Majora's Mask Manga
Link received the Fierce Deity's Mask from Majora and become Fierce Deity Link during his fight against it. In the flashback of Majora, it is explained that Majora's Mask is carved from the armor of a powerful dragon, Majora. Majora guarded an empty land that was neither moving nor dead. This dragon's armor was sought after, as it was believed that the armor could grant wishes and give power. Many came hoping to claim the armor for their own reason, be them good or evil, but Majora killed them all. One day, a mysterious man bearing a strong resemblance to Fierce Deity in both his appearance and clothing visited Majora. This man played music for the dragon, who danced for three days and three nights before dying, supposedly allowing time to move forward. The man then carved a Mask, the Majora's Mask, from the creature's hide, hoping to seal its power. It is hinted in the story that the stranger is in fact a god, the first being that is able to overcome the beast of Majora, and that it does so with music that controls the flow of time.

Fierce Deity Speculation
- (Himekawa)
start
Start
The Fierce Deity's past remains largely unexplained in the game, though it is likely that it is an ancient being like Majora. Like the other Masks, it is implied to contain a powerful spirit. In the Manga, the Fierce Deity corrupts even Link, although Link did possess enough control to remove the Mask at the end of the fight against Majora's Mask.
In the Himekawa, Link receives the Fierce Deity's Mask from and becomes Fierce Deity Link during his fight against it. In a flashback of Majora, it is revealed that while as a dragon, a mysterious man bearing a strong resemblance to the Fierce Deity in both appearance and clothing, had visited Majora. The man played music for the dragon, who danced for three days and three nights before dying. The man then carved the Majora's Mask from the creature's hide, hoping to seal its power. It is hinted in the story that the stranger is in fact a god, the first being that is able to overcome the beast of Majora, and that it does so with music that controls the flow of time.
End

Because Majora gives Link the Mask, calling it the "true bad guy," it can be theorized that Majora orchestrated the events of the game, intending for both itself and the Fierce Deity to be destroyed. However, the context in which it is given, as a child (Majora) designating Link as the oni (Fierce Deity) in a game of tag, it is more likely that Majora was simply toying with Link, or was even delusional.

In HW, Fierce Deity Link appears as part of Young Link's Mask weapon type moveset. During Focus Spirit, Link can temporarily transform into the Fierce Deity to perform powerful attacks before reverting to his normal self. It also includes all other bonuses characteristic to Focus Spirit. This form of Focus Spirit is unusual in that it lasts longer than any other Warrior's. While in Fierce Deity form, Young Link is able to shoot Sword Beams with most of his swings, but generally shares all of his original form's moves. He can also use the HWDE to convert his Special Attack Gauge into more Magic to refill his Magic Meter, thus extending his time in this form. Young Link's Focus Attack features him slicing the Moon in half, damaging enemies around him.

As the Fierce Deity resembles a white-haired adult Link, it can also be thought that the Terminan equivalent of the enduring spirit of Hylia's hero. It has also been theorized as a lost or punished deity of other shadowy races, especially those who ended up being sealed away, such as the Sheikah, Ancient Tribe, the Ikana, the Dark Interlopers, or the Dark Tribe.
An alternate costume for HWDE based on HWDE appears in the - DLC Pack.

Trivia
Trivia
*The Fierce Deity's discs of light fired from the tip of his Sword when a foe is targeted are similar to the Sword Beam, an ability absent from OoT.
*In TFH, the Fierce Deity Armor appears as an Outfit. It doubles the damage of the Sword, allows Link to shoot four Sword Beams, and reduces knockback from enemies.
*Link's Fierce Deity form is popularly referred to as "Oni Link" within Series community.
*In the Japanese version, the moon child's mention of "" and the name "" are overlapped with the letter "鬼/オニ" .
*Fierce Deity Link is taller than most other characters in Majora's Mask; however, because the Mask can only be used in boss rooms, it is difficult to accurately estimate the Fierce Deity's comparative size. One method to comparing sizes is to create placeholder statues via the "Elegy of Emptiness" during boss fights: the statues are perfect imitations of Link (and his transformations) in size and stature. Oddly, although the Fierce Deity is able to enter buildings through comparatively small doors, his tall stature usually prevents him from exiting through them, making it easy to get stuck inside.
*Although there is no official height from Nintendo, due to Fierce Deity's very tall height over most other adult characters and has trouble entering buildings (and it is possible to get actually stuck inside), he appears to be over 7 feet tall, likely the same as Ganondorf.
*Unlike Zora Link, but like Deku and Goron Link, Fierce Deity Link does not blink, most likely because of the action mostly being focused on rather than his facial expressions.

