Kass is a character in The Legend of Zelda series.(BotW)[4] Kass goes unnamed in Tears of the Kingdom.

Biography

Breath of the Wild

Kass is a minstrel who travels throughout Hyrule Kingdom in search of the "Ancient Songs".[5] He has left his family and his hometown of Rito Village to fulfill the final wish of his teacher, the Court Poet. This journey is documented in Kass's Journal, which can be found in a hut on Washa's Bluff.[6]

When Link first encounters Kass, he will recognize the Sheikah Slate that he is carrying, though he excuses himself for prying.[7] If Link asks if he is a bird, Kass is shocked to hear that he has never seen a Rito before.[8] He then introduces himself to Link and asks if he has heard of the "Ancient Songs."[5][9] He goes on to explain that the "Ancient Songs" are dedicated to the ancient hero who defeated Calamity Ganon 10,000 years ago.[10]

During his journey, Kass can be found at several Stables throughout Hyrule Kingdom. There, he plays a version of Epona's Song that harmonizes with the regular "Stables" theme.[11] At these Stables, he will offer to sing an "Ancient Song" for Link that recounts the previous sealing of Calamity Ganon, which was taught to him by the Court Poet.[12][13] After singing the song for Link, Kass thanks him and welcomes him back to listen to it again.[14]

At Wetland Stable, Kass asks Link if he has seen the nearby Kaya Wan Shrine, as he knows a lot about Ancient Shrines.[15] He reveals that he learned about them from the Court Poet, as he was a member of the Sheikah tribe that often accompanied Princess Zelda as she surveyed ruins.[16] Kass recounts that the Court Poet was always happy when he shared these memories with him.[17]

Upon meeting Link at Foothill Stable, Kass informs him that there are many theories about the origin of the song he plays at Stables.[18] He heard from the Court Poet that it was a song played by the ancient hero to call his horse companion.[11] He encourages Link to come back and listen to it.[19]

At Gerudo Canyon Stable, Kass will be impressed that he made it so far, as even he struggled to make it there by flying.[20] He recounts that the Court Poet, who served the Royal Family of Hyrule, was forced to flee Hyrule Castle when the Great Calamity struck.[21] He imagines that it was a much more dangerous journey than his own.[22]

When spoken to at Rito Stable, Kass will confess that he is homesick.[23] He admits that he had to leave his wife, Amali, and their children behind when he set out on his journey, and he hopes they are doing well.[3] However, he reveals that he is unable to return until he fulfills his promise to the Court Poet.[24] When Link asks about his promise, Kass will begin to explain, but he then decides now is not the time to reveal his promise.[25] He tells Link that after he learns all of the "Ancient Songs," he will share his promise with him in Rito Village.[26]

Kass can also be found in several locations in the wild. Hints for these locations can be found in Kass's Journal, which documents all of the "Ancient Songs" that he knows of. At each of these locations, Link will receive a Shrine Quest or a Side Quest after listening to an "Ancient Song" from Kass. They are as follows:

In his Journal, Kass pledges to continue his journey until he can pass the "Ancient Songs" on to the Champion.[27]

Once Link solves the riddles in each of the "Ancient Songs," Kass returns to Rito Village, where he will perform with his bandoneon next to Akh Va'quot Shrine.[28] The final page in Kass's Journal will also change, revealing that he is pleased to have shared all of the "Ancient Songs" with Link, fulfilling his promise to the Court Poet.[29] During the day, he will be joined by his daughters, Notts, Kotts, Genli, Cree, and Kheel, who sing along as he plays.[30] Through his song, he wishes that the peace they have will last forever.[31]

When visited at night, Kass reveals that he has a song that he would like Link to listen to.[32] He warns Link that he will take some time explaining himself, and he asks if he is fine with this.[33] If Link agrees to listen, Kass thanks him and says that he wishes to talk about his teacher, the Court Poet.[34]

Kass informs Link that his teacher was a Sheikah poet who lived in Hyrule Castle before the Great Calamity struck.[35] During this time, the Court Poet fell in love with Princess Zelda, who he was close in age with.[36] Unfortunately for him, Princess Zelda was in love with her knight, Link, which made the Court Poet jealous.[37] However, Kass claims that something changed after the Great Calamity, as the Court Poet believed so deeply that Link would return to defeat Calamity Ganon that he wrote a song.[38] Kass then plays that song for Link, entitled the "Song of the Hero."[39]

After finishing the song, Kass continues his story, explaining that the Court Poet witnessed Link sacrifice himself for Princess Zelda while fleeing the Calamity.[40] Once Impa explained what happened, the Court Poet decided to begin collecting the "Ancient Songs" in the hope that he could pass them down to Link upon his return.[41] Turning back to Link, Kass asks him if he accepts the "Song of the Hero" from the Court Poet.[42] When Link agrees, Kass thanks him for doing so.[43] He recalls that the Court Poet often spoke of Princess Zelda's beauty, and he expresses a desire to meet her and write a song worthy of her.[44] He once again thanks Link for lending his time to him.[45]

When Link speaks to Kass again, he will express his gratitude that he listened to the "Song of the Hero" for him.[46] He tells Link to come back at night if he wants to hear it again, as it is the only time his daughters leave him alone.[47] During the night, he will offer to sing it again for Link.[48] Afterwards, he tells Link that he will be praying for his safety.[49]

