Super Mario Wiki is a wiki which covers the Mario games. It was founded in August of 2005 by the owner, Stephen, better known as Steve or Porple, and former bureaucrat and former Halo Wiki owner, Agent Seethroo. The MarioWiki is also a founding member of the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance, or NIWA which also includes Bulbapedia and Zelda Wiki. The wiki has over 10,000 articles, all on games, characters and other Mario related topics. The main page, which in some respects is similar to Zelda Wiki's, includes a Featured Article, Poll, Did You Know section, Latest Proposal, Mario and Nintendo News section, and a its newspaper, as well as links to various wiki categories.

Around November 2006, the Mario Wiki split its coverage into the Donkey Kong Wiki, the Wario Wiki, and the Yoshi Wiki (The last 2 never were created). This was called the Wiki Alliance, hence why some MarioWiki veterans call NIWA the New Wiki Alliance. However, these wikis weren’t useful, so its content was taken back to the MarioWiki around June 2007.

In late 2009, the Super Mario Wiki rejected a Link Exchange affiliation with ZeldaWiki. Some weeks after that, Bulbapedia Webmaster, Archaic, contacted the Mario Wiki telling them his plans about the then-called Independent Nintendo Wikis, which the Mario Wiki, after some problems, finally agreed and so became the third founding member.

The Mario Wiki’s leader for the NIWA project is the well known bureaucrat, Stooben Rooben, and its representative is the SysOp, Tucayo.

Each year, to commemorate the MarioWiki’s anniversary, awards ceremonies are held. They were first hosted by smw:User:Wayoshi and theya re now hosted by Stooben Rooben. On August 12th 2010, the IV MarioWiki Awards, III Userpedia Awards, II Fail Awards, and I ‘Shroom awards will be held.

Wikia’s counterpart

As Bulbapedia and ZeldaWiki, the MarioWiki has also had troubles with the Mario Wikia, and not only with the American one, but also with the Italian Mario Wikia.

The first-mentioned wikia claims to have been attacked in numerous occasions by Mario Wiki users. The Mario Wikia dislikes being called “Mario Wiki Jr.” and claim they are the original one. In April 2010, an impersonator of Stooben Rooben went to the Mario Wikia to threaten them. The confusion was quickly solved as a Mario Wikia bureaucrat contacted Stooben Rooben.

As for the Italian Wikia, in 2008, they started using the Mario Wiki’s logo as well as Main Page design. This was quickly discovered and the mentioned Wikia was requested to change it, which they did without complaining. Around this same time, the Mario Wiki’s logo was changed to the current one.