*Fierce Deity Link's sword is twice as strong as the master sword.

Revision as of 11:16, 6 May 2024

Fierce Deity Link is one of the transformations Link turns into in Majora's Mask,[1] achieved by wearing the Fierce Deity's Mask. This transforms him into a mysterious and powerful warrior resembling his adult self (and shares same voice). It is one of four Mask transformations in the game.

Transformation

Link obtains the Fierce Deity's Mask after he trades the twenty non-transforming Masks to the four Moon Children inside the Moon Dungeons. The final Moon Child sitting by the Tree will give Link the Fierce Deity's Mask after noticing all his other Masks are gone.[2] Wearing this Mask enables Link to transform into the Fierce Deity, only during boss battles.[3]

In Majora's Mask 3D, Link can also transform into the Fierce Deity inside the two Fishing Holes. If he attempts to leave when in Fierce Deity form, the Fishing Hole Man will keep the young hero from doing so, wondering how he got in there in the first place.[4]

Abilities

In the Fierce Deity form, Link gains greater strength and range in his attacks as well as certain new abilities. Because the Fierce Deity wields the Fierce Deity Sword, a large, two-handed, helix-edged Sword, he cannot use a Shield, although this disadvantage is compensated for by the Sword's superior power (same as Great Fairy Sword). Link can also use the Sword to release Sword Beams while Targeting an enemy.

Other Appearances

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Fierce Deity Link appears as a Sticker.

Majora's Mask (Himekawa)

In the Majora's Mask manga by Akira Himekawa, Link receives the Fierce Deity's Mask from Majora and becomes Fierce Deity Link during his fight against it.

Hyrule Warriors

In Hyrule Warriors, Fierce Deity Link appears as part of Young Link's Mask weapon type moveset. He can also use the Ocarina of Time to convert his Special Attack Gauge into more Magic to refill his Magic Meter, thus extending his time in this form. Young Link's Focus Attack features him slicing the Moon in half, damaging enemies around him.

An alternate costume for Link based on Fierce Deity Link appears in the Majora's Mask DLC Pack.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U

Though Fierce Deity Link does not appear in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, one of Link's alternate costumes is based on Fierce Deity Link.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Fierce Deity Link appears as a Spirit with the ability, Sword Attack Up, which raises the attack power of a Fighter when they are wielding a sword. One of Link's alternate costumes is based on Fierce Deity Link.

Trivia

 • In Tri Force Heroes, the Fierce Deity Armor appears as an Outfit. It doubles the damage of the Sword, allows Link to shoot four Sword Beams, and reduces knockback from enemies.
 • In the Japanese version, the moon child's mention of "オニごっこ (good guys against bad guys)" and the name "鬼神 (Fierce Deity)" are overlapped with the letter "鬼/オニ (oni)" [5] [6].
 • Although there is no official height from Nintendo, due to Fierce Deity's very tall height over most other adult characters and has trouble entering buildings (and it is possible to get actually stuck inside), he appears to be over 7 feet tall, likely the same as Ganondorf.

Nomenclature

The term "fierce deity," 鬼神, is used to refer to several deities in the Shingon Buddhist pantheon, such as Bishamonten or the Myō-ō, who are fierce and wrathful toward the negative forces that work against humanity's enlightenment, but are benevolent and supportive of humanity. They are seen as deities that work to defeat evil, a quality which the Fierce Deity's Mask gives Link greater ability to achieve.
