Fi (Pronounced /faɪ/, fy) is a character featured in Skyward Sword who is the humanoid representation of the Goddess Sword. It is the spirit within the sword and guides Link during his adventure, serving as the young hero's companion in the game.

History and Abilities

Fi was created by the Goddess Hylia to aid Link in his journey to save Zelda. It is programmed with knowledge of the land, as well as knowledge of enemies, and holds messages directly from Hylia to Link. The Goddess Sword is located in the floating island known as Skyloft. Link eventually finds the sword and uses it to travel between two lands: Skyloft, an island floating above the clouds, and Hyrule.

Fi has a "treasure-seeking ability" called Dowsing, where it can sense important items and inform Link about them. Fi is also the focus on the reason why there are two lands divided by a bank of clouds."

Like Navi and Tatl, Fi has the ability to scan enemies to tell Link about them by pressing down on the Wii Remote. It can also scan people and locations. Fi can telepathically talk to people and robots and sense people's auras. When Link is speaking to Fi, he has the option to gather supplemental data about the area he's in and the enemy he is facing. Fi can also give Link advice, remind him of his objective and provide total play time.

Personality

Similar to Midna, Fi speaks in a synthesized, gibberish language. Its style of speech is also emotionless and robotic. Fi has a tendency to predict percentages when analyzing things and determining probability. Fi refers to Link as its master, having recognized him as the chosen hero. Fi also has a tendency to dance and skate around when relaying a message from the gods. Although Fi seems incapable of emotion, ad the story goes on it begins to develop a subtle friendship with Link, and they seem to have fun together when they preform songs. In the final cutscene, Fi originally requests that Link end their relationship by returning the master sword, but it then calls Link back to give a true goodbye, showing its emotions and feelings for Link for the first time.

Gender

In an interview, Eiji Aonuma stated his belief that Fi is not a female. This would imply that the entity is genderless. However, he does acknowledge that Fi has a feminine figure. Despite this claim, the spirit is referred to as "Mistress Fi" by Scrapper, one of the Ancient Robots.

Trivia

• Fi bears a striking resemblance to the Fairy Queen from The Wind Waker and Four Swords Adventures. The reason for this, if there is any, is unknown.
• Fi is the counterpart of Ghirahim, as they are both the humanoid forms of swords.^{[citation needed]}
• Fi has a body similar to the Master Sword itself. Most of its body is the purple of the handle, the rest is the bluish-white of the blade. The upper part of its cloak, if looked at carefully, makes up the image of the Goddess Sword's crossguard. its legs have the same green straps as the handle.
• Although Fi is the first appearance in the games of a spirit of the Master Sword, a voice from the sword speaks to Link in the A Link to the Past Manga. This voice only speaks when Link first touches the sword, where it states that the hero has arrived to "give me new life in a new time" and commands him to raise the sword high. While the manga is uncanon, it is possible that this influenced the concept of Fi as it predates Skyward Sword by some time.