Kass has a special role while The Champions' Ballad DLC Pack is active. During the "EX The Champions' Ballad" Main Quest, Link can encounter Kass after clearing Rohta Chigah Shrine, where he remarks on the dreary appearance of the sky.[50] He is surprised to encounter another traveler in an isolated place like the Great Plateau.[51] He notices that Link does not appear to be well,[52] though he apologizes and explains that he understands the burdens of travel.[53] He reveals that he came to the Great Plateau in search of an "Ancient Song" about a hero.[54] Kass has a feeling that he and Link were destined to meet here.[55] He asks Link if he would like to listen to his song.[56] If Link agrees to listen, Kass tells him to open his ears and heart.[57]

After playing the "Ancient Song," Kass explains that he found it while searching through the Court Poet's old notes.[58] He wonders what kind of sound could alarm a Horse, though he is unable to answer this question.[59] Visiting the locations mentioned in the song helps Kass open his imagination.[60] He reveals that there were other songs among the notes, and he plans on visiting locations associated with them as well.[61]

As Link approaches Monuments throughout "EX The Champions' Ballad", he will Kass nearby. After the first Monument activates, he will notice a flash of light, though he believes it to be his imagination playing tricks on him.[62] He points out the Monument to Link, explaining that he is surpised to find something mentioned in his teacher's Unfinished Song.[63] When Link asks, Kass reveals that the Unfinished Song is mostly complete, though it is missing its key verses.[64] Kass wishes to complete the song, so he has started visiting the locations mentioned in the lyrics.[65]

When Link visits subsequent Monuments, Kass will comment on either the flashing light or the Monument itself.[66][67][68] On several occasions, he will also be surprised to see Link nearby, and he is embarrassed to have been caught speaking to himself.[69][70] Once he has greeted Link, he will direct Link's attention to the Monument, remarking yet again that these structures are mentioned in the Court Poet's Unfinished Song.[71][72][73] He then expresses his joy to be able to sing in such an important location.[74][75][76]

At this point in their conversations, Kass then reveals to Link that there is a verse of the Unfinished Song dedicated to the respective Champion of the Region, which he will proceed to sing.[77][78][79][80] Afterwards, he asks Link if he was moved by his performance.[81][82] By performing in the same spots and learning about the Champions, Kass in turn grows closer to the Unfinished Song.[83][84][85][86] As part of his research, he approaches key figures in the Region for information about their Champion.[87][88][89][90] When Kass finishes speaking, Link will receive "EX Champion Daruk's Song," "EX Champion Mipha's Song," "EX Champion Revali's Song," or "EX Champion Urbosa's Song," depending on their location.

After Link faces the Blight Ganons, he will encounter Kass nearby. Kass reveals that hearing about the Region's respective Champion has inspired him to honor them in songs separate from the Court Poet's Unfinished Song.[91][92][93][94] These songs are "Champion Daruk's Song,"[95] "Champion Mipha's Song,"[96] "Champion Revali's Song,"[97] and "Champion Urbosa's Song."[98] Listening to them will cause Link to recall the "Champion Daruk's Song," "Champion Mipha's Song," "Champion Revali's Song," and "Champion Urbosa's Song" Recovered Memories respectively.

Writing these songs allows Kass to feel closer to the Court Poet.[99][100][101][102] As he continues his journey, he gets closer to completing the Unfinished Song.[103][104][105] He decides that the best setting for this song would be Hyrule Castle.[106]

After Link completes the Final Trial, he will exit the Shrine of Resurrection to find Kass overlooking the Great Plateau.[107] He notices that Link appears to be more accomplished since they last met.[108] Due to this, he claims that he has a song he would like to perform for him.[109] Kass reveals that he has finally completed the Court Poet's Unfinished Song.[110] He states that the Great Plateau is the perfect place to sing the song, which describes the inauguration of the Champions at Hyrule Castle.[111] He then introduces the song, which he has titled "The Champions' Ballad," and begins to play.[112] Hearing the song causes Link to remember "The Champions' Ballad" Recovered Memory.

Once the song has been completed, Kass declares that this ceremony made them all into Champions.[113] He recalls that the Court Poet always advised him to write songs that transport listeners to the moment in time he is singing of, and he finally believes he understands that teaching.[114] Kass then reveals that he found something else when he was looking through the Court Poet's notes, and he believes Link should be the one to keep it.[115] Link's courage reminds him of the Champions, so he believes the item will be safe in his possession.[116] He gifts Link the Picture of the Champions. With one final thought, he wishes for the spirits of the Champions to rest in peace.[117]

Tears of the Kingdom

Kass does not himself appear in Tears of the Kingdom. However, he is referenced by several other characters. Kass is mentioned by his daughter Genli, who tells Molli that her "Papa" had told her about the Stormwind Ark.[118] Additionally, at Washa's Bluff, Penn will state that a famous bard once studied the local Songs there.[119] This references Kass staying there to keep his Journal, and where he gives Link the "Under a Red Moon" Shrine Quest. During the "Secret of the Ring Ruins" Main Quest, Tauro references Kass's "Ancient Song" from "The Serpent's Jaws" Shrine Quest, saying he had heard a Song comparing the Dracozu River to a Dragon.[120]

When Cooking, one of the Songs Link may hum is "Kass's Theme".

Nomenclature

Kass's name comes from his Japanese name カッシーワ (Kasshīwa), which is a pun on かしわ (Kashiwa), a word for a Japanese type of chicken that also can refer to chicken meat in general. This is keeping in line with how the Rito characters in Breath of the Wild are named after cuts of yakitori.
