Template change?

Was there any particular reason for this, exactly? It seems very complicated compared to the old style and I didn't see anything wrong with the previous template. What's the reasoning behind the change? Also, I can see some of the bigger templates becoming very messy under this style... User:Fizzle/sig 17:33, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

I'm assuming by bigger templates you mean these. We're not even using a template for that at the moment, it's just raw wikicode. They're going to be messy either way, but a template would at least make them a bit more... manageable.
I couldn't tell you for sure what drove Abdullah to make the change, but I can think of one reason: having the meaning separate as opposed to using Exp makes information more easily accessible to readers. Almost a quarter of our users are on mobile phones, and Exp is not functional on any phone that doesn't allow you to "hover" a cursor over text (e.g. the iPhone).
That said, the "meaning" parameter could be made optional. Then the new version would be as simple as the old one in its most basic form. Really, we should only bother with the "meaning" when the name translates to English as something different than the NoA name. — Hylian King [*] 20:48, 16 December 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It also improves the interface as far as German translations go. The way the template was wired before, any German translation was automatically linked to the German wiki and it was impossible to include a meaning. Now linking is optional (which means we don't have to link to a possibly nonexistent German wiki page just to include a German translation), and we can also include German meaning even when linking to the German wiki. --Shiningpikablu252 05:31, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Fair enough, but the "meaning" part is the bit that is bugging me. It definitely needs to be optional. As well as usually being identical to the final game and thus not required in most cases, sometimes the meaning is variable, so having it out in the open implies that it's canon and not basically what we've loosely translated. User:Fizzle/sig 15:24, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
The meaning field could be made to only appear if there is something entered in the meaning parameters. Also, I deliberately chose "meaning" rather than "translation", as it only gives you the general idea, and isn't as official as a translation. If it really bothers you, we can change it to "Notes" or something, but I don't see it making a big difference. User:Abdullah/sig 16:50, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Alright, so the automatic hiding is done. I also created {{Names Table}} to make it easier to create those large tables. User:Abdullah/sig 18:26, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Having the meaning field only appear when something is entered is much nicer, thanks. I don't think it would get enough use otherwise, thanks for the adjustments! User:Fizzle/sig 21:33, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

There's probably no point, but it could be useful; So I notice some flag images lack the |link=]], and also the |es still exists even though the page only has |esS |esSM |esL |esLM listed. I'm sure I'm stating the obvious, but hey, the template I've used as an example here could be useful... I can't be doing any harm with this, right?

--KokoroSenshi (talk | contribs) 15:32, 26 October 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The flag images lacking the link cancellation are intentional. The group localizations ("es", "fr", "pt", "ch") are going to be removed in tandem with the staff work via translation pages. They only presently exist so they still display for readers, though the example which people are intended to copy intentionally omits them to avoid continued use.
This template is under renovation at the moment. I'll have it fixed soon enough. User:Tony/sig 11:56, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
I see. Thanks for taking the time to reply me though you didn't have to, by the way, I appreciate the information.
So
|ch= Name in Chinese (all regions)
|chM= ....
will be removed from under the Usage heading (but before the Blank Template sub-heading) I suppose then?
I'm curious, will this template be used anywhere other than under Etymology, and will align be set to left as default if so?
I'll just see when it's done, so no need to reply if you want. :)
