This item has appeared in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. When Link throws this strange nut on the ground, it explodes, creating a blind flash, stunning most enemies. Though a lot of people think this item is useless, it can actually be quite usefull if you know how and when to use it.
In MM, when you've transformed into Deku Link, you can drop these while flying.
