Phantom Eyes serve as spies for the much more lethal Phantoms who roam Temple of the Ocean King [[ in Phantom Hourglass. Unlike bulky Phantoms, compact and airborne Phantom Eyes can travel comparatively fast, and are able see in all directions at once. They cannot harm Link directly, and can be defeated with a single blow from most weapons.

Upon spotting Link, these creatures will hover above Link's reach, causing racket and drawing the attention of nearby Phantoms. To remove the nuisance, Link's only option is to enter a Safe Zone or to change floors. Once an Eye has lost track of Link, it will return to their original location. The noise they create will often summon more Phantoms or Phantom Eyes to the current floor.

Phantom Eyes can be seen on the dungeon map, much like Phantoms. Since these can see in all directions, it's best for Link to strike from around a corner, behind a wall, or from a Safe Zone with his Boomerang or a Bombchu. While a boomerang strike will not cause an instant defeat, it will stun the foe long enough for Link to finish it off with his Sword or Bow. These are only vulnerable to attack before they find Link, or after they've returned to a dormant state.

In Spirit Tracks, they appear in the Tower of Spirits, first showing up on floor 13.
