In The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Orca is an old man who's home is on Outset Island, a peaceful place where Link also resides. Orca, in his youth with his older brother Sturgeon, set out on a quest to find ten Knight's Crests. Both of then aspired to be great swordsmen, and their quest took many years of hard toil, and honing their skills of the blade. Both fought against beasts and challenged each other to become stronger. Some time at the end of their journey, Orca was injured so seriously that he was unable to become a swordsman. After their journey, they built a house on Outset Island in which Sturgeon lived in the top part of the house, and Orca lived on the bottom. While Orca may no longer use a sword, he may still train and fight with a spear.

It is Orca who first gives Link his sword and teaches him his first moves with it. If Link brings him 10 Knight Crests, he will teach him the Hurricane Spin. Later on in Link's adventure, if you hit him 500 times before he hits you 3 times you receive a Piece of Heart. If you hit him 999 times, he will say that you have surpassed him and from that point he calls you Master.

Amusingly, after you strike him 999 times he will say that he has lost count and that his arm has gone numb. Then, he asks you: "Hasn't the left index finger gone numb"? He's refering to the players L-Targeting finger. Don't be too surprised if it has in fact lost feeling.

In his younger days, Orca had hoped to be
a swordsman, but after he suffered a serious
injury that ended that dream. He soon
returned to Outset and became a fisherman.

On a ledge on one one wall of his house is a
memento from his days of training with a
blade. Orca is a lifelong bachelor.

Link! Is that you? If I recall
correctly, today, you are the same age as
the legendary hero.

Link does so, Sturgeon is annoyed and bangs on the floor.

Ah, my brother upstairs is very high-strung.
His is the way of knowledge. He locks
himself in his room and studies all day.

He is quite wise, but with that big head of
his, he is hardly...accommodating.

On top of it all, he is so very feeble! At
times, I am ashamed to call him my brother.

But enough of that, Link! I sense 
the natural talent that beats in your veins.

But you need more than talent to make it
in the world today. You must also be bold!
And to that end, I shall teach you the art
of swordplay.
