link's blade, a segment will break off and bounce around the room violently. These segments can hurt Link, and along with the main body can cause a surprisingly large amount of damage to him, so attacking them with a blade can be risky. However; if Link is able to destroy a bouncing segment before it vanishes it will often leave behind a useful reward like a Fairy or a big Magic Decanter. As the Hokkubokku lose their segments, they will move faster and bouncer further. The final head segment will not rebound around the room, and will take a couple of blows to finish off completely. Using the Fire Rod allows Link to destroy them completely in one go, however.

In A Link Between Worlds, a Hokkubokku appears as one of the mini-bosses in the Desert Palace. It initially appears under the sand, and dives in when Link gets too close, only to reappear somewhere else. The Sand Rod is needed to make it erupt from the ground, from where it is fought in the same manner as in A Link to the Past.

Trivia

  • Hokkubokku are a lot like the Pokeys of Link's Awakening, who also lose segments when hit.
  • Hokkubokku often appear alongside Zols, and may possibly be related.
